If you like your European midweek football this is the week for you, with 54 Champions League, Europa League and Conference League matches being crammed into three nights. The Champions League kicked things off with some of the competition’s favourites beginning to bare their teeth. It was also, incredibly, their 31st defeat from 37 Champions League group stage away games. Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland and a first Champions League goal for James McAtee saw City get their first win of this year’s competition. United fell to a third league defeat in six games on Sunday, losing 3-0 at home against Tottenham amid captain Bruno Fernandes’ red card. There were dramatic results across the Premier League this weekend, as well as a crowd-disrupted Madrid derby in La Liga and a novel way of protesting a refereeing decision by José Mourinho in Turkey. England’s Premier League: United’s woes persistThe pressure on United manager Erik ten Hag has grown after the club’s latest defeat against Tottenham, another humiliation in an underwhelming start to the season. It means that United is 12th in the Premier League table having also suffered a miserable 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford against Liverpool earlier this month. For me, it’s just not a really good decision.”Elsewhere in the Premier League, Liverpool capitalized on Manchester City’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle by moving top of the table after six games.

CNN —Some Arsenal fans might have been forgiven for waking up in a cold sweat in the nights leading up to Tuesday’s Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Bayern Munich. The 30-year-old became the fastest player to score 20 Bundesliga goals, reaching the landmark in just 14 matches, well ahead of Uwe Seeler’s previous record of 21. He also has four hat-tricks to his name, something no player had previously achieved in their first Bundesliga season. Arsenal fans thought Kane should have been shown a red card in the second half. With Bayern fans banned from the match due as punishment for throwing flares onto the pitch during their side’s win against Lazio in the previous round, you could hear a pin drop inside the Emirates.

Xabi Alonso was appointed the club’s head coach in October 2022, with Leverkusen languishing near the bottom of the German table. Prior to being appointed Leverkusen’s manager, Alonso had coached Real Madrid’s Under-14 team and Real Sociedad’s B team. We have seen in the past what else can happen,” Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tag told Dazn after the victory over Köln. There are 10 games remaining in the Bundesliga season and Leverkusen is the strong favorite to win its first ever league title. CNN —It’s safe to say that Harry Kane is enjoying life in Germany. The England captain made his high-profile move from boyhood club Tottenham to Bayern Munich in August and he hasn’t looked back. No player has scored more after 11 Bundesliga games, with Bayern’s former talisman Robert Lewandowski holding the previous record of 16. Kane, the league’s top scorer, also has four goals in the Champions League with Bundesliga leaders Bayern yet to drop points in the group stage. “It is impressive,” Bayern Munich’s sports director Christoph Freund said, per Reuters, after Kane’s double in the team’s 4-2 win against Heidenheim.

Thomas Müller hit the post with Bayern looking to increase its lead, before 18-year-old forward Mathys Tel scored his first Champions League goal moments later to make it 4-2. “It was a crazy finish,” Kane, who has now scored five goals from his first six appearances in Germany, told TNT Sports.

England captain Kane and his likely successor Bellingham scored key goals for Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, respectively, to show why they are adored already by their new home fans. Bayern Munich wins 27-0 in first match of preseason

CNN —To say Bayern Munich’s opening preseason friendly was a one-sided affair would be something of an understatement. The defending German champion beat ninth-tier Rottach-Egern 27-0 on Tuesday as Bayern showed no mercy against the amateur side – perhaps the team doesn’t need Harry Kane after all. The match took place at Bayern Munich’s training camp near the town of Tegernsee, with head coach Thomas Tuchel playing two entirely different teams to start each half. New signing Konrad Laimer got his first goal in a Bayern Munich shirt. Frank Hoermann/SVEN SIMON/dpa/APIn attendance was Bayern’s new signing Minjae Kim, who put pen to paper just hours before the preseason friendly.

Bundesliga set for thrilling final day title decider
  + stars: | 2023-05-22 | by ( Aimee Lewis | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
In fact, the last season Bayern didn’t win the championship was the 2011/12 campaign, when now Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp guided Borussia Dortmund to the title. That leaves soccer fans looking to the Bundesliga for a dose of end-of-season drama with the championship set to be decided on the final day of the season. “We stopped moving, stopped helping, stopped showing courage.”Perhaps, Bayern had become complacent, suffering the shock loss despite taking a 25th-minute lead through Serge Gnabry. Former Chelsea and Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel took over at Bayern in March. Bayern travels to 10th-placed FC Köln on the final matchday hoping for a win and a surprise Dortmund slip up in what is set to be a tense final day.
The Champions League Ventures Down Memory Lane

Bayern Munich will not take this well. The club is unlikely to shrug its shoulders at being eliminated from not only the Champions League but the German cup, too, in the space of a few days. Thomas Tuchel, freshly installed as Nagelsmann’s replacement, should be safe for now, but all around him will be a blur of change. There was a sense, watching Manchester City hold Bayern at bay on Wednesday evening, of two clubs moving in opposite directions. Like Juventus and Barcelona before it, Bayern Munich will at some point bow to, or be bowed by, England’s economic primacy.
CNN —Barcelona talked a lot about “economic levers” as the Catalan club looks to improve its finances, but it won’t be able to use the Champions League pulley anymore after exiting at the competition’s group stage for the second consecutive season. Rubbing salt into the wound, Barca was then thumped 3-0 by Bayern, who have now beaten the La Liga side in their previous six meetings. In that run of losses Barca has conceded 22 goals to Bayern and has only scored four – none in their last four matches. Having qualified for the Champions League knockout stages in 17 consecutive seasons, Barca has now failed to make it out of the group stage for two seasons in a row. Despite exiting the Champions League, Xavi still seemingly has the backing of the board.
