Apple has started selling accessories for its new Vision Pro mixed reality headset. AdvertisementThe Apple Vision Pro just got a little more expensive, thanks to a new line of accessories. Pre-orders for the Vision Pro began the same day, with delivery already backed up at least into March. An extra light seal, which blocks out light and helps the Vision Pro better fit your face, goes for $199. Add these up, and the cost for the Vision Pro and some accessories could easily exceed $4,000.

Protesters demonstrated over the war in the Gaza Strip at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., this month. Photo: brian snyder/ReutersThe U.S. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights on Tuesday added Harvard University to the list of schools the agency is investigating as part of a federal crackdown on race- and religious-based harassment since the start of the conflict in Gaza began last month. Harvard is the 15th school and 8th college or university added to the list since the conflict began Oct. 7, according to the agency’s website. Other colleges include The University of Pennsylvania, Wellesley College and Columbia University. The number of schools under investigation this year doubled since the conflict started.

Three years ago, Erin Mullen arrived at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst exhausted by the pandemic and without any appetite for political demonstrations. Last month she sat in a holding cell in an Amherst jail with her hands cuffed behind her back, one of 57 students arrested while protesting the conflict in Gaza. Mullen is white, her parents were raised Catholic and she grew up in an upper middle class Boston suburb. Her political awakening—along with those of tens of thousands of her generation now enrolled at college—is fueling a surge of campus unrest not seen since the Vietnam War.

EVANSTON, Ill.— School leaders in this college town just north of Chicago have been battling a sizable academic achievement gap between Black, Latino and white students for decades. So a few years ago, the school district decided to try something new at the high school: classrooms voluntarily separated by race. Nearly 200 Black and Latino students at Evanston Township High School signed up this year for math classes and a writing seminar intended for students of the same race, taught by a teacher of color. These optional so-called affinity classes are designed to address the achievement gap by making students feel more comfortable in class, district leaders have said, particularly in Advanced Placement courses that historically have enrolled few Black and Latino students.

SALEM, Mass.—Three centuries ago, hysteria swept this town and residents accused about 200 people of witchcraft. This month, local resentment toward witches is brewing again. One million tourists, many sporting pointy black hats, layers of mascara and long capes, are expected to course through this city’s historic downtown in October to visit cemeteries, haunted houses and witch museums. Traffic is choked. Sidewalks are jammed.

Protesters in Tel Aviv shared mixed emotions over Israel’s political climate, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the conflict with Hamas, with the country on the brink of a ground invasion of Gaza. Photo: Ben C. SolomonLeaders of some of the nation’s most high-profile colleges and universities are re-evaluating their roles as moral arbiters and public commentators in response to the bloody conflict now unfolding in Israel and Gaza. Backlash against their declarations has forced many to stumble—issuing updates to their statements, and then clarifications to their updates—in a near impossible effort to appease irate activists on both sides of a seemingly intractable issue.

CNN —Apple retired its Lightning charger on Tuesday exactly 11 years to the day it was first announced. The EU’s decision is part of a greater effort to tackle e-waste overall, but could it generate more in the short term as people phase out their Lightning cables. But knockoffs abound, and some USB-C chargers are much safer than others. Among CNN Underscored’s top recommendations for USB-C chargers are from big brands, including Anker, Belkin, Apple, Amazon and Google. Retiring the Lightning cable could even generate, in the short term, a surge of e-waste as iPhone users toss their useless Lightning cables in a drawer.
