The most dismal assessment, though, is that of Canadian journalist Stephen Marche who, in his 2022 book, The Next Civil War: Dispatches form the American Future, contends that a new American civil war is inevitable. Remember that the United States leads the world — by far — in the number of firearms in private hands. There are an estimated 393 million privately held firearms in the United States — more than one gun per person. In fact, there are more civilian-held guns in the United States than the other top 25 countries in the world combined. Indeed, more guns were purchased in the United States in 2020 — nearly 23 million — than any other year on record.

Opinion | A Better Way to Negotiate at the W.T.O.

That’s why so many of the headlines out of the big World Trade Organization conference this week in the United Arab Emirates — “Meeting Seeks Modest Outcomes”; “Slim Hopes for Breakthrough” — convey low expectations. Nevertheless, there is something important to celebrate: For over a year now, the diplomats responsible for reforming the W.T.O. have been trying out a new way of doing business, with remarkable results. Then they came up with creative ways to achieve those goals and wrote a new set of proposed rules together. It may sound a lot like common sense, but in the rigid world of international trade, it amounted to a radical change.

Private credit firms can help companies raise money more quickly and with more flexibility than traditional lenders. Many everyday investors can't buy into big private credit funds, but they can get exposure to the space through the stocks of some of the biggest private lenders. Hamilton still sees upside in buying private credit firms, especially one stock. "Our credit and insurance teams had a remarkable year in 2023, with gross returns of 16.4% in the private credit strategies and 13% in liquid credit. There are also private credit firms that trade outside of the U.S., for investors who are able to buy stocks in foreign markets.

It seems nothing less than a miracle that so many manuscripts from the era endure to our day. These heroes are the subjects of Christopher de Hamel’s lovingly written and lavishly illustrated “The Manuscripts Club: The People Behind a Thousand Years of Medieval Manuscripts.” Crack the spine of any volume by de Hamel and you will step into a world of bookish wonderment. One of the most eminent living scholars and catalogers of medieval European manuscripts, de Hamel is also their greatest champion, having devoted his career to revealing their treasures and mysteries to scholarly and public audiences alike. Alongside his catalogs of private and public collections, he has published studies and guidebooks on a variety of topics. “Scribes and Illuminators” (1992) is still widely taught to students in paleography and codicology (the sciences of old handwriting and old manuscript books, respectively), while “The Book: A History of the Bible” (2001) surveys the history of the sacred Hebrew and Christian texts through the lens of their myriad surviving manuscripts.

How Dogs Help Us Lead Longer, Healthier Lives
  + stars: | 2023-11-10 | by ( Jen Golbeck | Stacey Colino | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
Dogs seem to make us healthier than we would be without them. Social psychologist Bruce Headey conducted a survey of Australian dog-owners and found that they take fewer trips to the doctor and sleep better than non-dog-owners. It’s not that dog-owners are naturally healthier; bringing a dog into your life somehow brings these benefits along. James Serpell, a professor of animal ethics at the University of Pennsylvania, conducted a study in the U.K. that followed pet owners through the 10 months after they adopted their pet. Their scores on measures of general health also improved, and dog-owners increased their physical activity considerably.

Israel is reeling from the deadly Hamas terror attacks last weekend, with many looking for answers. The surprise assault exposed major shortcomings in Israel's feared military and security and intelligence apparatus. A top IDF officer said the military is to blame, but there are several other things that went wrong. And while a top Israeli officer has acknowledged that the military ultimately mishandled security, the country's troubles appear to run much deeper. Israeli security forces patrol streets of Sderot, Israel on October 11, 2023.

Getting hostages out of Gaza could be a difficult task for Israel, hostage experts said. It's unclear where Hamas is holding them and regions may be covered in traps, the experts said. Israel's ongoing counterattack on Gaza could made it even more difficult to reach the hostages. As Israel pummels neighborhood after neighborhood in Gaza, Elbag and his wife have been glued to the television, looking for any sign of her. He said the captives have likely already been dispersed throughout Gaza, and their hiding places and perhaps even the hostages themselves are likely to be laden with traps.

Hamas was surprised by the success of its attack in Israel, a Hamas leader told the Associated Press. Hamas' attacks show Israeli intelligence failed to predict an offensive from Gaza, experts said. Opinion | Should Trump’s Jan. 6 Trial Be Televised?

To the Editor:Re “Let the World See the Jan. 6 Trial,” by Steven Brill (Opinion guest essay, Aug. 7):If you put a live camera in the courtroom with Donald Trump, you will give him exactly what he wants. The trial will very quickly spin out of control, and that is exactly what Mr. Trump wants. You will never convince Mr. Trump’s die-hards that he got a fair trial. Conduct a normal untelevised trial and prepare for violence if Mr. Trump is convicted. The pending trial of Donald Trump on charges related to the 2020 election will be, far and away, the most important court proceeding of our lifetimes.

LONDON, July 11 (Reuters) - Canada's biggest pension fund, CPP Investments, has made its first bet on green hydrogen playing a growing role in cutting emissions, with a 130 million euro ($143 million) investment and the purchase of a majority stake in a three-year-old Dutch firm. "Europe is generally seen as the leading industrial market or consumer for these green molecules. Power2X's current projects include a green hydrogen and ammonia development in Portugal and a solar power and green hydrogen project in Spain. Expanding green hydrogen production will require more renewable power generation, and some questions remain over its potential use cases versus other low-emission technologies. Last month Canada's Investment Management Corporation of Ontario announced a $400 million investment in Sweden's battery producer Northvolt.

But Titan, the lost submersible from the company OceanGate, is a technological maverick based on novel concepts that differ from standard designs. “I’ve had three people ask me about making a dive on it,” he said in reference to the lost submersible. Private vessels — those used on superyachts, exploratory craft, tourists jaunts — are not formally regulated by any governmental or intergovernmental agency. Nor do they meet the rigorous standards that are applied to deep-sea craft used by the United States Navy and other government agencies. “We are proud that every submersible delivered remains in active service and certified to its original design depth,” it says on the company’s website.

Bruce Haigh, an Australian diplomat who brushed aside the protocols of his profession to offer covert support to anti-apartheid figures in South Africa, including the banned newspaper editor depicted in the movie “Cry Freedom,” died on April 7 in Australia. His sister, Christina Henderson, told Australian news outlets that her brother had been medevacked from Laos when a cancerous condition worsened. He died in a hospital in Wollongong, south of Sydney, she said. Over the years Mr. Haigh worked variously as a ranch hand (known on Australian sheep and cattle stations as a jackeroo), an oil rig worker; an Australian Army conscript in Vietnam, a diplomat, a champion of refugees, and a columnist and broadcaster decrying what he considered excessive American influence on Australia’s security and defense policies. But a defining example of his commitment to underdogs and those he saw as oppressed came during his assignment in the late 1970s as a junior diplomat with the rank of second secretary at the Australian mission in Pretoria.
In San Francisco, tax revenue is projected to drop by as much as a billion dollars over the next six years. In order to bring in these new residents, cities will have to shift some of their priorities. Research coauthored by Steven Levitt of "Freakonomics" found that increases in violent and property crimes were correlated with city residents migrating to the suburbs. All is not lostThere's little doubt that superstar cities like New York and San Francisco have serious problems on their hands.
