Opinion: Destined to be a lame duck

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. When Biden and Trump meet in a debate on CNN Thursday, expect part of the audience to be wondering exactly who and what will come next. Biden, who’s battling low approval ratings, is sticking with Vice President Kamala Harris, whose polls are also bleak. There were 28, and we’ve had 11 so far this year, Bridget Johnson noted in the first of a CNN Opinion series about America’s preparedness. “It’s a measure of his hold on American society that he’s still revered a half-century later,” wrote Frederic J. Frommer.

I´m in my 30s, but I joke that I´ve been a grandma since birth. I'm an only child, and my grandmother raised me while my parents were out of the picture. My grandmother's house was on a peninsula, a seven-mile stretch of the Atlantic on the south shore of Massachusetts. I'd never been able to see my grandmother from the water and dreaded seeing her become a blurry speck on shore. I also don't trust myself to teach someone about the world when I´ve barely figured it out myself.

As a psychologist who researches emotional intelligence, I know people with high EQ tend to have a critical skill I like to call "emotional sovereignty." When you know how to handle your emotions, you can harness them for creativity, energy, deeper relationships, and greater happiness and fulfillment. Others may be surprised by the fact that you no longer suppress your emotions — they might even be a little uncomfortable with it at first. Taylor Swift's 15 best breakup songs, ranked

Larry Busacca/Getty ImagesWhen "Speak Now" was released, Swift wasn't shy about framing the album as a diary set to music. "Every single song is like a roadmap to what that relationship stood for, with little markers that maybe everyone won't know, but there are things that were little nuances of the relationship, little hints. And every single song is like that." "Dear John" is the most obvious example, likely owing its title to Swift's ex John Mayer (though it also doubles as a reference to a wartime breakup letter, historically sent from a woman to a soldier). Indeed, the tabloid fodder attached to "Dear John" may have threatened to eclipse the song's power, had 20-year-old Swift been a less capable songwriter.

Stuck in the extended position on the leg machine, I couldn't believe small talk at the gym could go so awry. When she went to speak to the doctor, my body knew: it was over. When I went sober six years ago, dating and getting laid was the last thing on my mind. After all, I'd gone sober for a reason: to self-optimize, and I couldn't do that with a man snoring in my ear. It felt like alcohol and I had always been in an open relationship, but now it was time for me to fly solo. Don't obsess over small thingsThat said, I couldn't blame all my past failures on the men I'd dated. Talking to men sober felt like doing it for the first time.

Or at least that was the expectation conveyed by pre-war US wargames that simulated a Russian invasion of Eastern Europe. The think tank convened an internal workshop to assess why its wargames had so overestimated Russian military prowess. Most of them examined a Russian invasion of the Baltic States (one also covered a Ukraine invasion), and how NATO might respond. In those games, Russian forces were able to quickly overrun Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania before NATO could stop them. A destroyed Russian tank is seen as Ukrainian serviceman rides a tractor and tows a Russian military vehicle near the village of Dolyna in Ukraine's Kharkiv region in September 2023.

Rochester, New Hampshire CNN —Bonnie Cote never considered voting for anyone other than former President Donald Trump. Despite months of campaigning and millions spent on ads, mailers and door knocking in the Granite State, some Trump supporters said they were unfamiliar with Haley. “Everybody came out for Trump, Trump, Trump… so, why not go for Trump?”Kirwin said she thought Trump was “a little crazy” and his found his personality “awful,” but she also recalled watching him in the first 2016 general election debate against Hillary Clinton. “And make no mistake, we will restore our national pride.”It’s an argument that has worked on some former Trump voters. CNN —Treating loneliness and social isolation may put people classified as obese at a lower risk for health complications, according to a new study. Social isolation was found to be a greater risk factor for all causes of mortality, including cancer and cardiovascular disease, than depression, anxiety and lifestyle risk factors — which included alcohol, exercise and diet, according to the study. But the findings do point to improving “social isolation as a potential remedy for the reduction of mortality,” he said. “Think of maintaining a social network like any other health-promoting activity: exercising regularly, eating well, looking after yourself,” Canli said. And fatphobia can lead communities to make it harder for people with obesity to feel understood and accepted, she said.

I think of that encounter from time to time as I ponder the unspeakable violence of the war raging in the Middle East. I’m also heartbroken to witness the profound pain of my Jewish and Muslim friends and their growing fears for their own safety. Intolerance was already on the rise but the events of the past two months have sent it into overdrive. Indirectly, therefore, public opinion in the US seems likely to have some potential impact on the Israeli government’s actions. Despite backlash from other sections of their own community, some Jewish groups have marched alongside pro-Palestinian protesters to demand a ceasefire in Gaza.

Everything will change in 2026, when USF opens a $340 million, 35,000-seat stadium of its own on the eastern edge of the Tampa campus, university officials say. All of this frenzied activity unfolding on one day represents just a snapshot of the complex legal morass now surrounding Trump. And while Monday was notable for a head-spinning sequence of legal maneuvering, it did not even encompass all of the pending cases against Trump. When it comes to Smith’s indictment, Trump’s lawyers are arguing that he was within his rights to claim the election was stolen. Trump’s legal plight reverberates in 2024 campaignAny normal political candidate would have seen their political ambitions crushed by even one of the cases in Trump’s bulging portfolio of legal jeopardy. Opinion | Should Gay People Seek to Be Seen as ‘Normal’?
  + stars: | 2023-06-29 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “As a Gay Man, I’ll Never Be Normal,” by Richard Morgan (Opinion guest essay, nytimes.com, June 25):Mr. Morgan just reinforces the concept of normalcy. Young people today don’t care so much about the “who is normal/abnormal” space that the author writes about. We should not retreat from the many hues in our “rainbow” of people, including all those who dwell in the borders. We should neither spend too much time separating out the colors (as the author does), nor dig our heels into concepts of “true” or “pure” queerness. Young people aren’t normalizing queer; they are finding newer and braver ways of being themselves.

What Chinese Calligraphy Taught Me About Myself

In calligraphy, the idea is to replicate the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own. I was trying to make sense of this tangle by writing lines, but at its heart, calligraphy is a sensuous practice. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could transcend its own cultural constraints. I had been learning calligraphy to try to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. In my visceral responses, I observe how calligraphy reveals our intuition for beauty.

Change is afoot in the conservative city state with a softening of attitudes and growing tolerance of gay issues, which some members of the LGBT community and academics attribute to the November lifting of a ban on sex between men. But the historic lifting of the ban was not all welcomed by LGBT people. The repeal of the gay sex ban was not universally welcomed. LGBT issues are appearing in the typically conservative domestic media, known for toeing the government line. The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore this month advised teachers to "address socio-religious issues, including LGBT issues, with wisdom, kindness, compassion and mercy".

If there’s a safe way to take a walk in the rain, wind or fog, “lean into the elements,” said Rob Walker, the author of “The Art of Noticing,” a book about finding opportunities to be amazed in everyday life. Revel in the dramatically shifting landscapes — the drama of wind whipping through the trees, or the way that rain can make greenery look more vivid. “I don’t want to encourage anyone to go kick a football around in a hurricane,” Walker said.

Novo's inability to keep up with a burst in U.S. demand for Wegovy has effectively delayed the launch in Britain and elsewhere in Europe. A company spokesperson would not comment on any commitment to supply its drug for the British pilot. The British government said that only 35,000 people would have access to Wegovy under the specialist hospital services, but tens of thousands more could be eligible. Duane Mellor, a dietitian and senior lecturer at Aston University's medical school, told Reuters drugs like Wegovy were a tool, not the solution. Wegovy works by mimicking a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that triggers the feeling of fullness in the body after eating.
