CNN —Taylor Swift fans are in their record-breaking era. The “Swift Quake” has been compared to the 2011 “Beast Quake,” when Seattle Seahawks fans erupted after an impressive touchdown by running back Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch. The ensuing celebration was detected on the same local seismometer as the Swift concert, Caplan-Auerbach told CNN. Seismograms compare seismic activity from the 2011 'Beast Quake' with activity recorded during one of Taylor Swift's July concerts in Seattle. While the magnitude difference between “Beast Quake” and “Swift Quake” is only 0.3, Caplan-Auerbach said the Swifties have the Seahawks fans beat.

CNN —The armorer on the set of the movie “Rust” likely was hungover when she loaded a prop gun used by actor Alec Baldwin that fired a live round of ammunition during a rehearsal, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, prosecutors said in a court filing. Witnesses told investigators Hannah Gutierrez Reed “was drinking heavily and smoking marijuana in the evenings during the shooting of Rust,” prosecutors said in the Friday filing. Gutierrez Reed will plead not guilty to two counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the October 2021 shooting, an attorney for her has said. A final decision on charges against Baldwin would be made before August 8, prosecutors said in the Friday filing. Through their respective attorneys, both Gutierrez Reed and Halls accused Baldwin of deflecting blame onto others.

Sheeran claimed Stewart altered elements from “Thinking Out Loud” in his analysis in order to prove his point. Sheeran is accused of copying “Let’s Get It On” by the heirs of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote the 1973 hit with Gaye. Townsend’s daughter Kathryn Townsend Griffin, sister Helen McDonald and the estate of his former wife, Cherrigale Townsend, are the listed plaintiffs on the “Thinking Out Loud” case. Gaye died in 1984 and Townsend died in 2003. When asked on the stand Monday what he would do if the plaintiffs win the case and own the chord progression, Sheeran said, “If that happens, I’m done.”–CNN’s Chloe Melas contributed to this report.
CNN —Amazon founder Jeff Bezos hired an investment firm to research a possible bid for the NFL Washington Commanders team, two people familiar with the situation told the Washington Post. The Washington Post, which Bezos owns, reported that the firm he is working with is New York-based Allen & Company, according to the newspaper’s sources. Hiring the firm doesn’t mean Bezos will buy the team or that he will even bid — but does signal some level of interest. A spokesperson for Bezos declined to comment to both CNN and The Washington Post regarding the report. That same month, in an interview CNN’s Chloe Melas, the billionaire businessman was asked if he was seeking to buy the team.
New York CNN Business —Jeff Bezos may be adding NFL owner to his resume. The Amazon founder, along with Jay-Z, is in talks on a potential joint bid on the Washington Commanders, CNN reported earlier this month. The NFL fined the Commanders $10 million following an internal investigation by attorney Beth Wilkinson last year. Why would Bezos want to own the Commanders? The Commanders have won three Super Bowls (in 1983, 1988 and 1992) and is located in the giant Washington, DC, market.
Though Bezos’ vow was light on specifics, this marks the first time he has announced that he plans to give away most of his money. “I just feel honored to be able to be a part of what they’re doing for this world,” Bezos told CNN. Bezos has committed $10 billion over 10 years, or about 8% of his current net worth, to the Bezos Earth Fund, which Sánchez co-chairs. The economic downturnWhile Bezos and Sánchez plot out their plans for Bezos’ immense wealth, many people of more modest means are bracing for what economists fear may be an extended economic downturn. CNN recently reported that Bezos and Jay-Z are in talks on a potential joint bid on the Washington Commanders.
CNN Business —Amazon is planning to lay off some 10,000 employees in corporate and technology jobs, the New York Times reported on Monday, citing anonymous sources with knowledge of the matter. Amazon did not immediately respond to CNN Business’ request for comment Monday. The Wall Street Journal also reported Monday that Amazon is set to lay off thousands of workers, citing a person familiar with the matter. In its most-recent earnings report, however, Amazon forecast its revenue for the holiday quarter would be lighter than analysts had expected. News of potential layoffs comes at a crucial time for the retail industry, ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Washington CNN Business —Amazon founder Jeff Bezos recently warned consumers and businesses they should consider postponing large purchases in the coming months as the global economy contends with a downturn and faces a possible recession. The business leader offered his starkest advice yet on a faltering economy in an exclusive sit-down interview with CNN’s Chloe Melas on Saturday at Bezos’ Washington, DC, home. Meanwhile, small businesses may want to avoid making large capital expenditures or acquisitions during this uncertain time, Bezos added. If enough consumers follow through with Bezos’ advice, it could mean lower sales for Amazon, the e-commerce giant Bezos founded and that created the vast majority of the billionaire’s wealth. Bezos said the probability of economic conditions worsening makes it prudent to save some cash if it’s an option.

New York CNN Business —Rapper Ye’s falling out with corporate partners has cost him his status as a billionaire, according to Forbes. It estimated the Adidas deal accounted for $1.5 billion of his net worth, but Forbes now estimates it at a mere $400 million. Forbes said that the $400 million remaining of his net worth comes from real estate, cash, his music catalog and a 5% stake in ex-wife Kim Kardashian’s shapewear firm, Skims. Of course, it’s likely that Ye still considers himself a billionaire, given that he has complained for years that Forbes was underestimating his net worth. Forbes reported that in 2020 — when it first listed him as a billionaire — he texted the magazine saying, “It’s not a billion.
