Walter de Heer, a professor of physics at Georgia Institute of Technology, holds a molecular model of graphene in his lab. Photo: Georgia Institute of TechnologyA team of scientists have determined graphene, the same substance found in common pencil lead, can act as a semiconductor—helping set it on the path to one day be turned into computer chips. The research, published in the scientific journal Nature last week, opens up the possibility that graphene, long a subject of scientific study, could be used as an alternative to silicon, the most prevalent material found in chips today.

Meta Platforms, led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, has sought to stake its claim in the red-hot AI market as an open-source AI system through its Llama 2 AI model. Photo: CARLOS BARRIA/REUTERSMeta Platforms and International Business Machines launched a coalition of more than 50 artificial intelligence companies and research institutions that are pushing a so-called open model of AI, hoping to gain traction in a fast-growing market. The AI Alliance, whose members include Intel, Oracle , Cornell University and the National Science Foundation, said it is pooling resources to stand behind “open innovation and open science” in AI. Its members largely support open source, an approach in which technology is shared free and draws on a history of collaboration among Big Tech, academics and a fervent movement of independent programmers.

Google and other companies in the generative AI space see an opportunity to win over customers following the turmoil at OpenAI. Photo: Alex Kraus/Bloomberg NewsOpenAI’s rivals this week raced to capitalize on the turmoil engulfing the artificial intelligence powerhouse, targeting its customers with incentives to switch to their platforms. Google said its sales team launched a campaign to persuade customers to switch from OpenAI. It is matching OpenAI’s pricing, providing cloud credits if customers use its AI software and offering assistance switching to its platform. Amazon said recent events underscore the value of its selected generative AI strategy, whereby customers can choose between many AI systems versus going all-in on OpenAI or a single vendor.

Crusoe Energy, which began as a cryptocurrency mining operation, converts flared gas into electricity that powers its data centers. Photo: Crusoe EnergyThe immense amount of energy needed to power generative artificial intelligence models, like the one behind ChatGPT, is creating a new market for data centers that run on alternative energy sources. Supply of electricity, which currently powers the vast majority of data centers, is already strained from existing demands on the country’s electric grids. AI could consume up to 3.5% of the world’s electricity by 2030, according to an estimate from IT research and consulting firm Gartner .

Analysts say that content safety filters will soon become a requisite for enterprises to sign up for any generative AI-based tools vendors sell. Photo: dado ruvic/ReutersBusinesses weighing the risks and benefits of generative artificial intelligence are running up against a challenge social-media platforms have long wrestled with: preventing technology from being hijacked for malicious ends. Taking a page from those platforms, business technology leaders are turning to a mixture of software-based “guardrails” and human moderators to keep its use within prescribed bounds.
