Washington CNN —President Joe Biden on Thursday will join Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, the only living two-term Democratic presidents, aiming to use their star power to woo big-pocketed donors as Biden tries to join their ranks. The fundraiser is being held off-camera, though pool reporters will be able to report on the three presidents’ remarks. The Biden campaign said ahead of the fundraiser it had raised more than $25 million – making it the most successful single political fundraiser ever in terms of dollars raised. The fundraiser on Thursday is expected to be just the beginning of Obama’s involvement in Biden’s campaign. He is expected to take a larger role in Biden’s campaign – including traveling to college campuses and crucial battleground stakes – closer to November.

CNN —Republican National Committee members have received a three-page memo from Chairman Michael Whatley announcing and explaining various aspects of the RNC’s merger with the Trump campaign. “As is tradition and governed by applicable law, the RNC is merging operations with the Trump campaign. The memo also announces the hires Whatley has made, including a slate of new lawyers who will focus on election fraud claims. Whatley’s memo also said the RNC is planning to keep its community centers and the Bank Your Vote program. Whatley also said the RNC has completed a joint fundraising agreement with the Trump campaign and has brought in a data liaison to work with other Republican committees and state parties.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump responded Friday to the Alabama Supreme Court’s in vitro fertilization ruling last week by saying he supports the “availability of IVF” and calling on the Alabama legislature to “act quickly to find an immediate solution” to preserve its availability in the state. “We want to make it easier for mothers and fathers to have babies, not harder! That includes supporting the availability of fertility treatments like IVF in every State in America,” the former president said on his Truth Social platform. The controversial decision has enraged abortion rights activists and thrown into doubt the ability of women in Alabama to undergo IVF to become pregnant, as fertility clinics now weigh new and potentially onerous legal liabilities. Republican candidates and lawmakers, including Trump presidential rival Nikki Haley, have scrambled for coherent responses to the ruling over the past week.

CNN —The US Commerce Department is restricting six Chinese companies tied to the Chinese army’s aerospace programs from obtaining US technology without government authorization. US fighter jets shot down the balloon, which American officials have since claimed is part of an extensive surveillance program run by the Chinese military. The six companies are: Beijing Nanjiang Aerospace Technology; China Electronics Technology Group Corporation 48th Research Institute; Dongguan Lingkong Remote Sensing Technology; Eagles Men Aviation Science and Technology Group; Guangzhou Tian-Hai-Xiang Aviation Technology; and Shanxi Eagles Men Aviation Science and Technology Group. The inclusion of the companies on the Commerce Department’s “Entity List,” sends “a clear message to companies, governments, and other stakeholders globally that the entities on the list present a threat to national security,” the statement said. “Today’s action makes clear that entities that seek to harm US national security and sovereignty will be cut off from accessing US technologies.”CNN has reached out to the companies involved and the Chinese government for comment.

CNN —Defeated Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake has filed suit in Arizona Superior Court challenging the certification of the state’s election. “Accordingly, Lake is entitled to an order setting aside the election in its entirety and ordering a new election,” Lake’s attorneys write in the suit. All four GOP nominees that were at the top of the Arizona ticket had echoed Trump’s lies about the 2020 election. Arizona was a key 2022 battleground for governor and Senate, and likely will be again for president in 2024. Lake has repeatedly said she would not have certified Joe Biden’s win in Arizona in 2020.
