PARIS — Everywhere you looked at the 2024 Paris Games, Americans dominated. On the final day of the Games, China is leading Team USA in the medal table, with 39 golds to America’s 38. Its two golds here included the 4x100-meter medley, the first time in Olympic history that anyone had beaten the U.S. Though Russia, a longtime dominant force in the sport, was excluded from these Games, China still achieved a score that far outstripped any competitors. Reuters reported that its journalists saw the spectator shouting while being removed mid-match. The banner he was carrying was green, a color used by the island’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party, as well as those who advocate for Taiwanese independence and greater autonomy. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “strongly condemns the crude and despicable means of malicious individuals ruthlessly snatching the ‘Go Taiwan’ slogan.”“This violent act is not only uneducated, but also seriously violates the civilized spirit represented by the Olympic Games. It also violates the rule of law and infringes on freedom of speech,” the ministry said in a statement.

Still, as the U.S. men’s team starts its Olympic run Sunday, it begins with a roster that has drawn countless comparisons to the Dream Team. On paper, the U.S. men’s team is arguably the best team assembled since 1992. Durant is the most prolific scorer in U.S. men’s history and could, if the Americans win gold in Paris, become the most decorated Olympic men’s basketball player. A loss in the knockout stages, when there are no more second chances, and a Dream Team redux becomes a historic nightmare.
