Boric's shock announcement was all the more surprising as no DLE technology has reached commercial production without the use of those ponds, sparking competition to be the first. "Given those demand projections, there's definitely need for more supply from DLE," said Jordan Roberts, a Fastmarkets lithium industry analyst. A customer aiming to produce 15,000 metric tons of lithium each year, for example, could buy three stackable IBAT lithium plants. Exxon has also held talks with EnergySource Minerals about licensing DLE technology, two of the people said. Many brine deposits have varied chemical compositions, meaning it's unlikely that one DLE technology will emerge as a global leader.

Investors should focus on the long-term story in the lithium investing landscape, not the volatile price swings seen in recent months. Moves in China are driving changes in the global market for lithium as demand for electric vehicles increases, said Keybanc analyst Aleksey Yefremov. DeYoe reiterated his buy rating on Canadian producer Sigma Lithium earlier this month, calling it "the next big thing in lithium." Among the biggest names: Global X has a Lithium & Battery Tech ETF , Sprott has a Lithium Miners ETF and Horizons Global has a Lithium Producers Index ETF . "That's going to be quite a challenge, if we don't literally right now start digging up and finding sites for lithium," Langan said.
Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure ETF The Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure ETF (ELEC) by hanETF is expected to rise by 60.8% over the next year, according to the weighted average of analyst price targets of constituent stocks compiled by FactSet. The ETF, which tracks the Solactive Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Index, is traded on the London Stock Exchange, Italy's Borsa Italiana, and Germany's Xetra and Gettex exchanges. ChargePoint , which operates the largest network of electric vehicle charging stations in North America and Europe, is the fund's largest holding as of Feb. 21, according to FactSet. For example, France's Renault is the ETF's largest holding at 4.9% of total assets. The Global X Autonomous & Electric Vehicles ETF was not included in the analysis due to a lack of price target data on FactSet.
Subsidies from the U.S. government and investments from companies including General Motors in battery technology should benefit the mining companies, according to John Ciampaglia, CEO of Sprott Asset Management. "We talk to people all around the world, and there's a very consistent and global theme that's building around energy transition. Sprott's funds, including the Sprott Energy Transition Materials ETF (SETM) , are focused on mining stocks. Other funds on the market take a broader approach by bundling together mining stocks and battery manufacturers or technology companies, including Global X's Lithium and Battery Tech ETF (LIT) . The Amplify Lithium and Battery Technology ETF (BATT) goes even farther, incorporating electric vehicle stocks such as Tesla in its portfolio.
The event may have created a compelling entry point for investors who have been on the sidelines of the long-term shift to electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are becoming much more popular in the U.S. but still make up a small portion of automobiles on the roads. Cutting prices certainly caught the eye of consumers and boosted interest in Tesla vehicles, according to data from Edmunds. And, there are still issues with electric vehicles that make them impractical for large groups of consumers, said Mike Ward, an analyst at The Benchmark Company. There’s also a huge potential in firms that make batteries, key parts of electric vehicles that are also seeing surging share prices.
The Global X Lithium & Battery Tech ETF was up nearly 8% last week – its best week since March 2022, according to CNBC analysis. Lithium and EV battery producers, such as Albemarle and CATL , also did well, soaring 30% and 18% respectively. Rivian shares are seen rising by 100% over the next 12 months on average, while Tesla has 13% upside, and Lucid has 18% potential upside, according to analysts. Battery makers Freyr and Enovix Corporation stood out for having the biggest potential upside, at 108% and 285% respectively. Both are also popular among analysts, with Enovix the only company on the list to have a 100% buy rating from analysts.

Investors have a new way to bet on the commodities that are critical to a green energy future: The KraneShares Electrification Metals Strategy ETF launched on Thursday. The new fund tracks the Bloomberg Electrification Metals index and buys futures contracts on metals like aluminum, copper, zinc and lithium. The KraneShares fund is not the only ETF on the market that gives investors exposure to these industries. For example, VanEck offers a Green Metals ETF (GMET) as well as a Rare Earth/Strategic Metals (REMX) fund, which hold individual stocks in these industries. There are also some funds available that can hold futures contracts for the underlying metals, such as the United States Copper Index Fund (CPER) or the Invesco DB Base Metals Fund (DBB) .
Interest in battery stocks is starting to pick up once again, after a tough year so far. The Global X Lithium & Battery Tech ETF is down around 12% year-to-date, as growth stocks got battered in the higher-interest-rates-for-longer investing environment. And analysts expect them to rise even further, as EV production and sales rise, Rystad Energy analysts sais in a note last week. Meanwhile, 100% of all analysts covering the stocks gave these names a buy rating: Microvast, Piedmont Lithium , and Standard Lithium . And analysts say it has potential to go even further, giving it an average upside of 74%, according to FactSet.
