Stocks had a rough week, topped off with a pummeling Friday after the July jobs data came in weaker than expected. Until then, bad economic news was good news for the stock market, because it meant the Federal Reserve would start cutting interest rates sooner. On Thursday, a drop in U.S. manufacturing activity for July and a jump in initial jobless claims dragged down the market. Next week is light on economic data, so expect earnings reports and CEO commentaries to drive the market action. A tanker carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel capsized off the coast of Philippines, leading to one casualty and a vast oil spill, local authorities said Thursday. The vessel had departed Limay and was bound for fellow Philippines' port of Iloilo, according to data from MarineTraffic.com. The Coast Guard said it is now addressing the oil spill and intends to finish siphoning the fuel from the sunken tanker to prevent further spreading within seven days. The Philippine Coast Guard Aviation Command separately alerted that it had deployed air assets on a search-and-rescue mission to the sunken tanker. The Philippines-flagged tanker MT Princess Empress suffered engine troubles in rough seas and sank with its load of 800,000 litres of industrial fuel oil off the central Oriental Mindoro province.

Astronomers still don’t know how cometary globules come to exist in such distinctive structures. Australian farmers rip out millions of vines amid wine glut
  + stars: | 2024-03-09 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
About two-thirds of Australia’s wine grapes are grown in irrigated inland areas such as Griffith, its landscape shaped by vine-growing techniques brought by Italian migrants arriving around the 1950s. That would destroy more than 20 million vines across 12,000 hectares (30,000 acres), Reuters calculations based on Wine Australia data show, or about 8% of Australia’s total area under vine. “If half the vines in Australia were ripped out, it still might not solve the oversupply,” said a wine maker in Western Australia. When China blocked imports during a political dispute in 2020, Australia lost its biggest wine export market by value. And unlike Europe, it offers farmers no financial aid to help them destroy vines and excess wine.

Carlyle’s Big Mac China dish is hard to match

SINGAPORE, Nov 22 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Carlyle (CG.O) may be lagging its peers in the United States. But in China, at least, the buyout firm is finishing a meal that will be hard for others to find. That’s less than the private equity outfit run by Harvey Schwartz was hoping for, but is tasty enough. Given geopolitical tensions and China’s weak economic growth, Carlyle has done well to secure a hassle-free exit. The deal to acquire investment firm Carlyle's (CG.O) 28% holding in the burger chain's China business, which also includes its stores in Hong Kong and Macau, will see McDonald's stake rise to 48%. Since 2017, the number of McDonald's stores in China has doubled to 5,500 and the country has become its second-largest market. McDonald's made an unsolicited offer for Carlyle's stake in the China operations in recent weeks and the deal was struck quickly, said the sources. Reuters reported in August that Trustar Capital was planning to raise a continuation fund that would allow the Chinese private equity firm to sell down its stake in McDonald's China. In contrast to McDonald's, U.S. meat and processed food maker Tyson Foods (TSN.N) plans to sell its China poultry business, sources have said.

Reuters reported in April that Carlyle was discussing various options with financial advisers for its stake in McDonald's China, including setting up a continuation fund for the asset. There was "no better time to simplify our structure" given the benefits of China's long-term potential, McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said. Carlyle, which started raising its sixth Asia-focused fund in mid-2022, has bagged less than $3 billion so far, two of the sources said. BlackRock’s history with Blackstone means a reunion with Stephen Schwarzman’s $110 billion firm is a persistent Wall Street rumor. US officials announced the movement of the carrier strike group toward Israel on Sunday, the day after Hamas carried out deadly terror attacks against the US ally. The amount of firepower each vessel brings adds up, especially considering the capabilities of the air wing aboard USS Gerald R. Ford.
