MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has approved ending a ban on deploying the nation’s healthcare workers, his labour minister said on Saturday, clearing the way for thousands of nurses to take up jobs overseas. Slideshow ( 2 images )“The president already approved the lifting of the temporary suspension of deployment of nurses and other medical workers,” Labour Secretary Silvestre Bello told Reuters. To ensure the Philippines has enough medical professionals to continue to fight the pandemic at home, only 5,000 healthcare workers will be allowed to leave every year, Bello said. “We are starting only with a cap of 5,000 so we will not run out (of medical workers), but this may increase eventually,” Bello said. The government in April barred nurses, doctors and other medical workers from leaving, saying they were needed to fight the coronavirus crisis at home.

(Reuters) - Spanish-language misinformation flourished online in the days surrounding the U.S. election, even as social media companies moved to stem falsehoods that could affect the vote or spark violence. Social media companies introduced new rules to crack down on election-related misinformation through labeling content, restricting its reach or removing it, but enforcement has been uneven. Lisa Zayas, a progressive organizer in Florida, provided Reuters with examples of Spanish-language misinformation spread through multiple WhatsApp channels used in her local community. Avaaz, a global civic organization, said on Thursday it found at least 43 Spanish-language posts across social media promoting false narratives about the election. YouTube removed two videos containing Spanish-langauge election misinformation that had racked up thousands of views after Reuters flagged them to a spokesperson, who said the company’s policies applied “consistently across all languages and regions.”

“The October jobs report is likely to show evidence of a weakening labor market,” said Dean Baker, senior economist at the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington. That would be the smallest gain since the jobs recovery started in May and leave employment 10.1 million jobs below its February peak. Fed Chair Jerome Powell acknowledged the pace of improvement in the economy and labor market had moderated, noting that the recovery would be stronger with more fiscal support. Lack of fiscal stimulus and spiraling new coronavirus infections across the country have put the economy on a sharply slower growth path heading into the fourth quarter. With labor market momentum ebbing, average hourly earnings are forecast rising 0.2% in October after gaining 0.1% in September.

Dr. Anita Kemi DaSilva-Ibru, Women at Risk International FoundationHer family said her attackers raped her and the student died while being treated at the hospital. "Rape is an epidemic in this country," DaSilva-Ibru told CNN. As much as we need to carry out our duties, we also need to ensure our workers are adequately protected," DaSilva-Ibru told CNN. The challenges Ibru faces to keep the center open, doesn't compare to what sexual violence victims have experienced as a result of this pandemic, she said. The survivor told CNN she did not make a police complaint because she was worried about the stigma and strain that the rape might have on her parents.
