REUTERS/Carlos Garcia RawlinsSHANGHAI (Reuters) - The western Chinese city of Lanzhou said on Saturday it had detected the new coronavirus on the packaging of a batch of shrimp imported from Saudi Arabia, as China ramps up testing of frozen foods. The Lanzhou Municipal Health Commission said in a statement on its website that it had found one positive sample on Friday on the inner packaging of imported frozen shrimp from Saudi Arabia that had passed through customs in the coastal city of Tianjin. The commission said the shrimp had been purchased by Zhanjiang Guolian Aquatic Products Co Ltd, entered the country on Oct. 21 and reached Lanzhou on Nov. 8. The World Health Organization says the risk of catching COVID-19 from frozen food is low, but China has repeatedly sounded alarms after detecting the virus on imported food products, triggering disruptive import bans.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has barred non-Chinese travellers from Britain, France, Belgium, the Philippines and India, imposing some of the most stringent entry curbs of any country as coronavirus cases surge around the world. Belgium has Europe’s highest per capita number of new confirmed cases, while France and India are among the top five countries in the world with the most infections. In March, China had banned entry of foreigners in response to the epidemic. China also plans to impose dual-test requirements on travellers from Australia, Singapore and Japan from Nov. 8. The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China said the antibody test was not widely available in many countries.

Tops 100,000 New Cases in a Day for the First Time In the aftermath of a presidential election in which the pandemic was a top issue, 23 states have reached a record number of coronavirus cases in the past week. For months, Maine had among the lowest levels of transmission anywhere in the country, but new cases there have more than tripled. As states report new cases unevenly from day to day, seven-day averages are a more reliable gauge of trends than an individual day’s figures are. Surges in coronavirus cases in the Midwest could foreshadow a new round of jobless claims if indoor dining is further curtailed. On a seasonally adjusted basis, new state claims totaled 751,000, significantly lower than after the coronavirus pandemic first struck but still extraordinarily high by historical standards.

Mr. Biden proposes big tax increases on corporations and the wealthy to pay for social programs. That hard line is likely to continue no matter whether Mr. Trump or Democratic challenger Joe Biden wins the presidential election. President Trump and Former Vice President Joe Biden have offered different responses to those issues. Environmental policy is one of the biggest contrasts between President Trump and Joe Biden. If he defeats President Trump, Democratic nominee Joe Biden has said he would expand on the mortgage companies’ existing work on affordable housing.
