Like most craft brewing operations, Athletic Brewing pumps out IPAs, dark beers, lite beers, hazy, special edition and maybe even fruity offerings during the summer. Similar to other breweries, you'll find huge industrial barrels of hops and wheat, and maybe a couple of brewing awards displayed. But the one thing you won't find at Athletic Brewing is alcohol.

London CNN —The world’s largest brewer may have lost as much as $1.4 billion in sales because of the backlash to its brief partnership with a transgender influencer to promote Bud Light beer. Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD) reported record revenues for 2023 Thursday but said its “full growth potential was constrained” by its US business, where sales were hurt by a boycott of Bud Light over a sponsored Instagram post with Dylan Mulvaney. In North America, organic revenue, seen as the best measure of operating performance, plunged $1.4 billion last year as beer sales by volume tumbled in the region, primarily due to a decline in Bud Light sales in the United States. Bud Light sales tanked after the company’s partnership with Mulvaney sparked an anti-trans backlash and calls for a boycott. The firestorm saw Mexican lager Modelo Especial dethrone Bud Light last May as America’s top-selling beer, a title the brand had held for more than two decades.

Up to 450,000 people are expected to be in Vegas by Super Bowl weekend, and this influx of people has caused the city's hotel prices to surge. When big events come to town, whether it be the Super Bowl or Taylor Swift's Eras Tour , cities tend to get an economic boost . These economic impacts don't stop at cities' boundaries: surrounding areas like Boulder City could see an uptick in visitors and spending as well. He expects a similar — if not bigger impact — during Super Bowl week. Indeed, studies show that drinking alcohol is less in vogue with younger millennials and Gen Z. Mounting concern around weight loss drugs GLP-1 drugs, which mimic the action of the glucagon-like peptide-1 hormone and stimulate insulin secretion after a meal, lower blood sugar and send feeling of fullness to the brain. What's more, GLP-1 drugs are an overwhelmingly American topic, with most Europeans unaware of them or unwilling to pay high prices. In total, GLP-1 users are only a very small slice of total alcohol consumers, said Spiros Malandrakis, lead alcohol industry researcher at Euromonitor International. The most vulnerable purveyors are those that are trailing the shift in consumption, notably domestic, non-premium beer brands.

The cannabis company Tilray expanded its position in the craft brew industry, completing the acquisition of eight beer brands from Anheuser-Busch that it had announced over the summer. Included in the deal are well known labels like Shock Top, Breckenridge Brewery, Blue Point Brewing Company, 10 Barrel Brewing Company, Redhook Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewing, Square Mile Cider Company, and HiBall Energy. The New York City company also owns SweetWater Brewing Company, Montauk Brewing Company, Alpine Beer Company, and Green Flash Brewing Company. Tilray said that the transaction, which was announced in August, will triple its beer sales volume from four million cases to 12 million. A deluge of criticism and hate erupted soon after Mulvaney cracked open a Bud Light in an Instagram video.

REUTERS/Rick Wilking/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 20 (Reuters) - Brewer Anheuser-Busch said on Wednesday it has stopped cutting off the tails of Clydesdale horses used in publicity for its Budweiser brand of beer after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) launched a campaign against the practice. "The safety and well-being of our beloved Clydesdales is our top priority. The practice of equine tail docking was discontinued earlier this year," Anheuser-Busch, part of the Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI.BR) global brewing giant, said in a statement. Facing pressure from animal rights activists, Anheuser-Busch announced on Wednesday that it had ended the practice of amputating the tails of its Budweiser Clydesdales, the familiar equine figures in the brewing company’s advertising campaigns for nearly a century. The move came as Anheuser-Busch, Budweiser’s parent company, has faced criticism for the practice, which is banned in several countries and has been denounced as inhumane by animal welfare organizations. “The safety and well-being of our beloved Clydesdales is our top priority,” an Anheuser-Busch spokeswoman said in a statement on Wednesday. “The practice of equine tail docking was discontinued earlier this year.”Earlier this year, Anheuser-Busch drew criticism after the release of an investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, that documented the amputations at breeding and training facilities for the Budweiser Clydesdales in Missouri.

Canadian cannabis company Tilray is one of the biggest craft beer sellers in the US. On Monday, Anheuser-Busch said it was selling 8 craft beer brands to Tilray. Bud Light parent company Anheuser-Busch said on Monday that it was selling off eight of its craft beer brands to a Canadian cannabis company that's been inching into the craft beer space for quite some time now. It would make Tilray the 5th-largest craft beer company in the US, up from its 9th place ranking today, according to analysts from Jefferies. TD Cowen analysts said that craft beer sales declined 6% in 2021 and 9% last year.

Over an $8.50 pint of craft beer from Aspen Brewing Company, which is comparable to what I pay at home in Chicago, I realized that Aspen, Colo., is not expensive by big-city standards. The Economic Research Institute, which compiles financial data for public and private organizations, pegs the cost of living in Aspen at 51 percent higher than the average in the United States, a little less than a city like Seattle. As a professionally penny-pinching traveler, I try to avoid paying urban prices in the mountains. In the summer in Aspen, apart from my weakness for microbrews, I didn’t have to. Cycling, if you can avoid expensive rentals, is a bargain.

A brewery in California is using recycled wastewater to make beer, the New York Times reports. The company is using technology designed by NASA for astronauts to recycle water in space. Recycled wastewater tends to actually be cleaner than the water breweries can get on-site, multiple brewery owners told the Times. Last year, Stanford professor William Mitch published a study showing that wastewater recycled using reverse osmosis resulted in a product as clean as groundwater, sometimes even more so. Just last month, NASA reported that scientists on the International Space Station had successfully recycled 98% of their wastewater for the first time.

Unionized workers at Anchor Brewing Company, the oldest craft brewer in the United States, want to buy the 127-year-old company and run it as a co-op to save it from shutting down, a union official said. The workers have “decided to launch an effort to purchase the brewery and run it as a worker co-op,” according to a proposal letter from the Anchor employees. Pedro de Sá, the business agent at International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 6, whose members include workers at Anchor, sent the proposal on Wednesday to Mike Minami, the president of Sapporo USA, which owns the company. “All we want is a fair shot at being able to continue to do our jobs, make the beer we love, and keep this historic institution open,” the letter said. “We do not want the brewery and brand we love to be sold off before we even had a chance.”

But recent economic pressures proved too much for the oldest craft brewer in the country: After 127 years, Anchor Brewing Company is shutting down. Anchor added that although it had stopped brewing, it would continue packing and distributing beer while available. In 2021, Anchor Brewing tried to adapt, rebranding and bottling and canning more of its beers to sell in grocery stores. But those changes “couldn’t make up for the significant loss of sales,” he added. In a last-ditch attempt to stay afloat, Anchor limited sales of its beer to California, and stopped producing one of its products, a Christmas ale.

But the impending closure of Anchor Brewing — an iconic San Francisco staple as famous as sourdough bread, Ghirardelli Chocolate or Rice-A-Roni — prompted it to offer a heartfelt eulogy. In court documents seen by Reuters, Cargill expressed interest in bidding for the assets but sought clarification about the liabilities attached to the plants. Geraldo Gouveia Jr, Imcopa's attorney, told Reuters the bankruptcy judge has made no decision yet related to the request to suspend the court-supervised auction. Bunge, which has long sought to acquire Imcopa's assets, signed a contract to buy the Araucaria and Cambe plants in May 2020. Citing bankruptcy court filings, Imcopa's Gouveia Jr said Bunge has publicly reiterated interest in buying Imcopa's plants. The assets remain attractive because they produce high value soy byproducts for export and the domestic market.
