Stubborn inflation is taking a toll on the nation’s largest banks. On Friday, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo released earnings that were stuttered with indications that despite recent signs of cooling inflation, the economy continues to be a drag. The bank reported profit of $4.9 billion, down slightly from a year earlier, on revenue of $20.7 billion, up 1 percent from last year. On one hand, the nation’s largest bank pulled in $13.1 billion in profit, but it concurrently disclosed more than half a billion dollars in losses from having to offload sinking mortgage investments, among others. Overall results were bolstered by its investment banking and trading business, and a one time windfall from the sale of shares in Visa.

In September 2021, Ms. Charles opened her salon in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, offering a variety of braid styles, including straight back feed-in braids and braided updos. Her reach grew to include braiding hair for the rapper Cardi B and the reality TV star Tanisha Thomas. Ms. Charles was also part of the hair-braiding team for Beyoncé’s “Black Is King” visual album.

When Willie Mays was perfecting his craft on the sandlots around Birmingham as a teenager in the 1940s, there was hardly anything bigger among the Black community than baseball. Overflowing crowds of Black fans packed Rickwood Field, the local ballpark, when the Birmingham Black Barons played, and on Sundays church would let out early so worshipers could watch baseball. “I don’t think they know anything about Black baseball as such,” said Charles Willis, 92, a high school teammate of Mays who played one season for the Black Barons, referring to Black children in Birmingham today. “Because nowadays, Black kids don’t play baseball.”Major League Baseball went to Rickwood this week as a tribute to the history of the Negro leagues, a celebration that will now encompass a memorial service for Mays, who died on Tuesday at 93. But it is also about looking ahead, wrestling with how to attract young African American athletes to play baseball at a time when African American representation in the sport has diminished.

London CNN —Catherine, Princess of Wales is to take part the Trooping the Colour celebration on Saturday - the King’s official birthday parade - in what will be her first public appearance since revealing her cancer diagnoses. The Princess of Wales - also known as Kate - will watch the rest of the parade with her family nearby, and is expected to join fellow royals on the balcony. The event - one of the highlights of the royal calendar - is a tradition marking the official birthday of the British sovereign for more than 260 years. Britain’s Kings and Queens have doubled up on their festivities since the 18th century, holding both a public celebration – the official birthday – and a more private event on the real date. Three of the British Army’s horses which bolted across in London in April have returned to duty and are expected to take part in this weekend’s birthday parade.

Former President Donald J. Trump told a group of America’s most powerful chief executives on Thursday that he intended to cut the corporate tax rate to 20 percent from 21 percent, according to three people who attended the meeting and who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the ground rules stipulated the meeting was off the record. Mr. Trump made the remarks from a comfortable gray armchair during a conversation with his former economic adviser Larry Kudlow in front of the audience of dozens of leading chief executives, including Tim Cook of Apple, Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase, Doug McMillon of Walmart and Charles W. Scharf of Wells Fargo. They had gathered on Thursday morning in Washington for a meeting of the Business Roundtable, an influential corporate group, and there was said to be palpable relief in the room when Mr. Trump, who has been trying to woo business leaders as potential donors, told the executives much of what they had hoped to hear. Many leaders in corporate America have been nervous that in a second term, Mr. Trump might not be as friendly toward them as he was in his first. Many ended up abandoning him and publicly criticizing him, especially after the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Royal family members sit for portraits a lot. Some of these portraits have drawn near-unanimous praise and stood the test of time, captivating viewers generations later. With some artworks, critics objected royals were too gloomy, too naked, or, in the case of King Charles III’s latest portrait, too red. In the painting unveiled on Tuesday, Charles is enveloped in a cloud of crimson, hot pink and fuchsia. The artist, Jonathan Yeo, told The New York Times in an interview last month that he got to know his subject over four sittings, beginning in 2021, when Charles was still Prince of Wales, and continuing after the coronation last May.
