But most people were slow to realize that this new kind of chatbot often makes things up. When Google introduced a similar chatbot several weeks later, it spewed nonsense about the James Webb telescope. The next day, Microsoft’s new Bing chatbot offered up all sorts of bogus information about the Gap, Mexican nightlife and the singer Billie Eilish. Now a new start-up called Vectara, founded by former Google employees, is trying to figure out how often chatbots veer from the truth. The company’s research estimates that even in situations designed to prevent it from happening, chatbots invent information at least 3 percent of the time — and as high as 27 percent.

The technology’s reliance on statistical pattern prediction also means that most chatbots join words and phrases that they recognize from training data as often being correlated. “What allows it to appear so intelligent is that it can make connections that aren’t explicitly written down,” she said. Similarly, OpenAI said users could inform the company when ChatGPT responded inaccurately. OpenAI trainers can then vet the critique and use it to fine-tune the model to recognize certain responses to specific prompts as better than others. Meta said its open-source release allowed a broad community of users to help identify and fix its vulnerabilities.

Microsoft shares climbed to a record Thursday after analysts at JPMorgan Chase touted the software maker's growth prospects in artificial intelligence. AI has been a hot topic all year, after Microsoft-backed OpenAI in November released the ChatGPT chatbot, which quickly went viral. In the past four quarters, Microsoft has generated almost $208 billion in total revenue. Negative sentiment around cloud growth and a contracting PC market led to pessimism on Wall Street last year. But the excitement around AI in addition to the cost-cutting measures that tech companies implemented produced a renewed bullishness.

Microsoft's Bing chatbot told users it loved them and wanted to be a human when it was released. OpenAI warned the company that its GPT-4 model could give bizarre responses, per the WSJ. Well, The Wall Street Journal reports that Microsoft previously warned OpenAI to move slower on Bing's release because it hadn't yet ironed out all these issues. After several users reported worrying interactions with Bing, Microsoft imposed limits to exchanges that contained user questions and Bing replies. "Very long chat sessions can confuse the underlying chat model," Microsoft said.

Nvidia GPUs are essential for training the big models behind ChatGPT and other generative AI tools. That gives big tech companies an advantage over smaller startups. Nvidia GPUs are the water that feeds today's flourishing AI ecosystem. This is giving Big Tech companies another huge advantage over smaller upstarts. Many startups can't afford that, or they just can't get hold of the chips.

Microsoft is testing ads in the Bing AI chatbot, which began rolling out to users in February, by relocating some traditional search ads and inserting them into the AI responses, the company said. In a May interview, Google’s general manager of ads, Jerry Dischler, said the tech company would also use existing search ads to experiment with ad placements within the AI search snapshots, an early-test feature called Search Generative Experience that first became available last month. Microsoft and Google said existing guard rails on their search engines, including lists of blocked keywords to prevent ads from appearing on those queries, would also apply to their AI search features. Three ad buyers said they were concerned about Microsoft’s lack of transparency reporting, or reports that can show what search terms triggered a brand’s ads to appear in generative AI experiences, or how the ads performed versus traditional search ads.

Microsoft said Tuesday that it will offer Bing as the default search engine in OpenAI's viral ChatGPT chatbot. "ChatGPT will now have a world-class search engine built-in to provide timelier and more up-to-date answers with access from the web," Mehdi wrote. "Now, ChatGPT answers can be grounded by search and web data and include citations so you can learn more — all directly from within chat." Microsoft is trying to expand the use of Bing, which has for years struggled to gain market share from Google. Microsoft said developers will be able to build plugins that work in ChatGPT, Bing and its Copilot chatbot coming to Microsoft 365 apps such as Word and Excel.
OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT App for the iPhone
  + stars: | 2023-05-18 | by ( Cade Metz | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In offering its flagship technology to billions of iPhone users, OpenAI is solidifying its position among the giants of the tech industry. ChatGPT is the most prominent example of what is called generative A.I., technology that can generate text, images and other media based on short prompts. Google, Microsoft and various start-ups have released similar bots and have begun to roll such technology into a wide range of online services. The result of more than a decade of research at companies like Google and OpenAI, these chatbots are poised to remake everything from internet search engines like Google Search and Bing to email programs like Gmail and Outlook. OpenAI is not the first to introduce technology that lets people use ChatGPT with voice; some small companies and independent developers have already done so.
There's a "prompt-library" channel on OpenAI's Discord server, where users are sharing tips. They're crafting GPT prompts to help elicit better responses to queries, or create writing and code. (There are sample prompts that help users get ChatGPT's help to prepare for interviews, for instance.) Other prompts help with learning new skills, like a language. Others seem to be for perhaps less above-board uses, like how to get advanced versions of OpenAI's advanced tools to produce content that could outsmart AI-detectors.
Mass event will let hackers test limits of A.I. technology

But now its maker, OpenAI, and other major AI providers such as Google and Microsoft, are coordinating with the Biden administration to let thousands of hackers take a shot at testing the limits of their technology. Some are official "red teams" authorized by the companies to "prompt attack" the AI models to discover their vulnerabilities. Chowdhury, now the co-founder of AI accountability nonprofit Humane Intelligence, said it's not just about finding flaws but about figuring out ways to fix them. Building the platform for the testing is another startup called Scale AI, known for its work in assigning humans to help train AI models by labeling data. "Our basic view is that AI systems will need third-party assessments, both before deployment and after deployment.
AMD shares reached a session high on Thursday following a media report claiming the chipmaker was working with Microsoft on a new artificial-intelligence processor. Microsoft's top competitors in the cloud infrastructure market, Amazon and Alphabet , both have their own specialized chips that software developers can use to train models. Like other large technology companies, Microsoft relies on Nvidia graphics processing units to run AI models. AMD is already a chip supplier to Microsoft, as well as other cloud providers, such as Google and Oracle . Read the full Bloomberg report here.
Microsoft said Thursday that it's dispensing with the waiting list it has had in place for the past three months for its revamped Bing search engine, allowing anyone with a Microsoft account to use it. Kumar said the company will provide more details on how developers can build for the Bing chatbot at its Microsoft Build developer conference, which starts on May 23. That means Google has yet to allow people to use the Bing chatbot from Google's dominant Chrome browser. Microsoft includes Edge in its Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems, and the default search engine in Edge is Bing. may ruin Alphabet's only real business: Google Search, says CIC Wealth's Malcolm Ethridge
When A.I. Chatbots Hallucinate
  + stars: | 2023-05-01 | by ( Karen Weise | Cade Metz | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Chatbots like ChatGPT are used by hundreds of millions of people for an increasingly wide array of tasks, including email services, online tutors and search engines. But there is no way of ensuring that these systems produce information that is accurate. The technology, called generative A.I., relies on a complex algorithm that analyzes the way humans put words together on the internet. The tech industry often refers to the inaccuracies as “hallucinations.” But to some researchers, “hallucinations” is too much of a euphemism. Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing chatbots both repeatedly provided inaccurate answers to the same question.
Altman made the remarks during a Thursday video appearance at an MIT event that discussed business and AI. OpenAI makes ChatGPT, an AI bot that can create human-like responses to questions asked by a user. GPT technology underpins Microsoft 's Bing AI chatbot, and prompted a flurry of AI investment. Earlier this year, Altman acknowledged that AI technology made him a "little bit scared." Questions about safe and ethical AI use have come up at the White House, on Capitol Hill, and in boardrooms across America.
Through its Bedrock generative AI service, Amazon Web Services will offer access to its own first-party language models called Titan, as well as language models from startups AI21 and Google-backed Anthropic, and a model for turning text into images from startup Stability AI. Generally speaking, large language models are AI programs trained with extensive amounts of data that can compose human-like text in response to prompts that people type in. Amazon is "really concerned about" accuracy and ensuring its Titan models produce high-quality responses, Bratin Saha, an AWS vice president, told CNBC in an interview. Clients will be able to customize Titan models with their own data. He said Amazon wants to ensure Bedrock will be easy to use and cost-effective, thanks to the use of custom AI processors.
Microsoft's cumulative investment in OpenAI has reportedly swelled to $13 billion and the startup's valuation has hit roughly $29 billion. What does that mean for Microsoft's investment and broader arrangement? The structure changed in 2019, when two top executives published a blog post announcing the formation of a "capped-profit" entity called OpenAI LP. Microsoft has an exclusive license on GPT-4 and all other OpenAI models, the OpenAI spokesperson said. When considering potential exits for OpenAI, Microsoft — which does not hold an OpenAI board seat — would be the natural acquirer given its close entanglement.
OpenAI's ChatGPT made up sexual harassment accusations against lawyer Jonathan Turley, WaPo reported. In its response, ChatGPT apparently cited a Washington Post article published in 2018 — but the publication said that article doesn't exist. In the post, Turley added that he initially thought the accusation was "comical," but that "after some reflection," it "took on a more menacing meaning." He said the false sexual harassment accusations could damage his reputation as a legal scholar. "As part of that reality in our age of rage, there is a continual stream of false claims about my history or statements."
Google debuted its AI chatbot Bard this week with a nod to the unpredictability of AI chatbot responses. Bard works like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's Bing chatbot, but can give multiple responses to a prompt. Google had also moved to reassure users this week that Bard "is not trained on Gmail data," according to a tweet. Here's how it worksGoogle's new Bard chatbot told an AI expert it was trained using Gmail data. Google asked staff to spend time teaching its Bard chatbot to write like a human.
Google Made the Bard AI Chatbot Boring. On Purpose.

If ChatGPT is your crazy Uncle Leo, Google’s Bard is your goodie-two-shoes Aunt Martha. On Tuesday, Alphabet Inc.’s Google released its artificial-intelligence chatbot contender, an answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft Corp.’s Bing chatbot, which uses OpenAI technology. As with those others, you type a prompt into Bard and out pops prose that’s likely better than your last texting convo. It can answer questions, draft emails and tell you a bedtime story. Yes, it can even write a newspaper column.
Google just dropped Bard on Tuesday, and the AI bot is already game to even take on the tech giant. "12:11"As we've said, Bard can sometimes give inaccurate or inappropriate information that doesn't represent Google's views and Bard should not respond in a way that endorses a particular viewpoint on subjective topics," the statement said. Insider repeated Wong's question in our own test of Bard, and received similar responses — Bard offers different answers to the same question, called "drafts," as Insider previously reported. In multiple versions of its responses, Bard repeated that "I would side with the Justice Department in this case." AI chatbots can sometimes deliver factually incorrect information, experts including OpenAI's own chief technology officer Mira Murati have said.
BEIJING/SHANGHAI, March 17 (Reuters) - Hong Kong-listed shares in China's Baidu (9888.HK), rebounded 15.7% on Friday as users told of their experiences with the Ernie bot, recouping losses from a day earlier prompted by the chatbot's launch, which failed to impress. One user described on the Weibo social media platform how Ernie had answered a question about the status of Hong Kong philosopher Zhang Jinqing accurately. Analysts also said the initial disappointment the market felt from the launch was tempered by the realisation that the Chinese search engine giant was still best placed to build China's strongest rival to ChatGPT. More than 75,000 corporate users have applied for a trial of an Ernie API developed by Baidu Cloud, the Chinese company said in a video published on its official WeChat account on Friday.
