An overheated wheel bearing on a railcar was the likely cause of the train derailment in eastern Ohio this month, according to a preliminary report Thursday from the National Transportation Safety Board. When a detector along the tracks alerted the train crew to the issue, a train engineer applied brakes to slow and stop the train, the NTSB said. The crew later observed fire and smoke and alerted authorities.
A Norfolk Southern cargo train of 150 cars derailed near the Ohio town of East Palestine close to the Pennsylvania border on Feb. 3. Of the 38 railcars that derailed, 11 were hazardous-material cars, and officials assumed the contents of nine cars had vented, seeped into the ground and nearby waterways, or burned. Drone footage released by the National Transportation Safety Board two days after the crash shows dozens of train cars still on the tracks, some still on fire.

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.—Trixie Parkes’s 1976 wood-framed cottage long served as her home and main source of income, because she rented two units on the top floor to tourists. But when Hurricane Ian tore through in late September, it destroyed most of the first floor and gouged a gaping hole in the second-floor walls. She didn’t have flood insurance, which she said became too expensive after Hurricane Irma in 2017. Ms. Parkes, 59, plans to sell her property. “Maybe somebody will come and offer me a lot of money and I can walk away.”
