On an Island in Maine, a Meal Worth Traveling For
  + stars: | 2024-07-13 | by ( Kate Guadagnino | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Brooke Williams and Josh Liberson have hosted more dinner parties than they can count at their two-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. Entertaining at their home on an island in Midcoast Maine, however, is a different thing, largely because it takes at least two boats and, often, an ATV to get from the mainland to the property, which sits on a bluff surrounded by sea and woods. Williams has been going to the island since 1987, when her parents and a friend of theirs purchased 15 rugged acres spanning one of its hook-shaped peninsulas, along with the ’70s-era board-and-batten cabin that sat on top of it. (They later added a bathroom with running water and built a second rectangular structure onto the original.) Every year since, the couple — and, starting in 2007, their daughter, Ada, 16 — have spent part of their summer on the island, walking, reading, swimming and, in the evenings, building a bonfire on the pebble beach in front of their house for making s’mores.

China's surge in exports means a trade conflict is likely under either presidential candidate, Capital Economics said. The nation now makes up 15% of global manufacturing exports, which it will have to unload onto US consumers. He sees it as a consequence of the pandemic, when outsized lockdown demand ignited China's manufacturing sector, and output has jumped over 25% since 2019. Miller estimated that a trade war could start as soon as next year. During his tenure in the White House, he led a tit-for-tat trade war with Beijing, with many of its policies still in place under President Joe Biden.

Europe faces dirtier inflation fight than US

The euro zone’s export-led economy is weak, consumers and businesses are borrowing less, and higher borrowing costs mean there’s further pain to come. The contrasting fortunes of Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, and Jerome Powell, chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve, can be summed up in two numbers. The equivalent figures for the euro zone were 5.3% and 0.6%, respectively. Euro zone inflation has halved from the 10.6% peak it reached in October 2022. Europe faces a longer and dirtier fight to tame rising prices.

The firm had over 39,000 employees in the U.S. at the end of its last fiscal year on Sept. 30. KPMG, which cut about 2% of its U.S. workforce in February as per a Financial Times report, was the first of the world's four biggest accountancy firms to slash jobs in the country. The latest round of job cuts would take place through the rest of its 2023 financial year, the firm said. KPMG's fresh round of layoffs were first reported by the Financial Times. In 2022, Stacy Batten said, her “whole year was on fire.”Her husband died of cancer, and her father died after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. And she moved across the country from Seattle to Fairfield County, Conn., after selling the home that she had lived in for 26 years. In her devastation, she noticed that she felt better when she looked for the good parts of each day. So she took a large Mason jar and turned it into a “gratitude jar,” which she now keeps on her night stand. Every night, she writes down a few things that she is grateful for on a scrap of paper and drops it inside.

The San Jose, California-based digital payments company said on Tuesday it would lay off 7% of its workforce, or around 2,000 employees, a move in line with analyst expectations and the firm's previous commitment to rein in costs. PayPal has been under pressure for most of last year, as surging inflation and fears of a recession limited digital payments and e-commerce spending. Some analysts suspect the latest job cuts were under pressure from Elliot, which took a stake in the company in August. PayPal still has potential to "meaningfully improve margins over time," Horn added, indicating the company has further room to cut costs. The company cut its annual revenue growth forecast when it reported its third-quarter results in November.

The Virginia elementary teacher who police say was intentionally shot by a 6-year-old student is being hailed as a hero who saved lives by escorting her students out of the classroom while wounded. The boy's mother had legally purchased the gun, Drew said. After the shooting, Drew said, police consulted with various agencies including the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, and services for children's welfare. Police, city and school district officials had not publicly named Zwerner as the teacher who was wounded prior to Monday. “Because of the ongoing nature of the investigation, we will not be releasing any further information at this time.”The 6-year-old student was not identified because of his age.

Elon Musk forecast a US recession next year that could last until the second quarter of 2024. He advised investors to proceed cautiously, conserve cash, and avoid using borrowed money. UCLA researchers are restarting a study to give a gene therapy to kids with an ultra-rare disease. Without gene therapy, doctors treat kids with SCID using enzyme-replacement therapies, if they are ineligible for bone-marrow transplants. In an email to Insider, Kohn said he expects to be able to treat between three and six patients with his current funding. Drug companies have shown little interest in the treatments because the complexity of the treatments and tiny number of eligible patients limit potential profits. Drug companies have deprioritized or shelved gene-therapy programs to treat a range of rare diseases, including Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, MPS, Batten disease, chronic granulomatous disease, Rett syndrome, and Fabry disease.
