BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut judge has set Jan. 23 as the date for a new Democratic primary election in the Bridgeport mayor's race after having tossed out the September election results because of alleged ballot box stuffing. Judge William Clark issued the order late Friday afternoon after Mayor Joe Ganim and challenger John Gomes agreed on the Jan. 23 date. Ganim beat Gomes in the primary by 251 votes out of nearly 8,200 cast. Gomes won the in-person voting count, but Ganim pulled ahead during the absentee ballot count. City of Bridgeport MayorResidents of Bridgeport, Conn., are voting in perhaps the most confusing election in the country. A judge tossed out the results of the Democratic mayoral primary, citing voting irregularities, but had no authority to postpone the general election. The Associated Press said it will tabulate vote totals in Tuesday’s Bridgeport mayoral race, but that it will not call a winner until legal issues surrounding the Democratic primary are resolved.

Among the many conspiracy theories that have fueled that belief on the right are those surrounding ballot drop boxes. Users have promoted the investigation as evidence for the persistent, false narratives about widespread fraud connected to ballot drop boxes. Some Republican lawmakers, who had raised concerns about the security of drop boxes during the pandemic, said the Bridgeport videos prove they were correct. In many cases, drop boxes are placed in locations where they can be monitored by election staff or security cameras. “It’s not the ballot boxes that are the problem,” said Cheri Quickmire, executive director of the voter advocacy group Common Cause in Connecticut.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim, who went to prison for corruption and then regained his old job back eight years ago in a remarkable political comeback, has won the Democratic nomination for another term. Ganim, 63, defeated John Gomes, the city’s former chief administrative officer, by a narrow margin Tuesday in a party primary. First elected mayor in 1991, Ganim was in office 12 years, then quit when he was caught accepting bribes and kickbacks. Convicted of racketeering, extortion and other crimes, he spent seven years in prison, but then won his old job back in an election in 2015. Gomes, 52, who immigrated from the Cape Verde Islands, announced he was running for mayor against his old boss after losing his city job last year.
