The US women’s team will play an exhibition game against Germany in London on July 23 before their first game of the 2024 Paris Olympics on July 29. The USA women’s 3x3 team features some of America’s younger talent. 3x3 basketball is being contested in just its second Olympic games, with the US winning the inaugural women’s gold medal in Tokyo in 2021. But to the individual cicada, what’s underway is a courtship ritual as intimate and intricate as a tango. The stakes are high; the potential missteps are many. Review the guest listThis year, in a rare “dual emergence,” two groups of periodical cicadas are in attendance: Brood XIII, or the Northern Illinois Brood, comprising as many as three species of 17-year cicada in some locations, and Brood XIX, the Great Southern Brood, comprising up to four species of 13-year cicada. Their songs — like those of Magicicada septendecim and Magicicada neotredecim, below — can sound deceptively similar:

In 1998, Geoff Burdick, an executive at James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment, was hunched in front of a 12-inch monitor at a postproduction house, carefully preparing “Titanic” for release on LaserDisc and VHS. The computer could erase these blemishes using a kind of copy-paste tool, concealing the defects with information from another frame. “But there were a lot of folks who said, ‘This is not right! As the picture quality has improved, restoration tools have evolved with them, making it easier than ever for filmmakers to fine-tune their work using computers. “I think they look the best they’ve ever looked,” Burdick said.

Then a year after that, my 29-year-old partner was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and immediately admitted to the hospital. But the incompatibilities I was noticing had made me start to question if the relationship would last long-term. At the same time, throughout 2021, my partner also started having a lot of strange medical symptoms, especially for a healthy man in his late 20s, all while insisting he was fine. During his treatment, I became his caregiverThe pandemic was still in full swing, and all of our family and friends still lived across the country. Within a matter of days, I went from telling my boyfriend to go to the doctor to becoming a full-time cancer caregiver.

“It’s been an issue in North Dakota, it’s been an issue nationally,” said measure chairman Jared Hendrix, who led a successful 2022 initiative that set term limits for North Dakota’s governor and Legislature. In a 1995 congressional term limits case, the court ruled that states cannot set qualifications for Congress beyond those listed in the U.S. Constitution. Backers of the North Dakota measure filed a federal lawsuit last year, challenging the state's constitutional provisions and laws against out-of-state petition circulators. Term Limits. Term Limits National Field Director Scott Tillman helped Hendrix carry boxes of petitions into the secretary’s office on Friday.

One Social Security disability applicant finally had a hearing scheduled for this month but did not live until the scheduled date, according to David Camp, interim CEO at the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives. While the patient sought help with 825 days left to live, Social Security wasted more than 500 days with its delays. From 2010 to 2022, claims for Social Security disability benefits declined by 37%, while claims for Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, fell by 49%, according to Camp. Eliminating that phase of the process could free disability determination services staff to work on initial disability claims and reduce backlog, she said. Increase funding for Social Security AdministrationCongressional Republicans have proposed a 30% federal budget cut, which would be "completely devastating" to the Social Security Administration, said Kerr-Davis.

Christian Cooper and Amy Tan came to birding from very different paths. Cooper had found refuge in birding as a child, long before the Central Park incident that brought him to national attention. For Tan, birding was a more recent discovery, prompted by a need for an outlet away from political events. The conversation will be hosted by Dodai Stewart, a birding enthusiast and a Metro writer for The New York Times. We’ll also tell you how you can start birding as part of The New York Times summer birding project.

Retail firm Pacvue is expanding beyond advertising. The firm made its name in e-commerce advertising but will now pitch advertisers on retail tech used to manage sales. Retail adtech firm Pacvue is moving beyond retail advertising, an industry that will be worth $45 billion in the US this year, according to Insider Intelligence, Insider's sister companyFour-year-old Pacvue is one of the biggest players in this space, handling $150 billion in gross merchandise value for retailers. At the same time, traditional adtech firms like Pubmatic, Magnite, and The Trade Desk are rolling out retail media products, creating even more retail media tools that brands must navigate. Pacvue is also expanding beyond retail media because it recognizes that there is a ceiling on how much brands will spend on retail advertising.
Amazon's digital ad business is only behind Google's and Meta's — and it's already stolen budget from Meta. Today, that advertising business is no longer simply a way to drive product sales on Amazon. Amazon's ad business, which generated $9.5 billion during the third quarter of 2022, dwarfed Microsoft and Snap and ranked third behind Google and Facebook parent, Meta. There are now nearly 600 advertising partners in Amazon's advertising ecosystem, according to Amazon's directory of companies in the space. As part of its ambitions to grow advertising, Amazon also pitches a data clean room called Amazon Marketing Cloud.
Retailers will face more competition for ad dollars with smaller ad budgets from marketers in 2023. WPP's media buying unit GroupM said that retail media brought in $110 billion this year and is on track to generate $160 billion by 2027. But 2023 will be the year that determines which retail ad businesses will win and which will lose. But some retailers are trying to grow their retail media businesses by separating those two, so retail ads are no longer part of the distribution deal. Retailers are coming for TV budgetsIf retail media budgets increase, other types of ad budgets must get cut.
