My mom made sacrifices so we could afford joyful 'nonessentials'Much of my childhood was spent terrorized by my sociopathic father. Her philosophy — that spending money on "non-essential" pick-me-ups is actually pretty damn essential — kept us mentally (and financially) afloat.
