What started as a Midwestern surge has grown into coast-to-coast disaster. Over the last two months, rural counties and midsize cities in the Great Plains and Upper Midwest have been the main drivers of the dizzying growth in coronavirus cases in the United States. “Our people are tired,” said Maggie Hansen, the chief nursing executive at Memorial Healthcare System in South Florida. More than 1.2 million cases have been identified in the United States in the last week alone, and the country is on pace to reach 13 million known cases in the coming days. Deaths are also rising fast, with more than 2,200 announced nationwide on Tuesday, the most on a single day since early May.

The hottest pandemic purchase is a house, as more and more Americans take advantage of low mortgage rates to attain spacious backyards and more comfortable work-from-home locales. If homes keep selling at this rate, US could actually run out of new ones in just a few months. Buying a home right now isn't nearly as affordable as low mortgage rates promise, with low supply continually ratcheting home prices up. The eagerness to buy a home is also fueled by low mortgage rates — mortgage applications are up 22% compared to last year. Mortgage rates now are among the lowest ever offered — US 30-year mortgage rates have hit a dozen lows in 2020 alone.

Investors welcome Yellen as Biden's Treasury nominee

Biden’s Treasury secretary stands to be a key player in the administration’s efforts to help the country’s economy recover from the coronavirus pandemic. Among Biden’s cabinet posts, his Treasury pick has been seen as one of the more likely to have the potential to swing asset prices. The incoming Treasury chief likely will take on a crucial role in negotiating any further coronavirus economic relief package with congressional lawmakers. She took over the Fed chair post from Ben Bernanke in the wake of the financial crisis over a decade ago, after serving as vice chair of the central bank. Yellen has frequently cited growing economic inequality in the United States as a threat to America’s values and its future.

Yellen, 74, brings Biden decades of economic policy experience and is respected by Congress, international finance officials, progressives and business interests alike. The post will present a host of new challenges for Yellen, whose policymaking experience in the past 20 years has largely centered on monetary - rather than fiscal - policy. Republican President Donald Trump declined to renew her term and replaced her with current Fed Chair Jerome Powell in 2018. SEE NEW POSTSCDC upgrades warning on cruise ship travel to highest risk level possible The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Saturday raised its warning against cruise trip travel amid the pandemic, recommending “all people avoid travel on cruise ships.” The new travel notice comes 3 weeks after the CDC issued a “Conditional Sailing Order” for cruise ships traveling within U.S. waters, which lifted an eight-month no-sail order and gave cruise lines the green light to set sail again. In new guidelines, it has classified cruise ship travel as “Level 4: Very High Level of COVID-19” and it’s asking that people avoid cruise ship travel, including river cruises, worldwide. “Cruise passengers are at increased risk of person-to-person spread of infectious diseases, including COVID-19, and outbreaks of COVID-19 have been reported on cruise ships,” read the CDC’s updated travel notice for cruise ship travel. But for those still considering cruises despite the risk, the CDC suggests social distancing, hand washing and mask wearing. “Passengers who decide to go on a cruise should get tested 3-5 days after your trip AND stay home for 7 days after travel.

“Between the World & Me,” is something altogether different, both old and new, a combination of film and theater that could only work on TV. Coates may not have known these specific events would happen, but the world continues to live down to his expectations. “Between the World and Me” has tapped into something that falls in between the two genres, a work all its own, a pandemic-influenced theatrical TV performance that is neither movie nor limited series nor show. It is, as HBO terms it, a special, in every sense of the word. Special enough that HBO is working to make sure it reaches as wide an audience as possible, available to stream on HBO’s website.
