Some scientific studies have found that deforestation causes stress in bats, and stressed bats carry more viruses and shed more germs in their saliva, urine and feces. It spiked following the highway’s construction, making the Amazon in the early 1980s a rallying cry for the global environmental movement. When examining spillover risk, scientists use the number of bat species in a given area as a key variable. When humans encroach on their habitat, and bat species commingle, the viral cocktail intensifies. “Odds of it being documented are very slim,” said Caio Graco Zeppelini, an ecologist and bat researcher at the Federal University of Bahia.

Brazil has yet to publish its official annual figures for Cerrado deforestation, based on satellite analysis by the government's space research agency Inpe. The Cerrado neighbors the Amazon, occupying more than 2 million square kilometers in central Brazil – larger than Mexico. FARM-DRIVEN DEFORESTATIONThe Brazilian savanna is now a major concern for top grains traders, who have broadly pledged to eliminate deforestation from their supply chains by 2025. LONDON, Dec 13 (Reuters) - Global mining giant BHP Group (BHP.AX) was on Tuesday accused of trying to "forever put off" the question of liability for a 2015 dam collapse that triggered Brazil's worst environmental disaster. BHP, the world's biggest miner by market value, denies liability and earlier this month applied to join Vale to the case. BHP has applied to the Supreme Court to overturn that decision and its application is pending. He argued BHP was trying to "forever put off the question of substantive liability for another few years – that would no doubt be very convenient." Charles Gibson, representing BHP, said in court documents that the list of current claimants was "chaotic" and there was "continuing uncertainty" around whether thousands of individuals wanted to continue their cases.

CNN —Brazil superstar Neymar sprained his right ankle in his side’s opening World Cup match – a 2-0 win over Serbia – on Thursday, Brazilian team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar confirmed last night in a post-game press conference. Lasmar said that the team had already begun treating Neymar and would have more clarity in 24 to 48 hours. Neymar is playing in his third World Cup. Brazil began this World Cup as the favorite to win its first World Cup since 2002, with a 20% chance of winning the tournament according to Nielsen’s Gracenote, after losing just three times in 50 matches since it was eliminated from the 2018 World Cup by Belgium. Neymar will face a race to be back to full fitness by the time Brazil plays Switzerland in its next Group G match on November 28.

In an experiment, the researchers submitted 20 ads with inaccurate claims to Facebook, TikTok and YouTube. TikTok approved 90% of ads that contained blatantly false or misleading information, the researchers found. The researchers withdrew the ads after going through the approval process, if they were approved, so the ads containing misinformation were not shown to users. Last month, TikTok took additional steps to safeguard the veracity of political content ahead of the midterms. Google also took steps in September to protect against election misinformation, elevating trustworthy information and displaying it more prominently across services including search and YouTube.
