Tech billionaire Elon Musk on Thursday called the Australian government “fascists” over plans to crack down on misinformation online. Social media companies could face fines up to 5% of their global revenue if they enable the spread of misinformation, under a law proposed Thursday by Australia’s Labor government. Musk, who considers himself a free speech advocate, made the one-word comment in a repost on his social media platform X of an article about the proposed legislation. “Elon Musk’s had more positions on free speech than the Kama Sutra,” Government Services Minister Bill Shorten told the Australian network Channel Nine on Friday. The case is one of several that are ongoing between X and the Australian regulator, eSafety.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk on Thursday called the Australian government "fascists" over plans to crack down on misinformation online. "Elon Musk's had more positions on free speech than the Kama Sutra," Government Services Minister Bill Shorten told the Australian network Channel Nine on Friday. "I mean, is this what he thinks free speech is all about?" At the time, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called Musk an "arrogant billionaire who thinks he is above the law." The Australian regulator later dropped its legal effort after a federal court refused to extend a temporary order to block the graphic content.

The government has reached a "different view" about the already-legislated tax cuts, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said, as the conservative opposition coalition criticised the government for breaking an election pledge of retaining the tax cuts. Chalmers said the tax policy shift would help build trust as it was designed to provide more cost-of-living relief for more people without stoking inflation. Under the new policy, people earning up to A$140,000 ($92,050) will enjoy lower taxes from July 1, Australian media reported. A 37% tax band would be retained for some high earners, with the savings redirected to those on low incomes. That has dented Albanese's ratings since his 2022 election win.

REUTERS/Ibraheem Abu Mustafa Acquire Licensing RightsSYDNEY, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Australia said on Wednesday it had deployed two more military aircraft and a "significant number" of defence personnel to the Middle East to help support its citizens there if the ongoing war between Israel and militant group Hamas escalates. Australia sent a Boeing C-17 aircraft and an air refueler plane that has the capacity to carry passengers, taking the total to three, Defence Minister Richard Marles said. He did not disclose the total number of personnel deployed and where the aircraft would be based due to security reasons but said they would not be based in Israel. "It is a significant number of personnel, though, and they're there to support the aircraft and to support what that aircraft might ultimately have to do," Marles told Channel Nine. Australia on Wednesday also unveiled a new A$20 million ($12.7 million) military package for Ukraine, taking its total aid to A$910 million since Russia invaded in February 2022.

FUKUOKA, Japan, July 26 (Reuters) - Australia's Mollie O'Callaghan finished with a flourish to break the longest-standing world record in women's swimming, claiming the 200 metres freestyle title in a time of one minute, 52.85 seconds at the World Aquatics Championships on Wednesday. Summer McIntosh of Canada was 0.80 seconds behind to take bronze in a world junior record time. Olympic champion Titmus had blazed to the 400m freestyle title on Sunday to erase 16-year-old McIntosh's mark and was well placed to go for another record after topping the semi-final time sheet. Hungary's world record holder Kristof Milak was absent from the men's 200m butterfly that followed, as the Olympic and world champion skipped the meet saying that he was not physically or mentally in a position to compete. The mixed 4x100m medley relay concludes the fourth day of swimming with the Americans tipped to win their third title.

Australia to buy up to 220 Tomahawk missiles from the U.S.

Australia said it's planning to buy up to 220 Tomahawk cruise missiles from the United States after the U.S. State Department approved the sale Friday. The deal comes days after Australia announced it would buy nuclear-powered attack submarines from the U.S. to modernize its fleet amid growing concern about China's influence in the Indo-Pacific. Australian officials said the new nuclear-powered submarines would be able to fire the Tomahawk missiles. Japan last month also announced plans to upgrade its military in an effort to deter China, including buying 400 Tomahawk cruise missiles for deployment as soon as 2026. "This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States," the State Department said in a statement.
'Heartbreaking', Woodbridge bemoans Wimbledon doubles decision
  + stars: | 2023-01-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
MELBOURNE, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Nine-times Wimbledon men's doubles champion Todd Woodbridge said on Thursday it was "heartbreaking" to hear the All England Club had made the decision to cut the event to best-of-three sets rather than five from this year. "Five sets lets the best team win generally in that situation." Woodbridge won six Wimbledon men's doubles titles with compatriot Mark Woodforde in the duo known as the "Woodies" before teaming up with Swede Bjorkman for another three. American Mike Bryan, who with sibling Bob formed the most successful professional doubles team of all time, also bemoaned the decision. The 2022 Wimbledon men's doubles final took more than four hours to complete with Australian duo Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell beating Croatians Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic over five sets.
SYDNEY, Jan 24 (Reuters) - American rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, may not be suitable for an Australian visa because of his history of anti-Semitic remarks, a government minister said on Wednesday, as pressure mounted to deny the award-winning rapper entry. Minister for Education Jason Clare condemned Ye's "awful" anti-Semitic comments involving Hitler and the Holocaust, saying others who had made similar statements had been denied visas. Ye has been dropped by major corporate partners, including Adidas (ADSGn.DE) and banned from Twitter because of anti-Semitic remarks and outbursts on social media against other celebrities. "He's not a person of good character and the minister has the ability to stop somebody coming into our country of bad character." Peter Wertheim, co-chief executive officer of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, met officials on Tuesday to argue for an entry ban.
He went on to blank his opponent to draw huge cheers from the crowd on Margaret Court Arena, which had witnessed an epic comeback from Andy Murray only hours earlier. The former world number one was not happy to end his match at 4.05 am on Friday, describing the late finish as a "joke" and "disrespectful." "We'll always look at it, when we do the (tournament) debrief -- like we do every year. Two all-American matches are also scheduled for Saturday, meaning that a total of six American men can advance -- which would be the highest number to reach the last 16 at the Australian Open since 1995. However, the 35-year-old said this week that the bitter saga had taken its toll. "I was really drawn into a storm in media worldwide that was related to anything to do with COVID and the vaccine," Djokovic told Channel Nine. "All of a sudden I became the villain of the world which is a terrible position to be in as an athlete. I had an amazing tournament, tremendous support - a packed house every match," Djokovic said. SYDNEY, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Flood-weary residents across Australia's southeast rushed to fortify their properties with sandbags on Wednesday as water continued to flow from overloaded dams and swollen rivers. Emergency crews have rescued hundreds of residents in New South Wales by helicopters and boats, with some clinging to trees and rooftops. Forbes, one of the worst-affected rural towns in the state's wheatbelt, is on high alert with the Lachlan River expected to peak near a 70-year high later on Wednesday - the second time in as many weeks. Bernardi's, a local supermarket in Forbes, have been trying to get essential food items but have run out of milk. But there were some signs of relief with flood water receding in some places and rescue teams, including defence force personnel and volunteers from New Zealand, clearing debris.
