An Airbus Wingman air combat drone stands on display at the 2024 ILA Berlin Air Show on June 05, 2024 in Schoenefeld, Germany. Airbus this week revealed the concept for a new fighter-type drone, called Wingman, and showcased a model of it at Berlin's massive ILA Air Show. The drone would be an "unmanned escort for manned fighter jets," Airbus said in a statement, noting that it is designed to operate in a similar way to an actual wingman. In aviation, a wingman is a pilot in a secondary aircraft that supports and protects the primary one. The drone, which can be commanded by fighter jet pilots, can be deployed on riskier missions which could post a threat to manned aircraft.

President Biden is sounding tougher toward Israel these days and showing more compassion for people starving in Gaza. So we’re now in a bizarre situation: American bombs and American aid are both falling from Gaza’s skies. In 1948, the United States and its allies undertook the famous Berlin Airlift to rescue West Berlin from a Soviet blockade. Israel is insisting on painstaking inspections of every aid truck going into Gaza. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Jeff Merkley visited the Gaza border and found that Israel has blocked water purifiers.

PARIS, March 28 (Reuters) - German air taxi developer Lilium said on Tuesday it was in "active and constructive" discussions for new funding as it ramps up battery-cell production. But the challenge of securing certification and funding innovations such as batteries weigh heavily on the new sector. In November, Lilium raised $119 million from existing and new shareholders and partners such as Honeywell. Headed by former Airbus executive Klaus Roewe, Lilium is initially targeting contracts with large corporations and private individuals. Critics say the more radical design may be harder and take longer to certify than other eVTOL models.

BERLIN, March 11 (Reuters) - Germany's Verdi trade union has called for a strike of security personnel at Berlin's airport on March 13 to start in the early hours of the morning, which it said would likely cause longer queues for passengers or flight cancellations. The services sector trade union said it was calling for the strike due to disputes over remuneration for working at night, weekends and on bank holidays that had been going on for years. "Verdi calls for appropriate pay for flight security personnel who are working at unfavorable times," it said in a statement. REUTERS/Fabrizio BenschMUNICH, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Slow German government export approvals are holding up Airbus Defence & Space (AIR.PA) defence exports worth several billions of euros, the company's chief executive said on Sunday, urging Berlin to speed up the process. Unfortunately we are having difficulties to get the German export licences on time," Michael Schoellhorn told Reuters in an interview at the Munich Security Conference. "Our problem is that we haven't received any contracts yet from the Zeitenwende and important exports are not being approved. Asked whether in future space developments Europe will have to fall back on Elon Musk's SpaceX company following Airbus Defence & Space's loss of two satellites on a Vega C rocket, Schoellhorn said any such solution would be temporary.
German trade union Verdi on Wednesday called on workers at Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Dortmund, Hanover and Bremen airports to go on a 24-hour strike, saying collective bargaining efforts had made little progress. "On Friday, February 17, 2023, there will therefore be massive disruptions to air traffic," said Fraport (FRAG.DE), the operator of Frankfurt airport, which counted more than 48 million passengers in 2022. The walkout also coincides with the start of the 59th Munich Security Conference (MSC), which brings hundreds of delegates to the Bavarian capital, including several global leaders. The issue would be discussed with the airport on Thursday, the Verdi spokesperson added. The union is currently in negotiations for three groups of workers: ground service staff, public sector officials and aviation security workers.

BERLIN, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Meinhard von Gerkan, one of Germany's most famous architects who designed Berlin's Tegel Airport and the capital's main railway station, has died at age 87, his office said on Thursday. A year after graduating from his architecture studies in 1964, von Gerkan founded a partnership with Volkwin Marg, which survives under the name "von Gerkan, Marg und Partner" (gmp). Von Gerkan also designed Berlin's main railway station, which is near the chancellery and within sight of the Reichstag parliament's glass cupola, though he fell out with rail operator Deutsche Bahn, which he said mutilated his design. Von Gerkan said Deutsche Bahn had made the underground hall look like a supermarket when it should have been an undulating, cathedral-like space. In 2008, Bahn and von Gerkan settled their dispute, with the rail operator paying an undisclosed sum to a foundation set up by the architect's office.

A climate activist glues herself to a runway at the Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) during a protest, in Berlin, Germany November 24, 2022, in this still image obtained from a handout video. The activists from the Last Generation environmental group called on the public to stop travelling by air and on the government to stop subsidising it. The protest, the latest by climate activists in Germany, also urged the government to expand cheap train travel offers. A spokesperson for the airport said the activists had entered the airport from two points in the north and south, and police had detained them. Flight tracking website FlightRadar24 showed some aircraft that were originally heading to the airport changed their route.

The US and other NATO allies have in turn stepped up efforts to send Ukraine air defense systems. Among these advanced systems are the IRIS-T SLM and NASAMS. Since then, NATO countries like the US, Germany, and the Netherlands have publicly expressed a desire to quickly get air defense systems into the hands of Ukrainian forces. Germany's defense ministry said on Monday that it was delivering the first of four IRIS-T SLM air defense systems to Ukraine, adding that the recent attacks show "how important the air defense capability for Ukraine's self-defense is." The advanced IRIS-T SLM can defend against missiles as far as 25 miles away and hit targets flying at an altitude of around 12 miles.
REUTERS/Fabrizio Bensch/File PhotoMARIGNANE, France, Sept 22 (Reuters) - The head of Airbus Helicopters (AIR.PA) has urged Europe to back its domestic defence industry when launching major new military programmes, as a row simmers over U.S. arms imports. Airbus Helicopters is marking 30 years since it was born through a Franco-German merger prompted by the development of the original Tiger version, sponsored initially by France and Germany and later Spain. While it competes with Boeing and Leonardo (LDOF.MI) on attack helicopters, Airbus agreed earlier this year to maintain H-47 Chinook heavy-lift helicopters sold by Boeing to Germany. But he laid down a marker that Airbus would fight for future replacements of core programmes like the NH-90. Airbus has teamed up with Leonardo to research technology to be fed into the NGRC programme, backed by the European Union's European Defence Fund.
The walkout by security staff has resulted in a high three-digit number of flight cancellations, German airports association ADV said. Some 160 of them were at Duesseldorf airport, accounting for more than half of the planned 290 departures and arrivals, the airport said. At Cologne/Bonn, 94 out of 136 flights were called off, and Berlin airport's website also showed many cancelled flights. Tuesday's walkout will hit Germany's busiest airport, Frankfurt, which handled around 2.1 million passengers last month. Labour union Verdi is demanding that employers raise the wages of airport security staff by at least 1 euro an hour for the next 12 months and that staff in different parts of Germany earn the same.
