"That should be expected, as Apple Intelligence features (the only reason to upgrade)have yet to be rolled out in a significant way." U.S. carriers, including AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, have also seemed unexcited about an Apple Intelligence upgrade cycle. Apple on Wednesday introduced new MacBook Pro laptops with updated processors, in what is likely the company's last major hardware announcement of the year. Apple says the new chips are 1.8 times faster than the M1, which powered Apple's 2021 MacBook Pro. Additionally, all of the new MacBook Pro models come with at least 16GB of RAM. The more memory a computer has, the more it is capable of handling larger and more sophisticated AI models. Doubling the RAM on its laptops represents the most significant change Apple has made to its lineup of computers to better support Apple Intelligence.

John Giannandrea Is Apple's Main AI Leader

In June, Apple announced its entrance into the generative-AI race in the most Cupertino way possible, rebranding the technology "Apple Intelligence." Giannandrea has been shaping Apple's "AI" behind the scenes, though you won't have seen him in any of the company's flashy presentations. Known to many colleagues as "J.G.," Giannandrea, a machine-learning expert, made his name running Google's AI group. When Apple poached Giannandrea in 2018, it was seen as a major win for a company lagging behind rivals in the field. Six years later, as Apple Intelligence finally rolls out, the company is taking a practical approach to AI, but leaning into its key advantage: injecting it into the world's most popular smartphone.

Meta debuted its Orion augmented reality glasses last week without a consumer release date. AR glasses are a substantial step toward a future that ditches the handheld smartphone for face computers. Read previewApple Intelligence didn't come with the latest iPhone 16 drop on September 20, but that won't matter — analysts are confident that it'll still boost iPhone 16 sales throughout the next 12 months as Apple releases the AI-powered features in multiple software updates. "Apple Intelligence is still the big driver," Gil Luria, an Apple analyst for D.A. The analyst compared Apple Intelligence's sales boost potential to the excitement around 5G coverage for iPhone 12 about four years ago. According to the analyst, the difference now is that Apple Intelligence won't come out of the box. Luria, the Apple analyst, told BI that Apple Intelligence won't be a popular feature until people can start using it, comparing it to AI's dominance after ChatGPT was released to the public in 2022.

The leader of one of the largest U.S. carriers said there have been more iPhone 16 sales in the first week of preordering compared to the same period last year for the iPhone 15. The iPhone 16 was announced on Sept. 9 , when the company held this year's fall new product event. So, they're buying up the food chain, and they're buying at a greater rate," Sievert said, dismissing any softer iPhone 16 sales data as "nonsense." This is important because mobile carriers — including Verizon and AT & T — are the single-largest iPhone sales channel for Apple. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that causes a person's breathing to repeatedly stop and start throughout the night. If it goes untreated, sleep apnea can cause fatigue and lead to more serious health issues like heart problems, hypertension and Type 2 diabetes. Apple's sleep apnea detection feature marks the company's latest attempt to position its wearables as a cheaper, simpler alternative to many existing health-care tests and devices. To get evaluated for sleep apnea, for instance, patients typically participate in an at-home test or an in-lab test where they're monitored overnight. The reviews on Wall Street are mixed concerning Monday's iPhone launch event. Apple Intelligence represents a paradigm shift for the company and the iPhone 16 is the ticket into this new generation. That's what will in turn drive demand, both in terms of Apple rolling out Apple Intelligence and developers taking advantage of the new hardware capabilities. The iPhone 16 and the Pro models will be equipped with versions of the new A18 chips. However, even those phones weren't built from the ground up in the way the iPhone 16 is to harness the full power of Apple's AI features.
