CNN —Seize The Grey bested an eight-horse field to win the 149th running of the Preakness Stakes at a muddy Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Entering the race at 9-1 odds, Seize The Grey ran ahead of Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan throughout the race. For the first time in 85 years, the Preakness Stakes was being run on a muddy track, conditions which clearly suited the three-year-old colt. Jockey Jaime Torres, competing in his first Preakness Stakes, rode Seize The Grey to a wire-to-wire victory. The racetrack known as Old Hilltop has long been a safe space for the trainer Bob Baffert. Eight times he has come to Baltimore with a horse fast enough to leave with the blanket of black-eyed Susans that are draped over the withers of the Preakness Stakes winner. The green stakes barn with white trim is a friendly bunker for Baffert. It houses all the horses competing in the second leg of the Triple Crown and is the daylight-to-dusk hub for those who care for them. There are familiar faces, like Baffert’s mentor and friend D. Wayne Lukas, 88, who wears a Stetson better than anyone this side of John Wayne.

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — After horse deaths marred this year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness, and another occurred days ahead of the world championships, safety at the Breeders’ Cup is under intense scrutiny. “We know equine fatalities is a complicated issue and that’s why we’re continuing to invest in resources,” Drew Fleming, president and CEO of Breeders' Cup Ltd., said Wednesday. Breeders’ Cup officials said his death was due to “a cardiac event.” A required necropsy will determine the official cause. With history in mind, 1/ST Racing is conducting periodic inspections and testing of all racing surfaces before the Breeders’ Cup. Dutrow saddles White Abarrio in the Classic, his first Breeders' Cup runner since he returned earlier this year from a 10-year ban for medication violations.

Since the two shared that moment eight years ago, the two trainers — both members of the Hall of Fame — have continued to reign over the sport, for better and for worse. Both Baffert and Pletcher have a gift with horses and their demanding owners. One of the horses, a colt named Forte, will face off against the Baffert-trained National Treasure and seven other thoroughbreds in the 155th running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. Horses that he trains have failed 30 drug tests over four decades — most notably Medina Spirit, who won the 2021 Kentucky Derby but failed a test for a prohibited drug and was disqualified. That colt was only the second horse in the Derby’s 149-year history whose victory was revoked because of a drug violation.

CNN —This year’s Belmont Stakes is under threat as wildfire smoke originating from Canada continues to spread across the US. Parts of the East Coast are expected to continue to suffer poor air quality until at least the weekend. How to watchThe Belmont Stakes will take place on Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. National Treasure, with jockey John Velazquez, edges out Blazing Sevens, with jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., to win the148th running of the Preakness Stakes horse race at Pimlico Race Course, Saturday, May 20, 2023, in Baltimore. National Treasure won the Preakness on Saturday in Baffert's return to the Triple Crown trail following a suspension, but it came hours after another 3-year-old colt, Havnameltdown, was put down because of a left leg injury in an undercard race. His defeat, caused by a pace much slower than the Derby, means there will not be a Triple Crown winner for a fifth consecutive year. The thrill of victories by National Treasure in the Preakness and Arabian Lion in an earlier stakes race contrasted with the agony of Havnameltdown's death. Medina Spirit was Baffert's most recent Preakness horse, finishing third.

Read moreMay 20 (Reuters) - National Treasure won the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on Saturday, giving Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert a record-breaking eighth win in the middle jewel of U.S. thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown. With John Velazquez aboard, National Treasure held off a late charge from Blazing Sevens. Kentucky Derby winner Mage finished third, meaning the chestnut colt will not have a shot at becoming U.S. thoroughbred racing's 13th Triple Crown winner. "Losing that horse today really hurt but I am happy for Johnny, he got the win," Baffert said fighting back tears, referring to the jockey. Havnameltdown stumbled and dropped Saez as he approached the stretch and sustained a "non-operable left fore fetlock injury" that led to the decision to euthanize the 3-year-old colt, 1ST Racing, which operates Pimlico Race Course, said in a statement. 1ST Racing also said Saez, who was transported to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore for further evaluation, is stable and conscious. I feel so bad for that horse, and I just hope that Luis is ok," said Baffert. Baffert has an entrant in the Preakness Stakes where the Hall of Fame trainer is seeking a record-breaking eighth win in the middle jewel of U.S. thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown. Bob Baffert, trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit, stands near the track at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, April 28, 2021. A horse of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert was euthanized at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on the undercard of Saturday's Preakness Stakes. Havnameltdown, a 4-5 favorite in the sixth race, broke down and threw jockey Luis Saez at the top of the stretch. The colt's euthanization comes in the wake of a string of equine deaths leading up to the Kentucky Derby earlier this month at Churchill Downs. Eight horses died in a little more than a week at the famed Louisville course, raising concerns about the sport's treatments of its animals.
CNN —One of the horses scheduled to run before today’s Preakness Stakes, the Bob Baffert-trained Havnameltdown, has been euthanized, after suffering a serious injury in an undercard race this afternoon, officials said. How to watchThe Preakness Stakes will take place on Saturday at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Julio Cortez/APThe controversy started after Medina Spirit, who died in December 2021, won the Kentucky Derby two years ago. After the race, Baffert revealed that the horse had tested positive for elevated levels of betamethasone. In February 2022, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission announced its decision to disqualify Medina Spirit.
The death on Saturday added to the recent toll of horse fatalities surrounding the Triple Crown races, after seven horses died at Churchill Downs in the days leading up to the Kentucky Derby earlier this month. His colt National Treasure is a 3-1 morning line choice in the Preakness and could provide the stiffest challenge to Mage, this year’s Kentucky Derby winner. Baffert was suspended after Medina Spirit failed a drug test after winning the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Last year, Baffert was serving his Kentucky suspension during the Triple Crown, so the racing commissions in Maryland and New York kept him from the Preakness and the Belmont. After the seven deaths at Churchill Downs ahead of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes officials were taking a cautious approach to pre-race examinations.

CNN —National Treasure won the 2023 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore Saturday evening. The win made Baffert the winningest trainer in Preakness Stakes history and the only trainer to have eight horses win the race. Blazing Sevens placed second, and prerace favorite and Kentucky Derby winner Mage placed third in the seven-horse field. The win means no horse will take home the coveted Triple Crown this year, achieved when a horse wins the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes in one year. National Treasure was ridden by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, who tallied his first win at the Preakness Stakes.
