NICE, France Associated Press —At least eight people died during a failed attempt to cross the English Channel from northern France, French maritime authorities said Sunday. At least 46 migrants had died while trying to cross to the UK this year, said Billant, the Pas-de-Calais prefect. At least 137,563 people have reached the United Kingdom after crossing the Channel from France since 2018, according to UK Home Office figures. Other surveillance and rescue operations are underway Sunday along the entire Pas-de-Calais coast amid stormy weather conditions and agitated sea, French maritime authorities said. Jane Garrett, who as an editor at the Alfred A. Knopf publishing house guided seven books to Pulitzer Prizes for history but watched another book lose its prestigious Bancroft Prize over scholars’ criticism of the author’s research, died on Oct. 12 at her home in Middlebury, Vt. She was 88. Ms. Garrett worked at Knopf for 44 years, initially as an editor and special assistant to Alfred Knopf himself, who had a strong devotion to publishing history books. At first she steered his projects to completion, but she soon began acquiring books on her own. In 1973, “People of Paradox: An Inquiry Concerning the History of American Civilization,” by Michael Kammen, became the first of the books edited by Ms. Garrett to win a Pulitzer. Ms. Garrett was at a book party in Boston when she met Alan Taylor, who was starting to work on a book about William Cooper, the founder of Cooperstown, N.Y., and the father of the novelist James Fenimore Cooper.

REUTERS/Dylan Martinez/LONDON, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Rapper Little Simz won the Mercury Prize for her fourth studio album "Sometimes I Might Be Introvert" on Tuesday, triumphing over contenders including Harry Styles and indie rock duo Wet Leg for the British music award. The 28-year-old, previously nominated in 2019 for album "Grey Area", was among favourites to scoop the award for her critically-acclaimed record. Like other nominees, Little Simz took to the stage at Tuesday's ceremony, originally due to be held last month but postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth. "Supernova" by rock duo Nova Twins, musician Self Esteem's "Prioritise Pleasure", singer-songwriter Sam Fender's chart-topping "Seventeen Going Under", Wet Leg's hit self-titled debut album and post-punk Yard Act's debut album "The Overload" completed the list.
