June's historical average return comes out at just 0.1% while July typically sees a 1.2% gain, according to Stovall. Summer exception This summer could prove to be an exception to the typical summer lull, given the upcoming presidential election, Stovall said, noting that the broad market index has posted an average 3.7% summer increase during the 19 election years since World War II. Ahead of this year's election, Stovall expects a few aerospace and defense contractors to stand out. Other areas of the market that should survive and thrive during a slow summer period are consumer staples companies, tobacco names, health-care distributors and pharmaceuticals, Stovall said. Costco and Walmart shares are up roughly 29% and 2% this year, respectively, posting strong returns as consumers have become more motivated by price and value in a high-inflation environment.

"Not only does this tariff protect American car companies from cheap Chinese electric vehicles, it also means that their regular vehicles — their regular cars and trucks and hybrids — will benefit, too," he said. But with Biden increasing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles from 25% to 100% this year, automakers like Ford and General Motors have less to worry about. Biden will also raise tariffs on semiconductors, solar cells, masks and medical gloves as well as issue first-time tariffs on medical needles on syringes. Cramer also said Ford shares can go higher if the company can "curtail the immense losses in electric vehicles," which will be easier to do with these new tariffs. "The chief reason GM and Ford stocks sell at the bottom of the S&P 500 barrel is because of this existential Chinese threat," he said.

The U.S. population is getting older and per capita health care spending has been rising — other than the pandemic blip — very steadily for half a century. We'll detail a simple trade on a resilient health care industry stock that stands to benefit from that long-term trend. Becton Dickinson (BDX) has a large array of healthcare products and consequently doesn't exhibit the volatility that some other health care companies have like biotech. Unsurprisingly, when we look at the health care sector, we also see consistent long-term growth. The Health Care Select Sector Index (IXV) includes more than 60 companies in pharmaceuticals, biotech, equipment, managed care, service providers and distribution.

Cramer lists his major themes for the market in 2024
  + stars: | 2024-01-17 | by ( Julie Coleman | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday reviewed what he thinks will be major themes on the market in 2024, including strength in the health-care sector due to weight loss drugs and success for mergers and acquisitions. With the major indexes declining on Wednesday, Cramer thought it would be helpful to tell investors what broader market themes they can reference on down days. And if you understand the themes behind them, you won't get shaken out by a bad tape—you'll use it to your advantage," Cramer said. He wondered whether other stocks would join the ranks of the "Magnificent Seven," but conceded that any contenders will be involved with artificial intelligence. "I'll have a lot more themes as the year goes on, because I'm not constrained by the calendar," he said.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDec 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Friday that Becton Dickinson (BDX.N) is recalling its Alaris infusion pumps due to compatibility issues with Cardinal Health's (CAH.N) Monoject syringes. However, the dimensions for Monoject syringes have recently changed while rebranding the syringes from Covidien Monoject to Cardinal Health Monoject. Last month, the FDA warned healthcare providers not to use Cardinal's Monoject syringes with patient-controlled pain management pumps and syringe pumps after the company initiated a recall due to compatibility problems. On Sept. 15, BD asked its customers to stop using Cardinal's Monoject syringes with BD's Alaris pumps. An infusion pump is a medical device that delivers fluids such as nutrients and medications into a patient's body in controlled amounts.

HONG KONG (AP) — Asian shares retreated Friday after rising bond market yields once again weighed on Wall Street, ending a lull in wider swings in prices during a brief respite from market moving data releases. A financial services business of China’s biggest bank, ICBC, said it was it by a ransomware attack that reportedly disrupted trading in the U.S. Treasury market. It was unclear how much of an impact the attack had on Treasury market trading. But it quickly sagged as Treasury yields rose following a report that suggested the U.S. job market remains remarkably solid. There's an opportunity for investors in pharmaceuticals that's been "underrepresented for a very long time," according to fund manager Philip Ripman of Storebrand Asset Management. The area is women's healthcare, according to Ripman, who manages the $1 billion Storebrand Global Solutions fund. In medical tech funding, only 2% was focused on non-cancer-related women's health conditions. The area of femtech — or software and tech products relating to women's health — is certainly growing. Regarding the cloud, AMZN's Web Services business is the market leader in cloud infrastructure services. Moreover, the scale of AMZN's web services business provides many cost advantages as very few companies can compete with AMZN's investment spend and first-mover advantage. Over the long term, we would expect MDLZ to generate double-digit total returns, consisting of high-single digit EPS growth and the 2.3% dividend. There is a long runway remaining for cloud growth as companies slowly deal with legacy investments that still drive value but are not cloud-based. Management remains committed to its goal of high single-digit EPS growth in 2023, followed by sustained double-digit growth in 2024 and beyond.
