Read previewPresident Joe Biden's cognitive abilities may be better than some say they are — at least according to two AI chatbots. Some who analyzed it said Hur's claims about Biden's memory issues were overstated. And both chatbots' verdicts were that Biden's cognitive abilities are just fine. "These aspects are essential indicators of cognitive abilities and suggest that he could perform cognitively demanding tasks during the interview." AdvertisementWhen it came to Biden's memory, ChatGPT found that he displayed memory recall by describing interactions and processes related to handling classified documents with context.

The sun rises through the North Portico of the White House in Washington, DC, on March 11. Jim Watson/AFP/Getty ImagesWhite House officials are planning a real-time, rapid-response and fact-checking operation for Robert Hur’s testimony on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, according to a White House official. Hur’s highly anticipated appearance comes weeks after he released a controversial report on his investigation into Biden’s handling of classified materials. The White House has pushed back forcefully on Hur’s report, both in its substance and its motivation. “We are preparing to make clear yet again that the conclusion of the investigation was that there was no case here,” the White House official said.

In the 388-page report released last month, Hur concluded that Biden mishandled and improperly disclosed classified information after leaving the vice-presidency. But Hur said that he didn’t believe there was enough evidence to charge Biden with a crime. According to the transcript, Biden asks aloud when he was vice president, as he tried to recall timelines. “Remember, in this time frame, my son is either deployed or is dying,” Biden said, according to the transcript. The transcript shows investigators at times seeming to struggle to keep control, as Biden used up time with long answers.

But the transcript of Biden's interview, which was reviewed by NBC News, paints a more nuanced picture on both sides. At one point, Hur acknowledged that some of the questions he would ask would "relate to events that happened years ago." According to the review of the transcript, Biden at times expanded beyond the narrow subject areas of particular questions. In his opening statement, Hur planned to defend his investigation, the final report and his treatment of Biden's age. He also noted that some of the issues he was dealing with as vice president continue today.

Robert Hur, who had been appointed to investigate whether Biden mishandled classified documents, wrote that the president couldn’t recall in an interview with prosecutors the date when his adult son, Beau, died of cancer. And Biden recalled the specific date that Beau died, although he briefly wondered aloud about the year as the conversation toggled between various events. “Oh, God, May 30th.”A White House lawyer interjected by saying, “2015.”“Was it 2015 he had died?” Biden asked. Beau died while Biden was serving as vice president, and his deep sorrow helped deter him from running for president in 2016, when Trump ultimately defeated Hillary Clinton. Biden mentioned the death during an interview that Hur conducted on Oct. 8.

The former president’s focus on Biden’s age reflects the fact that one good week will not change a harsh reality of the coming eight months. After a yearlong investigation, Hur concluded that Biden mishandled classified material and improperly disclosed classified information as a private citizen. Here are four key things to look for in Tuesday’s high-stakes hearing:What will Hur say about Biden’s age and memory? (At 81, Biden is the oldest US president in history, though Donald Trump is only a few years younger at 77.) House Republicans are looking for Hur’s public testimony to provide fresh momentum to their sputtering impeachment inquiry into Biden. Hur’s approach will determine how easy, or hard, it is for lawmakers to extract the political moments that they want.

Just 1 in 3 voters are confident in Joe Biden's physical and mental faculties, per a new poll. But Biden's support overall is roughly the same as it was in 2020. AdvertisementA new poll from Monmouth University shows that just 1 in 3 voters are confident in President Joe Biden's physical and mental faculties, though support for the 2024 presidential candidate is around the same as from 2020. Conducted between February 8 to 12 with 902 US adults, the poll found that 32% of respondents felt confident in the 81-year-old Biden's "mental & physical stamina." Despite the waning public confidence in Biden's mental and physical strength, the poll found that support for the Democratic candidate remains about the same as in 2020 when he first faced off against Trump for president.

A new source for newsFor the Biden campaign, joining the social media site presents the possibility for modest rewards but also high risks. “The campaign is now on TikTok because frankly that’s where people are,” Biden campaign spokesperson Seth Schuster said in a statement to CNN. Those concerns have kept the White House off the app and may have delayed the Biden campaign’s decision to join. “It’s a meaningful signal that the Biden campaign acknowledges the power that young voters will have in November and prioritizes engagement with us,” said Jack Lobel, the national press secretary for Voters of Tomorrow. “This technique would’ve been successful, in my opinion, if he actually listened to young voters,” said.

Last fall I found myself at a dinner party that included a former Biden administration official and a Democratic donor, and the conversation turned, naturally, to President Biden’s age and his prospects for re-election. The gulf in their perceptions, I think, speaks to the fact that Biden’s age has impaired his ability to campaign much more than his ability to govern, which has created an impossible dilemma for the Democratic Party. I’m not aware of any leaks from the White House suggesting that Biden is confused, exhausted or forgetful when setting priorities or making decisions. His words brought to the surface deep, terrifying doubts about Biden’s ability to do the one part of his job that matters above all others, which is beating Donald Trump. Since Hur decided not to charge Biden with any crimes, his comments about Biden’s age, particularly his claim that Biden couldn’t remember the year his son Beau died, seemed designed to shiv him politically.

One of the most difficult conversations you can have in life is with a parent or peer who is becoming too old and infirm to work. Whether the infirmity is physical or mental, often your loved one is the last person to realize his own deficiencies, so he may interpret respectful, genuine concern as a personal attack. This conversation is difficult enough when it’s conducted entirely in private with friends and family. It’s infinitely more difficult when it plays out in public and involves the president of the United States. The top-line conclusion of the special counsel Robert Hur’s report regarding the discovery of classified information at Joe Biden’s home is good for the president.

Biden aides say they do not expect the president or his campaign to take on the age question more directly. Messina compared the special counsel's report to former FBI Director James Comey's October 2016 announcement that he was further investigating former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's handling of classified emails. Beyond celebrating the release of the special counsel's embarrassing descriptions of Biden, Trump won a new trove of delegates in Nevada's Thursday caucuses, where he ran unopposed. Barry Goodman, a Biden fundraiser from Michigan, said he’s had some donors “take a wait and see approach” about supporting Biden, even before the special counsel’s announcement.

The White House has said Biden erred in having the documents in his home and Ian Sams, a spokesperson for the White House counsel's office, said on Friday that Biden would soon name a task force “to ensure that there are better processes in place” to protect classified materials when administrations change. and grew visibly angry at the White House, as he denied forgetting when his son died. Beau Biden died of brain cancer in 2015 at the age of 46. Sams suggested that the political environment led Hur, who was appointed as U.S. attorney by former President Donald Trump, to include the comments. “There’s an environment that we are in, that generates a ton of pressure, because you have congressional Republicans, other Republicans, attacking prosecutors that they don’t like,” he said.

Some Democrats are fearful that are entering a "Comey moment" in the wake of special counsel Robert Hur's report. Democrats who are having fever dreams about James Comey shouldn't resort to a full freakout over special counsel Robert Hur's blistering views of President Joe Biden's alleged declining memory. The biggest difference is that Comey made his initial comments in July 2016, months later in the political calendar. Comey also made his statements on camera, a distinction that matters when cable TV producers can cue up old footage months later. Unlike Comey, most of this is under Biden's control.

Biden’s aides know there is no topic more likely to draw their boss’ fury than a slight against his family. Only about 45 minutes before Hur’s report was released publicly, the White House was working to downplay the verbal slip-ups, saying it’s common for people to misspeak. “Many people, elected officials … they can misspeak sometimes,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, citing recent examples from House Speaker Mike Johnson and TV host Sean Hannity. The report was released anyway, with the objections of Biden’s lawyers included – but only toward the end of the nearly 400-page report. “I was in the middle of handling an international crisis,” Biden said Thursday about an hour after the report was released.

The White House continues to push back furiously on the special counsel report on President Biden’s handling of classified documents, with one official telling CNN that it views some of the criticism as “way out of line” and “just wrong.”White House officials are particularly aggrieved by allegations in the report about Biden having memory and recall problems, including during Biden’s multi-hour sit-down with Hur in October as well as related to the death of Biden’s son, Beau. The weekend of Biden’s interview, Hamas had attacked Israel. “Of course, he was understandably distracted and managing a crisis in Israel and the Middle East,” the official said. “To now retrospectively go back and suggest it is indicative of some bigger issue with memory is wrong. It’s just wrong.”White House officials are also taking issue with a reference in the report that says Biden “did not remember, even within several years, when his son Beau died.”“He remembers the day Beau died every day of his life and to suggest otherwise is insulting,” this official said.

"My memory has not gotten worse," Biden told reporters in a nationally televised address at the White House hours after Hur released his report. But moments later, Biden referred to Egypt's president as the "president of Mexico." "How in the hell dare he raise that," Biden said of Hur. The main legal takeaway from Hur's report was the special counsel's decision not to criminally charge Biden despite what Hur said was the president's willful retention of classified documents and disclosure of of some classified material to the ghostwriter of his 2017 memoir. Biden said, "I've seen the headlines since the report was released about my willful retention of documents.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Special Counsel Robert Hur's report is that President Joe Biden is struggling with memory issues. Hur's report, while not recommending any criminal charges over Biden's handling of classified documents, included seemingly grave warnings about the president's mental acuity. During a portion dealing with classified documents pertaining to Afghanistan, the report noted that the 81-year-old president "would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory." Washington CNN —Special counsel Robert Hur released a searing report Thursday that concluded President Joe Biden willfully retained and disclosed classified military and national security information but recommended he not face charges after a yearlong investigation into his handling of classified documents. According to the report, Biden – during the 2023 interview – did not remember when his son Beau died nor the years he was vice president. The unredacted report found that Biden carelessly handled classified materials after he left the vice presidency, even sharing classified materials with the ghostwriter for his autobiography. But the report by special counsel Robert K. Hur recommended that Biden not be prosecuted, since the evidence was not powerful enough to charge him. It was that headline Biden himself seized on Wednesday afternoon as he rallied fellow Democrats at their retreat in Leesburg, Virginia. "I was especially pleased to see the special counsel make clear the stark differences in this case and Donald Trump," Biden added, referring to the 40 -count indictment against the former president. Trump is facing serious legal consequences because of his classified documents case, but Biden may face serious political damage from the special counsel's report on his handling of classified materials.
