AdvertisementFor the leading voices in the uncommitted movement, that's missing the point — and it's insulting. The "Listen to Michigan" campaign was originally conceived in a memo drafted by Waleed Shahid, a progressive strategist and former spokesman for the left-wing group Justice Democrats. "There is an entire menu of things that President Biden could do to move in the direction of discontinuing the funding of the killing," he said. What uncommitted voters are ultimately looking for is a sense of seriousness and clarity that they feel has been lacking from Biden. Uncommitted movement organizers do not seem to be taking glee in embarrassing Biden.

Republicans are rallying around IVF access after a controversial Alabama Supreme Court ruling. The issue has been further fueled by a House bill to recognize human life at fertilization. Democratic candidate Elissa Slotkin, who is running against Rogers for Senate, pointed out that Rogers has co-sponsored four bills with similar language to the House bill while in Congress. President Joe Biden's campaign and Vice President Kamala Harris have also lobbed criticism regarding the Alabama Supreme Court decision, specifically calling out Trump. What’s happening in Alabama is a direct result of Donald Trump’s Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

Biden made it clear he respected the role of a free press in a democracy and did not berate reporters in White House press conferences, nor did his administration suspend journalists’ credentials, as his predecessor’s did. But as the press has focused recently on Biden's age and memory, the president and his campaign team have become more confrontational. When Doocey asked how "bad" Biden's memory was, the president said, "My memory is so bad I let you speak." Kristi Noem on the air, "seconds after trying to criticize President Biden’s memory." But the pushback may not work the way the White House hopes.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) — Bidding to salvage a border deal in Congress that also would unlock money for Ukraine, President Joe Biden offered fresh assurances Saturday night that he would be willing to close the U.S.-Mexico border if lawmakers would only send him a bill to sign. Biden — also eager to disarm GOP criticism of his handling of migration at the border — said at a political event in South Carolina that he would shut down the border ’“right now” if Congress passed the proposed deal. “It’ll also give me as president, the emergency authority to shut down the border until it could get back under control. If that bill were the law today, I’d shut down the border right now and fix it quickly.”The deal being negotiated in Congress would require the U.S. to shutter the border if roughly 5,000 migrants cross illegally on any given day. WASHINGTON (AP) — Prosecutors pushed back Monday against Hunter Biden's move to subpoena documents from Donald Trump and former Justice Department officials in the firearms case filed against the president's son. They argued that Hunter Biden doesn't have enough evidence to support his claims of potential political interference in the criminal investigation against him and urged a judge to reject the subpoena requests. The investigation into Hunter Biden’s taxes and a gun purchase began in 2018, while Trump, a Republican, was still president. The charges against Hunter Biden allege he broke laws against drug users having guns in 2018. No new tax charges have yet been filed, but the special counsel overseeing the case has indicated they are possible in California, where Hunter Biden lives.

For an incumbent president, primary races -- the state-by-state competitions that nominate a political party's official presidential candidate -- are normally a perfunctory affair. Pro-Biden Democrats' volunteer-focused effort, with just a $100,000 budget, will encourage primary voters to put Biden's name on the New Hampshire ballot. Lyndon B. Johnson, then the Democratic incumbent, shunned the New Hampshire primary in 1968 due to over-confidence, only to see an insurgent campaign from Minnesota, U.S. Biden write-in organizers have largely settled on asking voters to write in "Joe Biden," but believe that other names like "President Biden" and "President Biden and Vice President Harris" satisfy a state law that says to count the vote if the reasonable intent of the voter is clear. "They're gonna use this as a way to say, look, we are good Democrats and organized this to protect President Biden," Smith said.

These two points blunted anything that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell had to say and that was all it took to have the best week in the stock market of the year. He's the union president, which contributes to investor ennui given how unions have produced minus signs in the stock market wherever they prey. But yields looked to break out the wrong way for the stock market for certain. We didn't realize that yields could be peaking: 6% was beckoning on the long end of the bond market yield curve. And as if to punctuate the tragedy and horror of the conflict, an explosion rocked a hospital in Gaza, causing hundreds of civilian casualties. "There is a significant U.S. interest here, showing strong support for Israel," which Biden did immediately after the attack and subsequently, she says. Hamas is based in Gaza, where civilian Palestinians have fought the Israeli government – Netanyahu especially – for civil and human rights. But while there are indeed Palestinians who support Hamas, not all do – and half of Gaza residents are children who are vulnerable as Israel seeks to erase Hamas forever. Biden and Netanyahu have had a chilly relationship going back to the Iran nuclear deal negotiated when Biden was vice president and which Netanyahu opposed.

Kamala Harris spoke about her role as Vice President in a new interview. She says one key role for her is making sure that Biden doesn't get "sugarcoated" information. That was the assessment that Ron Klain, the former White House Chief of Staff, gave to POLITICO as the outlet interviewed Harris about her role as vice president. Harris, he said, makes sure there's "no one spreading bullshit in the Oval Office." Asking about Klain's comments by POLITICO, Harris concurred, albeit in softer language, saying she ensures President Joe Biden gets information that's "not sugarcoated and not filtered and not through some policy wonk-speak."

The Biden administration is trying to crack down on hidden apartment rental fees. As part of the initiative, major rental platforms will show the total cost of units, not just the rent. As part of the Biden administration's ongoing initiative to crack down on junk fees, the White House has a new target: Rental fees. On Wednesday, the Biden administration announced a slew of new measures to help ensure that renters aren't burdened with surprise fees while trying to find a new place, or after they move in. Now, prospective renters will be able to see the total cost of an apartment when they peruse three major platforms — Zillow, Apartments.com, and AffordableHousing.com.

Biden is set to meet with top lawmakers on Tuesday to discuss a potential debt ceiling agreement. McCarthy passed a bill in the House that would raise the debt ceiling through March of next year, and it was accompanied by over $4.5 trillion in spending cuts. Even so, some progressive lawmakers have warned the president that he should not bend on Democratic priorities to raise the debt ceiling. Multiple reports have suggested that the White House was considering compromising on rescinding unspent pandemic funding and energy permitting reform in a debt ceiling deal. Democrats – including President Biden – have been clear: these dangerous proposals are not going anywhere.
Trump suggested that Republicans risk the US and global economy if Biden doesn't give in to their demands. The former president said the GOP would "have to do a default" if more spending cuts don't accompany a debt limit increase. As soon as early next month, the Treasury Department will no longer be able to use special measures to delay breaching the debt ceiling. The debt ceiling does not authorize new spending, but lawmakers, especially conservatives, often tie an increase in the debt limit to spending cuts. The former president's comments are particularly striking as both parties traditionally try to avoid blame for a debt ceiling standoff.
The US could breach the debt ceiling and run out of money to pay its debts as soon as June 1. A White House official previously told Insider that Biden would stress that Congress "must take action to avoid default without conditions." Additionally, Wall Street's response to the debt-ceiling crisis is different this time around. Even so, he added, this debt-ceiling crisis "seems much more dangerous" than the ones from the Obama years. Biden has options to avoid a debt-ceiling crisis that don't involve CongressTuesday's meeting between Biden and congressional leadership aims to break through the logjam.
If the trend returns to the upside, it'll buck many of the gloomiest predictions of a crushing earnings recession and a painful stock market sell-off — at least for now. Last week, markets started showing early signs that investors are stressed about a possible US default as the deadline looms without an agreement in sight. Join us in demanding a reasonable negotiation, a responsible debt ceiling, an agreement that brings spending under control" McCarthy said. Here are the latest market moves. Here's why Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson doesn't believe in the latest stock market rally.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said a debt ceiling vote will come in weeks in Monday remarks. McCarthy said if Biden doesn't come to an agreement with the GOP, it could lead to the first default. Republicans want to attach spending cuts to a debt ceiling package, while Biden wants a clean raise. Independent analysis from Moody's shows congressional Republicans' budget cuts could throw 720,000 to over 2.5 million Americans out of work. "President Biden must hold firm on behalf of working families, and insist Republicans raise the debt limit swiftly and cleanly as they did time and time again under President Trump."
A federal judge ruled that 200,000 borrowers can move forward with relief in a borrower defense settlement. Last month, three schools mentioned in the settlement appealed the decision to the Supreme Court. 20 GOP-led states filed an amicus brief supporting the schools, arguing Biden doesn't have authority to carry out this relief. Unlawful delay of debt relief results in clear monetary harm." The Education Department has until Wednesday to file a response to the three schools' lawsuit, which currently sits with Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan.
After the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, President Joe Biden wants harsher penalties for executives at failed banks. On Friday, Biden released a statement calling on Congress to "impose tougher penalties for senior bank executives whose mismanagement contributed to their institutions failing." The banking industry has fallen under intense scrutiny over the past week after federal regulators shut down Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and crypto-friendly Signature Bank. Lawmakers — and now the president — want bank executives to be held accountable for actions that jeopardize taxpayer dollars. Warren, along with Sen. Richard Blumenthal, have also stressed the importance of holding bank executives accountable for failures.
A Democratic think tank has grown increasingly alarmed by an effort to field a third-party candidate in 2024. The "No Labels" effort is "going to hurt Biden and help Trump," Third Way's Jim Kessler told Insider. "I've been tracking what No Labels is doing, and at a certain point concluded, this is real and it's going to hurt Biden and help Trump," Kessler said. Of 23 states they say its will win, 19 of those states Biden won in 2020, he said. "But we know who they're going to nominate.
South Carolina will now kick things off for Democrats, with Michigan — and potentially Georgia — joining the early states in the biggest shakeup of the presidential primary in years, while Nevada will go second. "The Democratic Party looks like America," Harrison added, "And so does this proposal." Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart said the removal of Iowa will expose the party to charges that they have "turned their back on Iowa and rural America." New Hampshire Democrats have asked for more time to try to come up with a solution, but most Democrats say the writing on the wall and expect there will be no solution to the impasse. "Y'all, for far too long, our party's nominating calendar has not reflected this country looks like," said Georgia Rep. Nikema Williams, who is also the chairwoman of the state Democratic Party.
On Friday, 128 of the 222 House Republicans signed onto an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to block student-debt relief. They both argued that Biden doesn't have the authority to cancel student debt using the HEROES Act of 2003. On Friday, 128 House Republicans signed onto an amicus curiae brief urging the nation's highest court to block Biden's plan to forgive up to $20,000 in student debt for federal borrowers. That's just over half of the GOP composition in the House, with 222 Republicans holding a slim majority in that chamber. Both of the briefs argued that the HEROES Act does not allow for broad loan forgiveness, which a series of other conservative groups reiterated in their own briefs filed to the Supreme Court this week.
