One could easily mistake Alesong Brewing & Blending for a winery. The brewery, which opened in 2016 in Eugene, Ore., makes beer-wine hybrids with local grapes and sells barrel-aged beer through a membership club. “If you take the word beer out of our business model, we look a lot more like a winery,” said Brian Coombs, a founder and production manager at Alesong, who previously worked at the nearby King Estate Winery, in the Willamette Valley wine region. Last September, Alesong introduced its first wine, a pinot gris, in an effort to broaden the brewery’s creative ambitions and customer base. “I want to look at wine from a brewer’s perspective.”

That sudden volatility highlights something that we often write about in Before the Bell: the major mismatch between policymaker and investor expectations for interest rate cuts this year. Federal Reserve officials, including Chair Jerome Powell, have repeatedly said they envision at most three rate cuts in 2024. Wall Street, meanwhile, has ignored those warnings and has opted to practice unflinching optimism instead. It’s not the first time they’ve had to learn an important lesson: Don’t fight the Fed. Bad for the markets, good for the Fed: Markets clearly don’t often take kindly to higher-for-longer interest rates, which can negatively impact earnings and stock prices.

CNN —A typo in Lyft’s fourth-quarter earnings report caused the rideshare company’s stock to surge and then dramatically reverse course on Tuesday. In an earnings statement released after the bell, Lyft estimated its gross margin would expand by 500 basis points, or 5 percentage points. That sent the company’s stock shooting higher. On Lyft’s earnings call, held shortly after the release, the company’s chief financial officer, Erin Brewer, provided the correct estimate. “This is actually a correction for the press release,” Brewer said.

Carlsberg says Moscow stole its Russian business

Copenhagen — Carlsberg has cut all ties with its Russian business and refuses to enter a deal with Russia’s government that would make Moscow’s seizure of the assets look legitimate, the brewer’s new CEO said Tuesday. However, after Carlsberg announced in June that it had found a buyer for the business, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the temporary seizure of Carlsberg’s stake in the local brewer the following month. Carlsberg had eight breweries and about 8,400 employees in Russia, and took a 9.9 billion Danish crown ($1.41 billion) write-down on Baltika last year. Aarup-Andersen said that from the limited interactions with Baltika’s management and Russian authorities since July, Carlsberg had not been able to find any acceptable solution to the situation. Earlier this month, Carlsberg retaliated by ending license agreements for its brands in Russia that have enabled Baltika to produce, market and sell all Carlsberg products in the country.

Bud Light sales keep sinking
  + stars: | 2023-10-31 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —Bud Light continues to drag Anheuser-Busch InBev’s bottom line in the United States, but the world’s biggest brewer’s sales rose because of higher prices. The company reported a 13.5% decline in third-quarter US revenue per 100 liters, a key measure of beer sales, as an ongoing backlash to Bud Light continues. The brand’s customers turned their backs on Bud Light after the company partnered with a transgender influencer – and then muddled its response. Tuesday’s report painted a bleak picture for Bud Light, sales and shipments of which have weakened dramatically since its brief and limited partnership with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney in the spring. Sales of Bud Light are still sinking, with volumes down 30% year-over-year for the four weeks ending on October 7, according to NIQ data given to Beer Business Daily newsletter.

Walgreens has been shifting away from pharmacy and retail to focus more on health care services, with mixed results. “While the wisdom of this move is debatable, health care is not Ms. Brewer’s forte.”Before joining Walgreens, Ms. Brewer was the chief operating officer of Starbucks and previously served as chief executive of Sam’s Club, a division of Walmart. As Walgreens leans more into the health care business, it faces several hurdles, industry experts said. It is rare for a woman to replace another female chief executive.

Walgreens CEO steps down
  + stars: | 2023-09-01 | by ( Parija Kavilanz | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —Walgreens Boots Alliance on Friday said that CEO Rosalind Brewer has stepped down less than three years after taking the helm at the pharmacy chain. Walgreens’ board named Ginger Graham, a member of the board, as interim CEO as the company launches a search for a permanent CEO. Walgreens slashed its full-year profit guidance in June, warning of softening consumer spending and a pullback in demand for Covid vaccines. Under Brewer, Walgreens had implemented cost-saving measures in an effort to boost profitability in its healthcare segment. Walgreens says it’s a digital-first experimental store to benefit customers and not designed to deter theft, Walgreens says.

But recent economic pressures proved too much for the oldest craft brewer in the country: After 127 years, Anchor Brewing Company is shutting down. Anchor added that although it had stopped brewing, it would continue packing and distributing beer while available. In 2021, Anchor Brewing tried to adapt, rebranding and bottling and canning more of its beers to sell in grocery stores. But those changes “couldn’t make up for the significant loss of sales,” he added. In a last-ditch attempt to stay afloat, Anchor limited sales of its beer to California, and stopped producing one of its products, a Christmas ale.

CNN —A man from California who ran a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme where he claimed to turn cow manure into green energy has been sentenced to over six years in prison, the US attorney’s office for the Eastern District of California announced this week. Ray Brewer, 66, stole over $8.7 million from investors, court records from between March 2014 and December 2019 showed. Brewer’s investors were meant to receive tax incentives and 66% of all net profits as part of the scheme, authorities said. The image shows the fake digester picture that Ray Brewer sent to the investors he defrauded. Brewer assumed a new identity and relocated to Montana after his investors became aware of his fraud, authorities said.

Businesses are stuck with trillions of dollars of commercial real estate they need to use. But supply and demand are starting to even out: National demand for office space in May was up 13% from April. But are corporations downsizing the amount of office space they rent as they permanently shift some roles to work from home? Have you seen a shift in the commercial real estate market since the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in March? The commercial real estate market is largely a regional business, landlords are local.

Since, under UK law, brewers pay less tax on drinks with a lower alcohol content, the newspaper claimed that the companies had pocketed this saving rather than passing it onto customers through lower prices. Brewer Greene King has cut the alcohol content of its Old Speckled Hen pale ale to 4.8% from 5%. In January, Dutch brewer Heineken lowered the ABV content of Foster’s larger — which it sells in the UK — to 3.7% from 4%. Consumer price inflation in the UK remains stubbornly high, reaching 8.7% in April. Inflation has fallen back in recent months, but still clocks in higher than in any other country in the Group of Seven.

Starbucks pours weak tea on virtual union talks

NEW YORK, March 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - After more than a decade of infusing its coffee with technology, Starbucks (SBUX.O) is putting a lid on one aspect of the digital transition. The $113 billion Frappuccino maker wants to negotiate with unions in person rather than allowing members to join talks by videoconference. Mobile orders accounted for about a quarter of transactions at U.S. stores in the latest quarter. Starbucks also became one of the first big companies to hold a virtual shareholder meeting after the pandemic struck and it hosted the annual event online again last week. The Super Bowl ads on Sunday are poised to promote an unusual mix of alcohol brands, gambling and Jesus. The Super Bowl still regularly draws an audience of around 100 million people, making it TV’s biggest event of the year and advertising’s biggest night. Planters’ Super Bowl ad features comedians mocking Mr. Peanut. The ads are likely to strike a lighter tone than the occasionally somber messages of Super Bowl ads in recent, highly politicized years or the early pandemic, said Anjali S. Bal, an associate professor of marketing at Babson College. Many Super Bowl advertisers have again released their ads well before Super Bowl Sunday to increase their chances of being seen.
An ad from Molson Coors announcing that it is teaming up with online sports-betting company DraftKings. Molson Coors Beverage Co. is seizing on the popularity of online sports betting to generate buzz during Super Bowl LVII, as the maker of Coors Light and Miller Lite returns to the big game after a 33-year hiatus. The Chicago-based company had long been kept out of the Super Bowl because rival Anheuser-Busch InBev NV had exclusive rights to be the sole alcohol brand to be featured during the game, which it gave up last year. In anticipation of its return, Molson recently ran print, online and outdoor ads asking consumers which of its two light beers—Miller Lite or Coors Light—deserves the brewer’s coveted Super Bowl spot.
Budweiser is promoting its alcohol-free lager at the upcoming soccer World Cup in Qatar, balancing its role as the official beer of the event with the strict regulations on the sale and consumption of alcohol in the predominantly Muslim host nation. FIFA announced last month that it has so far sold 2.45 million World Cup tickets out of a possible 3 million. The brand said it plans to roll out localized ads and digital content in 70 countries as part of its World Cup marketing plans. It will also distribute more than 1 billion limited-edition bottles of Budweiser, each featuring a unique QR code linking to a competition to win free prizes including beer and World Cup tickets. And Anheuser-Busch InBev will use its World Cup sponsorship to promote the introduction of its direct-to-consumer e-commerce website and app TaDa, starting with 10 markets in Latin America, Mr. Marcondes said.
