Six startup founders interviewed by Insider also say that in some cases, they're actively turning down opportunities for funding to keep maximum control of their business plans.
Founders who have eschewed VC funding say that bootstrapping allows them to go — and grow — at their own pace.
To be sure, some startup founders are still taking big checks from VCs when the timing is right.
