To maintain a through line among different drinks, you need a deeply flavorful base. During the holidays, she often makes cranberry shrub by combining equal weights fresh cranberries, sugar and apple cider vinegar in a food processor. Since the shrub has plenty of acid, you don’t need to add fresh citrus to the drinks you make with it. Another workhorse base is oleo-saccharum, which is classically made by muddling citrus peels with sugar before setting the combination aside overnight. In this flavorful base, the sugar slowly extracts the oils from the peels and the sticky-sweet mixture adds dimension and texture to drinks.

ABSOLUTION, by Alice McDermottAlice McDermott is rightly celebrated for her granular, nuanced portraits of mid-20th-century life, with a particular focus on Irish Americans. Her fans may be startled, then, to find themselves plunged into 1963 Saigon at the start of her enveloping new novel, “Absolution,” whose lofty title belies its sensory, gritty humanity. McDermott’s contextual leap is not as great as it might seem. A bossy insider and mother of three, Charlene masterminds a “cabal” of charitable military-industrial wives bent on helping poor and ailing Vietnamese. Their work consists of channeling black-market profits into buying trinkets and candy to distribute to hospitalized children (some of whom may be recovering from war wounds) and their impoverished families.

Cancer changed my macho views on accepting help

I assumed I could fight cancer on my ownI’m not wired to cry, and it’s not just because I’m a man. Drawing on my lineage as I faced cancer, I didn’t think I was one of those weaklings who would need help. Friends who had battled cancer offered advice, grocery shopping, respite care and rides to doctor appointments. There was no cancer in the 34 lymph nodes that were removed, which means there is little chance it spread. Even so, in case there are undetectable stray cancer cells, I will undergo five more chemotherapy sessions.

Sheryl Sandberg and her Lean In organization are rolling out a new program for girls ages 11-15, designed to encourage girls to set leadership goals, navigate risk, and identify and challenge bias. Sandberg says she was inspired to create this new initiative because the adult Lean In community is thriving, with 80,000 circles in 183 countries, growing faster than ever before. "Girls in high school are twice as likely as boys to think that having any leadership role will make them be called 'bossy.' "We really want girls to embrace and lean into their superpowers. We want girls to know that they're going to face stereotypes that there's going to be headwinds.

Editor’s Note: Phyllis L. Fagell, a licensed clinical professional counselor and professional school counselor, is the author of “Middle School Matters.” Her new book is “Middle School Superpowers: Raising Resilient Tweens in Turbulent Times.”CNN —After a disappointing routine during a gymnastics meet, Addy Moser was full of self-doubt, so the 13-year-old tried silently encouraging herself using her own first name. It’s not easy for middle schoolers to counteract unrealistic expectations they absorb from peers, family members, the culture and themselves, which is why I devote a chapter in my new book, “Middle School Superpowers: Raising Resilient Tweens in Turbulent Times,” to acquiring “super security,” the power to develop a healthy self-identity. The good news is you can help your child acquire super security. Beyond offering unconditional love, which every child needs to feel secure, parents can do practical things to shore up a tween’s self-image. Parents can encourage children who use social media to be mindful about the posts they see and share.

But she did not flourish there and left at 16. (Ms. Jackson remained convinced that she was plain, even ugly — a belief later reinforced by the academy’s principal, who told her that she could become only a character actress and “shouldn’t expect to work much before you’re 40.”)The schooling prepared her for what became six years in provincial repertory. In 1958 she married Roy Hodges, a fellow actor. Regional stage work meant periods of unemployment, odd jobs and poverty for the couple, and Ms. Jackson later admitted that she had shoplifted food and other essentials that she could conceal under her coat. Her big break came in 1964, when the director Mr. Brook brought her into an experimental group he was assembling for the recently formed Royal Shakespeare Company.

CNN —She’s one of the most celebrated actors of her generation, but Cate Blanchett wants to branch out even more into other filmmaking pursuits. “I’m always trying to get out of acting,” she said at the Cannes Film Festival this week during a conversation with Variety’s Chief Correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister. “I’ve been trying to stop acting my entire professional life.”The two-time Oscar-winner was at the ritzy French cinema fest to present her new film, “The New Boy,” which premiered on Friday, a film she stars in and also produced. Blanchett also mentioned how on her 2020 FX miniseries “Mrs. “I realize that I’m the only woman in the cast…there are 62 men, and yep, I’m the only woman.
Justice is a longtime entertainment lawyer and spent decades representing an array of clients ranging from male and female executives to talent like rapper Jay-Z. When she expressed how much her female clients were looking to get paid, she says, "I got ridiculous pushback." Here are some of the excuses she heard most often for why her women clients didn't get offered what their male peers did. It was assumed, by contrast, that single men would one day need to support their families. When Justice asked for a salary comparable to the client's male counterparts, the in-house counsel she was negotiating opposite "laughed at me," she says.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—Johnathan Bragg has always looked at his job selling home-repair insurance the same way an artist looks at a canvas. “I got this road map in my head of what it looks like when you’re delivering world-class customer service—what triggers people, what makes people trust you,” Mr. Bragg said. “It’s like when da Vinci was painting.”
The Bosses Are Back in Charge

America’s bosses are starting to feel bossy again. Many executives say that they are no longer scrambling to retain workers, after several years of doing whatever it took to keep people on staff. Pay increases are slowing. For some jobs, hiring is getting easier. Executives are seizing on this moment to streamline operations or cut projects, shedding staff that until recently they couldn’t afford to lose.

[1/4] U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and South Africa's Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana attend bilateral talks, at the treasury offices in Pretoria, South Africa, January 26, 2023. Nevertheless Lavrov made a stopover after visiting South Africa, which his counterpart Thulisile Dladla described as a "profound honour." Eswatini relies on the United States for aid, but its absolute monarchy has suffered U.S. criticism on human rights. South Africa, alongside Russia and China, is pushing for a "multipolar" world in which geopolitical power is less concentrated around the United States. "It hasn't delivered the kind of benefits South Africa was hoping to get."
The most successful communicators get to the point and avoid these phrases that only serve to irritate the listener:1. What to say instead: Legitimate criticism is necessary and even helpful, as long as you're not a jerk about it. Your audience may have no idea that you're upset, much less why you're upset. What to say instead: Examine why you're upset. What to say instead: Be upfront.
