Some Republicans warned that the party’s failure to counter abortion attacks cost them crucial seats that year. In 2022, exit polling found Democrats had an 11-point advantage on the issue of abortion. And in this new NBC poll, Harris’ advantage was just under 20 points.

In the seven most competitive Senate races, Democratic campaigns and outside groups launched 33 TV ads on abortion just in the last week, according to the ad-tracking firm AdImpact. Just one Republican ad, a Spanish-language spot from an outside group targeting Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen of Nevada, mentioned abortion. The number of Republican women in the House has tripled to a record 36, including two nonvoting members. Others involved in the effort to boost GOP women are also hopeful they can reach a new milestone this year. The number of House candidates has dropped overall since 2022, a redistricting year that brought a surge of new candidates. The Center for Women and Politics found the steepest drop was among Republican women. For Stefanik, the effort to recruit more GOP women to run for the House has been a resounding success.

Jim Pillen announced Tuesday he will not call a special legislative session to change how the state allocates its electoral votes, dashing Republican hopes that the switch could happen before November. Former President Donald Trump and his allies have been pushing state lawmakers to switch to a winner-take-all system, in which the presidential candidate who carries the state receives all five of its electoral votes. Currently, three of the state’s votes are awarded to the candidate who wins each of its three congressional districts. Jim Pillen, a Republican, will not call a special session to change the way the state allocates its Electoral College votes. "Based on the lack of 33 votes, I have no plans to call a special session on this issue prior to the 2024 election.

In today's edition, our team breaks down a key Nebraska state senator's decision to stand in the way of a Trump-backed drive to change how the state allocates its electoral votes. Trump allies have pushed for a special legislative session intended for the Republican-controlled legislature to change Nebraska to a winner-take-all system instead of awarding electoral votes by congressional district. The developments appear to cap months of deliberations over whether Nebraska lawmakers could change the way the state apportions its electoral votes in a way that would benefit Trump. Nebraska allocates its electoral votes by congressional district, and the swing district around Omaha has twice gone to Democrats in recent years, giving them one electoral vote from an otherwise ruby-red state. But if lawmakers changed that to a winner-take-all model, Trump would be all but certain to win all of Nebraska’s electoral votes.

In today’s edition, we look at how Donald Trump is handling the political fallout from CNN's bombshell report on North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson. “North Carolina is a vital part of that plan. Additionally, Republican members of the North Carolina congressional delegation, including Sens. The political fallout from Robinson’s past comments could be particularly tough for Trump because of the importance of North Carolina as one of seven key swing states on the presidential map. The DNC launched digital ads and billboards featuring Trump heaping praise on Robinson, while a new Harris campaign ad links Trump to Robinson’s past anti-abortion comments.

Kenneth Hauck wasn’t sure how he would vote when the race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris was just a hypothetical scenario. Now it’s a reality, and Hauck still isn’t sure whom he will support — but he’s leaning toward Harris. Of the 21 previously undecided voters who recently spoke with NBC News, the largest group included nine voters like Hauck who said that they are still undecided but that they are concerned about Trump and are leaning toward picking Harris. Four more are definitely supporting Harris, while one is backing Trump, and three are leaning toward him. The voters, who come from different backgrounds and corners of the country, are bound by skepticism about politics and politicians.

Nebraska voters will weigh two different abortion-related constitutional amendments this fall, with the secretary of state's office certifying both measures Friday to appear on the ballot. “Barring any legal challenges, this November general election ballot will host two ballot measures that appear in direct conflict with each other, which could be the first time this has happened in Nebraska’s history,” Secretary of State Bob Evnen said in a statement. Nebraska law currently bans abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions for rape, incest and saving the mother’s life. If both amendments pass, the one with the most votes prevails. Democrats are hoping the ballot measures will help boost turnout in a critical presidential election cycle.

Businessman Eric Hovde won the Wisconsin Republican primary for Senate, NBC News projects, setting up a critical battleground state race against Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin. Baldwin’s seat is a top priority for both parties in the battle for control of the closely divided Senate. Baldwin has also fared better than the top of the Democratic ticket in some recent Wisconsin polling. An independently wealthy businessman, Hovde, who ran unsuccessfully for Senate in 2012, has already loaned his campaign $13 million. With Hovde long viewed as the favorite to win the GOP nomination, the two candidates have already been trading barbs.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., fended off several primary challengers Tuesday, NBC News projects, a victory for progressives after two of her fellow members of the “squad” suffered defeats this summer. Omar defeated former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels, who lost to her by just 2 percentage points in the 2022 primary, and two other challengers in Minnesota’s 5th District. Unlike other progressives who have sharply criticized Israel, Omar did not face an onslaught of attack ads from outside groups. At the same point in the 2022 primary, her campaign had spent just $71,000. Samuels’ campaign, meanwhile, spent $1.2 million on this year’s race.
