Laurent de Brunhoff, the French artist who nurtured his father’s creation, a beloved, very Gallic and very civilized elephant named Babar, for nearly seven decades — sending him, among other places, into a haunted castle, to New York City and into outer space — died on Friday at his home in Key West, Fla. Babar was born one night in 1930 in a leafy Paris suburb. Laurent, then 5, and his brother, Mathieu, 4, were having trouble sleeping. Their mother, Cécile de Brunhoff, a pianist and music teacher, began to spin a tale about an orphaned baby elephant who flees the jungle and runs to Paris, which is conveniently located nearby. The boys were enthralled by the story, and in the morning they raced off to tell their father, Jean de Brunhoff, an artist; he embraced the tale and began to sketch the little elephant, whom he named Babar, and flesh out his adventures.

It also wants JPMorgan to pay damages to compensate Epstein's victims, pay punitive damages, separate its business and compliance functions, and hire a compliance consultant. The bank also called the U.S. Virgin Islands' arguments for damages "misdirected" and "not well founded." Friday's filing marks the first time the U.S. Virgin Islands has put a dollar figure on its lawsuit. In the U.S. Virgin Islands case, JPMorgan has sought to shift blame. The case is U.S. Virgin Islands v. JPMorgan Chase Bank NA, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No.

Court filings show how Jeffrey Epstein exerted power in the US Virgin Islands, two of which he owned. A financier worth hundreds of millions of dollars, Epstein owned two islands in the US Virgin Islands (there are roughly 50 islands overall). He had donated generously to Democratic politicians from the US Virgin Islands for years. With the assistance of the US Virgin Islands' first lady, Epstein navigated the territory's political waters unscathed. The court records show that, at least in the US Virgin Islands, he exerted influence with little friction.

That, of course, is the billion-dollar question: What did JPMorgan, America's largest bank, know about Epstein's alleged sex trafficking? Today, banks have entire departments dedicated to tracking client activity and flagging suspicious behavior. Lots of questions'The fuss JPMorgan compliance officers raised about Epstein in 2011 was extensive. Lots of questions," declared a senior JPMorgan compliance officer reviewing Epstein's accounts as part of that 2011 compliance review, according to court papers filed by the US Virgin Islands. Staley sent Epstein internal JPMorgan documents and relied on him for guidance on an array of business and personal dealings, the JPMorgan internal report shows.

Several months later, in October 2006, JPMorgan categorized Epstein as a "high-risk" client, according to a transcript of Dimon's deposition in May. Today, banks have entire departments dedicated to tracking client activity and flagging suspicious behavior. Lots of questions'The fuss JPMorgan compliance officers raised about Epstein in 2011 was extensive. A 'faithless servant'One person who might know much more about the tangled relationship between Epstein and JPMorgan is Jes Staley. In a Tuesday night court filing, the largest U.S. bank also described how Epstein allegedly paid law enforcement entities such as the Virgin Islands Police Department. The U.S. Virgin Islands, where Epstein owned two neighboring islands, has accused JPMorgan of facilitating Epstein's crimes by providing banking services, and enabling him to pay victims. U.S. Virgin Islands police "never received a single complaint" about Epstein's sex trafficking and would have investigated complaints, a person familiar with the territory's law enforcement practices said. JPMorgan's latest disclosures followed Monday's release by the U.S. Virgin Islands of a 22-page document prepared by the bank in late 2019 after Epstein's death. JPMorgan has sued Staley, and wants him liable for damages it might owe in the accusers' and U.S. Virgin Islands' lawsuits.

In a Tuesday night court filing, the largest U.S. bank described how Epstein allegedly paid law enforcement entities such as the Virgin Islands Police Department. JPMorgan also alleged in the filings that Epstein had ties to U.S. Virgin Islands officials, including former first lady Cecile de Jongh, who the bank said were aware of Epstein's crimes. Spokespeople for the U.S. Virgin Islands did not immediately respond to requests for comment after business hours. The territory, where Epstein owned two neighboring islands, has accused JPMorgan of facilitating Epstein's sex crimes by providing banking services, and enabling him to pay his victims. The bank wants Staley to cover its losses in that lawsuit and the U.S. Virgin Islands lawsuit.

A settlement from Deutsche Bank will give up to $5 million each to Jeffrey Epstein's victims. Friday's court filings — if approved by the judge overseeing the case — outline how the funds would be distributed to Epstein's victims. The Deutsche Bank settlement allows Epstein's victims to file claims with a new compensation program. Their law firms can get up to 30% of the Deutsche Bank settlement funds, according to the settlement documents. Representatives for Deutsche Bank and the "Jane Doe" plaintiff didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

The ex-first lady of the Virgin Islands consulted Jeffrey Epstein on a sex offender bill, JPMorgan said. The filings come as JPMorgan is accused by the Virgin Islands of facilitating Epstein's alleged crimes. Days after de Jongh sent the tuition bill to Epstein, she sent him another email about updated language for a sex offender registration bill, per JPMorgan's filings. De Jongh was first lady of the Virgin Islands between 2007 and 2015. Meanwhile, the firm is suing one of its former executives, Jes Staley, alleging that he knew about Epstein's sex trafficking but hid his crimes to keep him as a client.

Those charges were dropped in early 2016 by the Virgin Islands Department of Justice. The filing is part of the bank's defense of a civil lawsuit by the U.S. Virgin Islands alleging JPMorgan facilitated Epstein's sex trafficking of young women. CNBC has reached out to the de Jonghs for comment through an asset management firm in the Virgin Islands where the former governor is a director. Bryan also asked $30,000 go to the Virgin Islands Little League, according to the document. "In addition to visas, some of the young women Epstein brought to the island also neededemployment," the filing noted.

PhiladelphiaIn the fall of 1930, Henri Matisse , age 58, visited his patron Albert Barnes ’s collection, just outside of Philadelphia, for the first time. The great mural “The Dance,” to be installed permanently in the three arches of the main gallery, was commissioned then. Now it provides the impetus for the visually lush, thought-provoking “Matisse in the 1930s,” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the first major exhibition to focus on an often overlooked decade that proved pivotal for the artist. (Born in 1869, Matisse died in 1954, a month short of his 85th birthday.) Jointly organized by the PMA’s Matthew Affron , Cécile Debray of the Musée Picasso, Paris, and Claudine Grammont of the Musée Matisse, Nice, the show assembles about 140 paintings, sculptures and a fabulous group of drawings from public and private European and American collections, plus prints, illustrated books, photographs and films.
