ROME (AP) — Rome prosecutors asked a judge Thursday to effectively close an investigation into Italian and U.N. health officials over Italy’s 2020 Covid-19 response without charges, on the grounds that no crimes were committed, a lawyer said. Already prosecutors had closed their case without filing charges against three of Italy’s past health ministers. Guerra had been the former head of the department of prevention in the Italian health ministry until 2017 and was a WHO envoy to Italy during the pandemic. De Vita said prosecutors determined the pandemic plan was in the process of being updated. He welcomed the decision to archive the case, saying it should have been closed two years ago as soon as Guerra provided documentation to prosecutors showing he had acted correctly.

Atalanta fans take detour to salute their ex-player Ilicic
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Ex-players can come in for many different forms of treatment from their former fans, but Josip Ilicic, who spent five years at Atalanta, is still very much in the hearts of the club's supporters. Ilicic left the club in August, 2022, his contract terminated by mutual agreement, after the player had struggled for some time with mental health issues. Ilicic joined his former club NK Maribor a month after leaving Atalanta, and the fans from Bergamo arrived at the club's training ground on Thursday morning to surprise the 35-year-old Slovenian. Two buses arrived, carrying 120 fans who had left Italy at midnight, and there were handshakes, hugs and chants for the beloved player, and plenty of photos taken with a visibly emotional and happy Ilicic. The fans left him a present of the banner they had used on that farewell night in Bergamo last year, and Ilicic also confirmed he will be present at Atalanta's game with Sturm Graz later on Thursday night.

France, where Ryanair serves cities such as Marseille and Bordeaux, has floated proposals for a minimum ticket price in an effort to reduce pollution from aviation. The French price proposal, which EU officials said has drawn some support from the Netherlands and Belgium, got short shrift from senior Ryanair executive Eddie Wilson. Having established a strong position in large parts of Western Europe, Ryanair is now looking east to countries such as Poland for further growth. Europe's main airlines lobby group expressed relief and called on more European coordination to support the sector. Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr has said a stronger ITA will reinvigorate competition in the Italian market but Ryanair's Wilson is unperturbed, describing ITA as a sideshow.

Sept 28 (Reuters) - Ryanair (RYA.I) announced on Thursday cuts to its winter schedule due to delays in the delivery of Boeing (BA.N) aircraft, but Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers said its full-year traffic forecast was unaffected "as yet". Ryanair said in a statement that it had expected to receive delivery of 27 aircraft between September and December. But due to production delays at the Spirit Fuselage facility in Wichita, Kansas, combined with Boeing repair and delivery delays in Seattle, it now expects to receive only 14 aircraft during the three-month period. "At this early date, we do not expect these delivery delays will materially affect our full-year traffic target of 183.5 million,” Group Chief Executive Michael O'Leary said. Ryanair had expected delivery of 57 Boeing aircraft between September 2023 and May 2024.

However, production delays at the Spirit Fuselage facility in Wichita, Kansas, combined with Boeing’s repair and delivery delays in Seattle, meant the budget airline now expects to receive only 14 aircraft between October and December. “At this early date, we do not expect these delivery delays will materially affect our full-year traffic target of 183.5 million [passengers],” Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary said. Asked if it could confirm the delays and when deliveries would be up to date, a spokesperson for Boeing said that the planemaker valued its partnership with Ryanair and was committed to supporting the airline. Ryanair already trimmed its full-year passenger forecast from 185 million in July, citing potential Boeing delays, as well as the impact of air traffic control strikes. Ryanair executives had said deliveries had “significantly improved” before Boeing discovered a production flaw last month that has slowed deliveries of its best-selling 737 MAX aircraft.

Neanderthal genes could be to blame for severe cases of COVID-19, The Wall Street Journal reported. Scientists in Italy found people with Neanderthal gene variants were more likely to be hospitalized. The research suggests the variants are a "major genetic risk factor for severe COVID-19." What they found is that "Neanderthal haplotype," a set of genetic variants associated with the human ancestor, is "the major genetic risk factor for severe COVID-19." The link between health and Neanderthal DNA has been suggested by other studies.

Rome CNN —An Italian cheesemaker died on Sunday after being crushed by thousands of rounds of Grana Padano cheese in the aging room of his factory in Bergamo, northern Italy, local authorities said. Giacomo Chiapparini, 74, had entered the aging room to check the automatic robot used to clean the cheese rounds during the aging process in his company’s warehouse, according to the Bergamo Carabinieri. It took more than 11 hours to find Chiapparini’s body under the cheese rounds. He was identified by his family, who live and work in the cheese factory, the Carabinieri spokesperson said. Chiapparini’s factory was founded in the late 1970s and produces around 15,000 wheels of Grana Padano cheese each year using milk from the cows raised at the factory, according to the company website.

ROME, July 6 (Reuters) - Italy's lower house of parliament on Thursday backed a parliamentary inquiry into the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the opposition voicing fears of a witch hunt against those in charge at the time. Giuseppe Conte and former health minister Roberto Speranza," Conte himself, who now heads the opposition 5-Star Movement, told parliament. After the result was announced, the coalition lawmakers shouted in chorus "truth, truth." Italy is not the only country holding an inquiry into the pandemic management. The good news: Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) first-quarter beat on Tuesday revealed a likely bottom in its struggling PC business. The not-as-good: The chipmaker won't resume the kind of growth we're used to until the second half of the year. Here's why: Management sees some "modest" data center growth in the second quarter, but demand remains suppressed as a result of ongoing cloud optimization efforts. Outlook AMD provided an outlook for the second quarter of 2023 that was slightly below expectations. Ultimately management expects sequential growth in client and data center to be offset by "modest declines" in gaming and embedded.
Roma and Milan share spoils with late goals in top-four battle

Milan remain fourth in the standings, level on 57 points with Roma in fifth, with both sides two points behind third-placed Juventus who travel to Bologna on Sunday. Roma's back luck, however, did not end there and Mourinho was forced to make an early change when defender Marash Kumbulla clashed inside the box with Milan forward Olivier Giroud. They had a decent chance just after the half-hour mark but forward Leao fired wide. Milan defenders Davide Calabria and Fikayo Tomori had two more chances before halftime but both missed the target. Milan host second-bottom Cremonese on Wednesday when Roma travel to ninth-placed Monza.
Wizz Air to suspend Moldova flights, citing security

Wizz Air said in a statement it would lay on extra flights from the Romanian city of Iasi as replacements, including a new service to Berlin, and more flights to Barcelona, Milan Bergamo, Bologna, Rome Ciampino, Rome Fuimicino, Dortumand, Larnaca, London Luton and Treviso. Flights to Budapest and Prague will not be replaced and those inbound to Chisinau will be reallocated to other destinations in the Wizz Air network, it said. Tensions between Russia and Moldova have grown in recent months as Russian missiles aimed at Ukraine have entered Moldovan airspace and authorities have blamed the Kremlin for fuelling anti-government protests, something it denies. It said the civil aviation authority and the ministry of infrastructure and regional development had been in "constant cooperation" with Wizz Air representatives and informed them of the procedures in place to ensure aviation security. The aviation authority would take "all necessary actions" to return Wizz Air to Chisinau airport as soon as possible, and to attract other low-cost airlines.

Jan 27 (Reuters) - Intel Corp (INTC.O) was set to erase nearly $10 billion in market value on Friday after the U.S. chipmaker stumped Wall Street with dismal earnings projections, fanning fears around a slump in the personal-computer market. The company predicted a surprise loss for the first quarter and its revenue forecast was $3 billion below estimates as it also struggled with slowing growth in the data center business. The company has been steadily losing market share to rivals like AMD, which has used contract chipmakers such as Taiwan-based TSMC (2330.TW) to make chips that outpace Intel's technology. Intel, which plans to cut $3 billion in costs this year, generated $7.7 billion in cash from operations in the fourth quarter and paid dividends of $1.5 billion. With capital expenditure estimated to be around $20 billion in 2023, analysts said the company should consider cutting its dividend.

Advanced Micro Devices could rally as it maintains server leadership and branches out in other areas of technology, Barclays said. Analyst Blayne Curtis upgraded the semiconductor maker to overweight from equal weight. "We would like to see AMD capture more of the AI opportunity and are intrigued by its recently announced MI300 (CPU+GPU shipping in 2H23)." In addition to AMD, Curtis upgraded Qualcomm and Seagate Technology to overweight from equal weight given his improved outlook for companies with exposure to data centers, personal computers and headsets. On the other hand, he downgraded Applied Materials and KLA to underweight from equal weight and Veeco Instruments to equal weight from overweight, citing continued challenges for wafer fab equipment.
