BEIRUT (Reuters) - Four jailed Saudi women’s rights activists were given a rare appearance in court on Wednesday, the family of one of them said, as the kingdom’s human rights record faces new scrutiny following the election defeat of U.S. President Donald Trump. FILE PHOTO: Saudi women's rights activist Loujain al-Hathloul is seen in this undated handout picture. The judge announced he was transferring the case from regular criminal court to a terrorism court, Lina al-Hathloul said. Another sister, Alia al-Hathloul, tweeted that three other prominent women’s rights activists - Nassima Al-Sadah, Samar Badawi and Nouf Abdelaziz - had also appeared. In a letter to the Saudi ambassador to Washington on Tuesday, a bipartisan group of senators called on Saudi Arabia to release the women’s rights activists.

So this will continue on for another couple of months, right until the end,” Abrams said during a virtual Beirut Institute event. President-elect Joe Biden, set to take office on Jan. 20, has said he will return the United States to the nuclear deal, if Iran resumes compliance. Netanyahu Held Secret Meeting with Saudi Crown Prince, Israeli Media Reports

BEIRUT, Lebanon — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel flew to Saudi Arabia for a covert meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, Israeli news media reported on Monday. The reported visit, Sunday night, would be the first known meeting between high-level Israeli and Saudi leaders and could signal an acceleration of gradually warming relations between the two powers. Mr. Netanyahu’s visit was reported by Army Radio and Kan public radio in Israel, which cited an unidentified official saying that the prime minister had flown with Yossi Cohen, the head of the Mossad spy agency, to Neom, a futuristic city Prince Mohammed is planning near the Red Sea coast. Saudi officials and Mr. Netanyahu’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. On Monday, Topaz Luk, a media adviser to Mr. Netanyahu, posted an article on Twitter about the latest moves of Mr. Netanyahu’s defense minister and rival, Benny Gantz, with a comment that read: “Gantz plays politics while the prime minister makes peace,” perhaps hinting at a confirmation of the meeting.

Dalati Nohra/Handout via REUTERSBEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanese President Michel Aoun said on Saturday that a forensic audit of the central bank was vital to combat corruption, and that he would get it back on track after the consultancy contracted to carry it out withdrew. “Our reality today is not promising,” the president said in a televised speech to mark Independence Day, adding that Lebanon was a prisoner of corruption, political scheming and external dictations. “If we want statehood, then we must fight corruption ... and this begins by imposing the forensic financial audit,” he said, adding he would not “back off” on the issue. Five Lebanese prisoners die in accident following mass prison break-out
  + stars: | 2020-11-21 | by ( Reuters Staff | ) www.reuters.com sentiment -1.00   time to read: +1 min
The ISF statement did not say how the 69 prisoners had escaped from the facility, which a security source said holds pre-trial detainees and is part of Baabda district prison near Beirut. The ISF said 15 prisoners had been caught while four others turned themselves in. The five died when a car they seized crashed into a tree in what the statement described as an accident while one prisoner was injured and taken to hospital. The state news agency NNA earlier said the prisoners had escaped from the prison at dawn after breaking open cell doors. It said that while the Lebanese government had taken several measures, including some releases, the authorities should prioritise releasing prisoners who had served their sentences and expedite a review of pre-trial detainees.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon’s authorities signed a contract this month with a German company to clear dangerous material stored for more than a decade at Beirut port, the site of a seismic blast in August that killed about 200 people and wrecked swathes of the capital. FILE PHOTO: A view shows damage at the site of a massive explosion in Beirut's port area, as part of the city's skyline in seen in the background, in Beirut, Lebanon August 12, 2020. At least some of the chemicals the German firm will remove had been in storage at the port since 2009, although the statement did not give precise details. The authorities ignored several warnings by officials about the dangers of storing the material there. The authorities have detained 25 people, including port and customs officials, and say the probe is moving as fast as possible.

FILE PHOTO: FILE PHOTO: Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman attends the Gulf Cooperation Council's (GCC) 40th Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia December 10, 2019. DISRUPTIONSThe event’s virtual nature does at least align with Saudi Arabia’s ambitious digital agendas and technology-focused initiatives, “one bright spot amid the coronavirus-related disruptions,” Mogielnicki said. Against this backdrop is a flurry of activity by human rights groups and western lawmakers who have called on G20 capitals to boycott the event, renewing global attention on Saudi Arabia’s rights record. Earlier this month, the Saudi ambassador to Britain said the kingdom was considering clemency for some of the jailed women’s rights activists. Saudi Arabia jailed eight people for between seven and 20 years for Khashoggi’s killing.

BEIRUT, Lebanon — For the last four years, President Trump’s close relationship with Saudi Arabia meant that there was seemingly nothing its de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, could do to earn a rebuke from the White House. Saudi bombs killed civilians in Yemen, Saudi activists went to jail, and Saudi agents dismembered the dissident Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul. None of it shook Mr. Trump’s commitment to the kingdom as a reliable partner against Iran and an important purchaser of American weapons. Now Saudi Arabia is bracing for a new American leader who has vowed to end support for the Yemen war, penalize human rights violations and treat Saudi Arabia like “the pariah that they are.”“It is past time to restore a sense of balance, perspective and fidelity to our values in our relationships in the Middle East,” President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. told the Council on Foreign Relations last year when asked about Saudi Arabia. “We will make clear that America will never again check its principles at the door just to buy oil or sell weapons.”

REUTERS/Aziz Taher/File PhotoBEIRUT (Reuters) - President Michel Aoun on Thursday specified Lebanon’s starting point for demarcating its sea border with Israel under U.S.-mediated talks, in the first public confirmation of a stance sources say actually increases the size of the disputed area. Israel and Lebanon launched the negotiations last month with delegations from the long-time foes convening at a U.N. base to try to agree on the unresolved border that has held up hydrocarbon exploration in the potentially gas-rich area. They said the Lebanese proposal extended farther south than the border Lebanon had years before presented to the United Nations and that of the Israeli team pushing the boundary farther north than Israel’s original position. The talks, the culmination of three years of diplomacy by Washington, are due to resume in December.

As news of the shooting broke, Iran’s official news media identified the victims as Habib Daoud, a Lebanese history professor, and his 27-year-old daughter Maryam. Several Lebanese with close ties to Iran said they had not heard of him or his killing. A search of Lebanese news media found no reports of a Lebanese history professor killed in Iran last summer. One of the intelligence officials said that Habib Daoud was an alias Iranian officials gave Mr. al-Masri and the history teaching job was a cover story. Iran may have had good reason for wanting to hide the fact that it was harboring an avowed enemy, but it was less clear why Iranian officials would have taken in the Qaeda leader to begin with.

But they soon learned that "Operation Urgent Fury" meant a US invasion of Grenada, a tiny Caribbean island tucked away between Puerto Rico and Venezuela. The US military knew so little about the country, it had to plan the invasion using maps normally sold to tourists. Army Rangers parachute into Grenada during Operation Urgent Fury. BEIRUT (Reuters) - Influential Lebanese Christian politician Gebran Bassil said on Sunday that U.S. sanctions against him were unjust, politically motivated and the result of his refusal to break ties with Hezbollah. The U.S. Treasury Department accused Bassil of being at the “forefront of corruption in Lebanon”. The FPM has a political alliance with Hezbollah, which has become Lebanon’s most powerful political force. He said the sanctions should not hold up forming a new government to tackle a financial meltdown, Lebanon’s worst crisis since its 1975-1990 civil war.

Lebanon's president seeks evidence behind U.S. sanctions on son-in-law

BEIRUT (Reuters) - President Michel Aoun said on Saturday that Lebanon would seek evidence and documents from the United States that led Washington to impose sanctions on his son-in-law Gebran Bassil, a prominent Christian politician. Aoun asked Lebanon’s caretaker foreign minister, Charbel Wehbe, to obtain evidence and documents that should be submitted to Lebanon’s judiciary “to take the necessary legal measures”, the presidency tweeted. “Sanctions have not scared me nor promises tempted me,” Bassil said in a Twitter post following the announcement. The FPM has a political alliance with Hezbollah, which has become Lebanon’s most powerful political force. A senior U.S. official said Bassil’s support for the armed group Hezbollah was “every bit of the motivation” for targeting him for sanctions.
