Jackson is not the only House representative who has both taken advantage of the popular app and voted for the bill that could ban it. Some of these representatives actively use the app to boost their campaigns, while others use it for office communications. Tens of thousands of Democratic voters cast "uncommitted" ballots against Biden on Super Tuesday. On Super Tuesday, hundreds of thousands of Democratic voters in states across the country declined to vote for President Joe Biden, casting "uncommitted" votes or something similar instead. Across several states, the uncommitted vote share easily dwarfed that of Biden's long shot primary challengers, Marianne Williamson and Rep. Dean Phillips. That's on top of more than 55,000 "no preference" votes in Massachusetts and more than 43,000 "uncommitted" votes in Colorado, along with thousands more in other states. AdvertisementAt the very least, it's a sign that the "uncommitted" campaign has gone national, with Democratic voters in states beyond Michigan willing to cast protest votes against the incumbent president.

Many Americans are dreading a Trump-Biden rematch, but no one feels the anguish quite like a Nikki Haley voter. And I think Donald Trump is horrible.”With Ms. Haley expected to end her 2024 campaign, a crucial new equation is emerging in the electoral math: Where will her voters — and voters like them in key battlegrounds across the country — go in a general election contest between Mr. Trump and President Biden? “The million-dollar question is, will they vote, will they sit it out — or will they vote for Joe Biden?” former Gov. Jim Hodges, a South Carolina Democrat, said of Ms. Haley’s centrist supporters in the state. “A moderate Republican voter in Charleston is not all that different than a moderate Republican voter in the Milwaukee suburbs.”

After President Joe Biden announced his reelection bid last April, the vast majority of Democratic leaders coalesced around his candidacy, which wasn't surprising for an incumbent. Virtually every major Democratic governor or senator is behind the president's reelection bid and long ago dismissed the thought of replacing him on the ballot this year. Trump is aiming to wrest control of the RNC by muscling Whatley through in an orchestrated ouster of the organization's current chair, Ronna McDaniel. Yet for much of his professional life, Whatley's political sensibilities appeared to align far more closely with the party’s mainstream and corporate establishment. "We have two presidents — a former president, the current president— that, frankly, people have lost faith in broadly." The report incensed Democrats, who largely defended Biden after the report was released. "I think he should be putting both his own legacy and the country, most importantly, ahead," Phillips said of the president.

Biden stands as the overwhelming favorite to win the South Carolina primary against comparatively weak opposition: U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota and Marianne Williamson, an author who ran unsuccessfully in 2020. In drawing up the official primary calendar, Democratic officials put South Carolina first. Biden hopes to win South Carolina by a whopping margin, which might infuse his candidacy with more energy and help deflect attention from his low standing in public opinion polls. A total of 55 delegates are at stake Saturday in South Carolina. South Carolina Democrats want a huge turnout to justify the party's decision to bump the state to the front of the line.

South Carolina's primary was the first official nominating contest for Democrats, who – egged on by Biden – moved the state up in the primary schedule. But buoyed by Black voters – especially Black women – Biden earned nearly half of the primary vote in South Carolina in a five-way race, propelling him ultimately to the Democratic nomination. Despite the expected primary victory in South Carolina, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris made a concerted effort to campaign there, visiting the Palmetto State the last two weekends. Harris also visited South Carolina three times since the beginning of the year, speaking at college campuses about student debt relief and abortion rights. Further, 76.5% of the early vote was made up of Black voters, 13% higher than in 2020, he added.

President Biden won the South Carolina primary on Saturday, giving him the kind of emphatic result he no doubt envisioned when he made the state the first contest on the Democrats’ presidential nominating calendar. The election, called by The Associated Press shortly after polls closed, gives Mr. Biden the first set of delegates required to claim the Democratic nomination at the party’s convention in August. Mr. Biden vowed that South Carolina would once again send him to the White House. “The people of South Carolina have spoken again, and I have no doubt that you have set us on the path to winning the presidency again — and making Donald Trump a loser again,” the president said in a statement released by his campaign. Mr. Biden won an overwhelming majority of South Carolina Democrats, more than 96 percent with 80 percent of the vote counted — dominating every county with more than 95 percent of the vote, including in heavily Black areas.

The pregame presidential interview is a relatively young tradition, stretching back only to Barack Obama’s first year in office, and one that Donald Trump skipped once himself. “We hope viewers enjoy watching what they tuned in for — the game,” White House communications director Ben LaBolt told CNN. In past years, the Super Bowl presidential interviews often drove news coverage for days. But the Biden White House has always been skeptical of the value of doing so, in part due to anxiety that a flub could become an unwanted distraction. Biden’s last major interview was on comedian Conan O’Brien’s podcast, recorded at the White House in December.

In 2020, results began to come in soon after, and about 98 percent of votes had been reported by midnight. South Carolina does not have voter registration by party, but those who participate in the Democratic election may not vote in the Republican election on Feb. 24. Voter registration deadlines were in January. The primary is the first 2024 Democratic contest that will award delegates, a change to the calendar that has historically placed Iowa and New Hampshire first. New Hampshire went ahead with its primary on Jan. 23, but no delegates were awarded.

South Carolina holds open primaries, which means any voter registered in the state is permitted to vote in either party's primary. When Rep. Dean Phillips first began making noise about launching a quixotic presidential campaign, the mood among House Democrats might have best been described as anger and disbelief. Since launching his campaign, Phillips has generally been absent from Capitol Hill, effectively cutting down Democrats' ranks by one seat. AdvertisementOn Wednesday evening, Sen. Tina Smith made light of her Minnesota colleague's recent struggles in a video message to the Congressional Dinner, an annual gathering of reporters and lawmakers. At first, Phillips's campaign seemed to constitute a real threat to Biden, even if he was unlikely to actually defeat him. In a statement for this story, a Phillips spokesperson chastised his Democratic colleagues who now speak ill of him.

Hoping to revitalize the momentum that propelled him to the White House, President Biden told a largely Black audience on Saturday night that “you’re the reason Donald Trump is a defeated former president,” in what was effectively his first appearance related to the Democratic primaries. Mr. Biden made clear in his remarks at a South Carolina Democratic Party dinner in Columbia, S.C., that he viewed the forthcoming week as not just a contest but a pivotal moment to energize a frustrated base of Black voters across the nation. And in the run-up to the state’s Feb. 3 Democratic presidential primary, which the party’s national committee selected last year to be the first in the nation, Democrats believe they have entered an opportune time. “He has made it known what he’s going to do if he gets back into office,” Representative James E. Clyburn, Democrat of South Carolina, said of Mr. Trump in an interview. “And to see that blooming as a possibility and see him running as well as he is in the polls, I’m concerned about it.”
