When the Covid-19 pandemic forced the closure of most U.S. schools last spring, students were thrown into new and unfamiliar ways of learning. Special education students and children learning English lost support that their schools struggled to provide online. Her math scores, slightly below the national average, hadn’t budged since last winter. He expected to see some lower-than-usual scores when his third grade math students took the MAP assessment this year, but he didn’t expect to see that so many of them were half a grade level behind. The exam can affect whether poor-performing students advance to the next grade, and scores are used to evaluate teachers and grade schools.

The 1993 race was a rematch of their 1989 contest, when Mr. Dinkins beat Mr. Giuliani by less than 50,000 votes out of nearly two million cast. In the rematch, Mr. Giuliani won by about 53,000. Second, Mr. Giuliani benefited from a Staten Island secession referendum that Republicans had led the way to getting on the ballot. It goosed turnout in that borough, which benefited Mr. Giuliani (Republicans knew how to put a finger on the electoral scale even then). For decades before him, New York City politics had been dominated by “the three I’s”: Italy, Ireland and Israel.

Amazon said Tuesday that this year's holiday shopping season has been the biggest in its history, as the coronavirus pandemic forced more people than ever to do their shopping online. Amazon didn't disclose actual sales figures for Black Friday or Cyber Monday, which are typically the company's two busiest days in the holiday shopping period. It added that 71,000 small and medium-sized businesses have seen sales above $100,000 in this holiday season so far. Like many other retailers, Amazon began offering holiday deals earlier than ever this year. Prime Day, which was pushed back from mid-July to October, became the unofficial kickoff to the holiday shopping season.

Christopher Black/WHO/Handout via REUTERSNEW YORK (Reuters) - The 2020 prize for Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year went to an obvious choice: pandemic. The term had the most online dictionary lookups of any word, Merriam-Webster said on its website, after a year in which at least 1.4 million people globally have died from the COVID-19 pandemic. “Sometimes a single word defines an era, and it’s fitting that in this exceptional - and exceptionally difficult - year, a single word came immediately to the fore,” the dictionary publisher said. Dictionary lookups skyrocketed on March 11 when the World Health Organization officially labeled COVID-19 a pandemic.

The burial service for a Florida teen fatally shot by a Brevard County sheriff’s deputy earlier this month was interrupted by gunfire that injured the teen’s mother. Quasheda Pierce, 39, was hit in the leg Saturday by a single gunshot from the “accidental discharge” of a concealed weapon, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. The incident happened during the service for her son, Sincere Pierce, 18, one of the two Black teens fatally shot by a Brevard County deputy during a Nov. 13 attempted traffic stop. “Initial reports were that a male and female received non-life threatening injuries when shot during a funeral service,” said Brevard County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Tod Goodyear in a statement to NBC News. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — They threw her new cellphone on the roof of the station house and placed nails under the wheels of her pickup truck. Other Black firefighters who endured similar treatment in the Winston-Salem Fire Department recently brought their complaints before the city. The grievance they filed in October calls for Chief William “Trey” Mayo to be fired for failing to discipline white firefighters who, the group said, have created a hostile work environment through comments in person and on social media. Across the country, firefighters are confronting incidents of racism and discrimination as part of a burgeoning movement to call out and address racial injustice in America. (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc said on Tuesday independent businesses selling on its platform crossed $4.8 billion in worldwide sales from Black Friday through Cyber Monday, an increase of more than 60% from a year earlier. In its first indication of performance for the year's peak online shopping days, Amazon said more than 71,000 small- and medium-sized businesses worldwide had surpassed $100,000 in sales this holiday season to date. The robust performance comes despite nearly two months of offers since Amazon held its Prime Day sales event in October, with retailers seeking to recoup business lost during this year’s coronavirus-driven closures of malls and stores. Estimates from Adobe Analytics showed this year’s conclusion to Thanksgiving weekend sales would come in between $10.8 billion and $11.4 billion. While that was down from an earlier estimate of as much as $12.7 billion, it still easily surpasses this year’s Black Friday figure of $9 billion, the strongest online sales result for the day ever, as well as last year’s Cyber Monday total of $9.4 billion.

PARIS (Reuters) - Four French police officers held in custody over the beating of a Black music producer have been placed under formal investigation, Agence France Presse (AFP) and France Info said on Monday. Two officers would stay in custody, while the other two were placed under judicial control, the news providers added. Charges against the officers would include the use of racist language and intentional violence with weapons, Paris prosecutor Remy Heitz had said on Sunday. The alleged victim, music producer Michel Zecler, said police jumped on him at his music studio in Paris’ 17th arrondissement on Nov. 21. However, the police followed him inside and started to physically attack him and racially abuse him, he added.

Moderna is the second drugmaker to seek emergency use from the FDA after Pfizer, another front-runner in the Covid-19 vaccine race, applied for the same authorization on Nov. 20. The company said 185 cases of Covid were observed in the placebo group versus 11 cases observed in the group that received its vaccine. Of the 30 severe cases of Covid-19 in the trial, none were in the group that received the vaccine, Moderna said. The FDA's review of Moderna's vaccine is expected to take a few weeks. Holiday shopping doesn't need to break the bank. More shoppers are expected to choose online shopping this holiday season amid the Covid-19 pandemic. But other dangers lurk online, and most shoppers are not aware that they could be putting their personal financial data at risk. Separate research from Bankrate recently found that 91% of adults have put their personal financial information at risk while shopping online. The most common mistake: reusing online passwords, which was cited by 80% of Bankrate survey respondents.
