Clark ended Thursday with 3,569 career points and could set the all-time scoring record in men’s and women’s NCAA basketball history before the season’s end. The late Pete Maravich, who played at Louisiana State for three seasons from 1967 to 1970, holds that record – 3,667 points. Her 49 points Thursday also was a one-game best for her in college, and a one-game best for any University of Iowa women’s basketball player. Before Thursday’s game, at Iowa’s weekly news conference, Clark was asked if she ever thought she could be in a position to surpass the career scoring record. I think that’s been one of the coolest parts.”This season, Clark and Iowa are looking to end the season on a high by claiming a first ever women’s basketball national championship.

A National Labor Relations Board regional official has decided that Dartmouth basketball players are employees of the school, clearing the way for an election that would create the first-ever labor union for NCAA athletes. “Because Dartmouth has the right to control the work performed by the Dartmouth men’s basketball team, and the players perform that work in exchange for compensation, I find that the petitioned-for basketball players are employees within the meaning of the (National Labor Relations) Act,” NLRB Regional Director Laura Sacks ruled. “At Dartmouth, students’ primary objective is learning,” school attorney Joe McConnell said then. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh agreed to accept the three-game suspension issued by the Big Ten Conference over sign-stealing allegations against the Wolverines football program, a stunning twist less than a day before the sides were set to appear in court over the ban. The agreement resolves a legal war that erupted last week when the Big Ten levied the unusual mid-season penalty against Harbaugh, whose team is undefeated and chasing a national title even as it fended off accusations of cheating.

PHOENIX (AP) — Even NBA star LeBron James is relishing the chance to tease Michigan over its college football sign-stealing scandal. The 19-time All-Star took a light-hearted swipe at the Wolverines and coach Jim Harbaugh in the aftermath of the Los Angeles Lakers' win over the Phoenix Suns on Friday night. James grew up in Ohio, home to Michigan's biggest rival: Ohio State. He said the Lakers were able to decipher some of Suns coach Frank Vogel’s signals on the sideline because the team is familiar with him. The second-ranked Wolverines (9-0) have a shot to win a third straight Big Ten title and the school’s first national championship since 1997.

The Big Ten Conference on Friday barred Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh from coaching the remainder of the team’s regular season games, an unprecedented sanction that follows allegations against the Wolverines football program of illegally attending future opponents’ games to steal play-signals. The conference announced the penalty as Michigan’s team was flying to State College, Pa., to play a top-10 matchup against Penn State on Saturday. The stakes could scarcely be higher: Harbaugh is coach of one of the nation’s top teams as it enters the season’s critical final stretch.

CNN —University of Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh was suspended for the three remaining games of the 2023 regular season after the Big Ten Conference announced on Friday the Wolverines football program was found to have conducted “an impermissible, in-person scouting operation over multiple years,” thus violating the Big Ten sportsmanship policy. “I want to thank coach Harbaugh,” Moore told the Fox broadcast with tears streaming down his face. The Big Ten Conference said Jim Harbaugh's suspension from coaching on game days was "not a sanction" of the coach. “This is not a sanction of Coach Harbaugh,” it read. “You may have removed him from our sidelines today, but Jim Harbaugh is our head football coach.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because Michigan is not discussing its strategy publicly, and did not provide details of its potential next moves. Michigan and the Big Ten have both confirmed the school was notified of potential discipline from the conference. The NCAA is investigating Michigan, too, but its process is slower and is likely to stretch well past the season. Former Michigan star and Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard said in an email response to AP such a situation wouldn't happen in the Southeastern Conference. The University of Michigan moved to ward off possible discipline by the Big Ten Conference against the Wolverines’ football program and head coach Jim Harbaugh in the wake of allegations that the team engaged in illegal sign-stealing. In an email to the Big Ten late last week, Michigan president Santa Ono warned that taking action before conducting an investigation would violate conference rules. The move escalates the battle between Michigan, a national-title contender ranked No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings, and its opponents, who are clamoring for a quick punishment of alleged activities they say have given the Wolverines a competitive advantage.

This week's initial College Football Playoff rankings, where Michigan was ranked third, stoked coaches’ outrage over the inaction. The call with coaches Wednesday was also regularly scheduled, but it was dominated by talk of the current allegations against Michigan. Michigan and the Big Ten have acknowledged the NCAA is investigating the Wolverines football program. The NCAA's inquiry into a sign-stealing scheme by Michigan's football program was triggered by an outside firm's investigation, which turned up videos of and documented plans and budgets for impermissible scouting of the Wolverines' opponents. A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Associated Press that an outside firm provided the NCAA with evidence, including photographs, videos and documents, that initiated the association's investigation. The NCAA informed the Big Ten Conference, which then notified Michigan's future opponents. Many student athletes rarely have the chance to step foot in a classroom, attending their classes online and taking proctored exams in hotel ballrooms near the next game site. Say the Big Ten required its TV partners to share 30 percent of its revenues with its student athletes,. The N.C.A.A.’s rules on revenue sharing are driven by their members; this change will not come from the N.C.A.A.’s home base of Indianapolis, but from leaders at member institutions speaking frankly about the challenges to come. It must also take into account the input of student athletes, who are too often shut out of decisions that directly affect them. Make no mistake, the courts are judging the Big Ten Conference, and the other major N.C.A.A.’ conferences, on their behavior.
