Marc Piasecki | Getty ImagesTesla CEO and X majority owner Elon Musk wrote and then deleted a Sunday post on X that appeared to question why there weren't more assassination threats made against President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Musk, who has 197.8 million listed followers on X, posted the message shortly after a second apparent assassination attempt against Republican former President Donald Trump. The post was prompted by an X user who asked, "Why they want to kill Donald Trump?" "Well, one lesson I've learned is that just because I say something to a group and they laugh doesn't mean it's going to be all that hilarious as a post on X," Musk posted at 2:58 a.m. E.T. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment on Musk's post.

A global survey by market research firm Kantar found that a net 26% of marketers plan to decrease their spending on X in 2025, the biggest recorded pullback from any major global ad platform. Only 4% of marketers overall think X ads provide “brand safety” — certainty that their ads won’t appear alongside extreme content — compared with 39% for Google ads, Kantar said in a report Thursday. The findings suggest that Musk’s charm offensive at the world’s largest annual advertising festival, Cannes Lions, in June hasn’t succeeded. According to the report, YouTube remains the ad platform marketers most prefer, while, for consumers, Amazon and TikTok share the top spot. Brazil blocked X over the weekend following an order by the Supreme Court because Musk refused to appoint a new legal representative in the country.

LONDON — The U.K. government hit back at Elon Musk after the billionaire made controversial comments about riots — fueled by the far-right and anti-immigration sentiment — taking place across the country. On Sunday, Musk replied to a post about the riots on X, the social media platform he owns, stating: "Civil war is inevitable." Responding to a reporter's question on Monday on whether Starmer agreed with Musk's tweet, the PM's spokesperson said: "There is no justification for comments like that." Elon Musk, the owner of X, retweeted a parody Kamala Harris campaign ad Friday without labeling it as misleading, an apparent violation of his own platform's rules. Portions of video footage in the altered content — such as Harris speaking to crowds, and general videos of her supporters — were used in a recent Harris' campaign video on YouTube. In the original video, Harris narrates, telling viewers, "In this election, we each face a question: what kind of country do we want to live in?" The altered video reposted by Musk does not include Beyonce. This is not the first time altered voice content has appeared during this presidential campaign.

Brands are "shifting from one-time, short-term partnerships to long-term, recurring partnerships," said Olivia McNaughten, senior director of product marketing and partnerships at the influencer firm Grin. Influencer marketing remains a bright spot in the creator industry, whereas companies in other categories have struggled to grow. Influencer marketing, by contrast, is humming along, with billions of dollars expected to pour into the category this year. Influencer marketing may also be outperforming other creator-economy businesses because it taps into an existing market rather than inventing something new. Goldman Sachs analysts forecasted in April 2023 that influencer marketing and creator advertising would help grow the creator economy to a $480 billion industry by 2027.
