At the edge of Serengeti National Park sits TAASA, a luxury safari lodge. The lodge sits near three ecosystems: the Serengeti National Park, the Maasai Mara National Reserve, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. A pair of zebras and a lion in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. In Serengeti National Park, night game drives aren't permitted. I whispered the words to myself on game drives and woke up to the lyrics in my mind some mornings.

CNN has reached out to Terada for comment on the R-FBI’s role in Russian disinformation efforts, and ties to the state. Storm-1516 and R-FBI network members have spread at least 54 different disinformation narratives online since August 2023, according to Clemson and CNN’s analysis. “Does anyone believe that an American would be the spearhead of what some call the biggest Russian Disinformation operation since the cold war? TelegramAnother prominent figure in propagating Russian disinformation is American Tara Reade, a former Senate staffer who in 2020 accused then-presidential candidate Joe Biden of sexual harassment. The links between Terada’s group and other Russian disinformation efforts are at best opaque, which is likely no accident.

Black rhino: Back from the brink

Sporting two impressive horns, the black rhino, which weighs up to 1,350 kilograms (3,000 pounds), isn’t really black at all. Much like the “white” rhino, it’s a muddy-gray color. Consistent hunting and land clearance throughout the early and mid 20th century reduced the black rhino population to an estimated 100,000 by 1960. A ban on black rhino trade, the expansion and stricter protection of their home ranges, and relocation programs involving unusual methods, have resulted in a remarkable recovery. According to the IUCN, 6,421 black rhinos were recorded across the continent in 2024.

LOISABA CONSERVANCY, Kenya (AP) — Conservationists in Kenya are celebrating as rhinos were returned to a grassy plateau that hasn't seen them in decades. The rhinos were taken from three parks that are becoming overcrowded to the private Loisaba Conservancy, where herds were wiped out by poaching decades ago. Kenya now has around 1,000 black rhinos, the third biggest population behind South Africa and Namibia. There are just over 6,400 wild black rhinos left in the world, all of them in Africa, according to the Save the Rhino organization. Tom Silvester, the CEO of Loisaba Conservancy, said Kenya's plan is to get its black rhino numbers to 2,000 over the next decade.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A rhinoceros is pregnant through embryo transfer in the first successful use of a method that conservationists said might later make it possible to save the nearly extinct northern white rhino subspecies. “The successful embryo transfer and pregnancy are a proof of concept and allow (researchers) to now safely move to the transfer of northern white rhino embryos — a cornerstone in the mission to save the northern white rhino from extinction,” the group said in a statement. An hour-and-a-half flight from Johannesburg, in northwest South Africa, sits the country’s largest private nature reserve. It’s a remote 441-square-mile tract of the Kalahari, where red soil rolls for miles into shrubland, savanna and low, rounded mountains that carve into the powder-blue sky. Despite the unforgiving landscape, this area has been the subject of an intensive restoration process for nearly three decades. What it lacks in abundance, it makes up for in rare wildlife, such as meerkats and pangolins. And endangered and threatened species are slowly starting to thrive—the desert black rhino and white rhino populations have quadrupled here since the animals were reintroduced 15 years ago.

Rhinos that have been stripped of their main armament, their horn, seem to feel more vulnerable, Ms. Duthé said. This vulnerability is exhibited through their diminished appetite for exploring and for engaging in conflict with other rhinos. They blindfold the animal and insert earplugs, then use a chain saw to cut off the top of its horn, but only the section that does not contain nerves. Like fingernails, rhino horns grow back with time and animals are usually dehorned once every 18 months. Despite the prevalence of this practice, researchers did not know until now what effects, if any, dehorning had on rhino behavior and survival.

He’s a conservation officer and pilot for Tsavo Trust, an organization dedicated to protecting the wildlife in the Tsavo Conservation Area (TCA) – in particular, the Super Tuskers. “The Tsavo ecosystem holds arguably the largest number of big tuskers in Africa,” says Kyalo. The magnificent "Super Tuskers" of Tsavo National Park are an increasingly rare sight. “There are approximately 25 individuals left in the world, most of which reside in the Tsavo Conservation Area. “A future where there are no ‘Big Tuskers’ in Tsavo is not worth thinking about,” Kyalo says.

AI tools can help with efforts like identifying tracks to better understand animal populations. Using AI can help conservationists more wisely deploy scarce resources. So Jewell, a cofounder of the US nonprofit WildTrack, turned to artificial intelligence to help identify animal tracks using photos. Yet the AI system Jewell and her collaborators developed can so far identify dozens of animal species with more than 90% accuracy. "The things that limit AI can be augmented with that human input," Jewell said, "the AI can definitely learn from the skills of the trackers."
