CNN —This spring marks both the 50th anniversary of Duke Ellington’s death, and what would have been his 125th birthday. I use their particular ways of expressing themselves and it all becomes part of my own style.”To know Duke Ellington is to know his band — although few can name its other members today. Composer and bandleader Duke Ellington hovers over fellow pianist and band member Billy Strayhorn in this 1948 photograph. “Ellington plays the piano, but his real instrument is the band,” Strayhorn said. If it involved music, Ellington gave it a shot, always with his band in tow.

For some budding musicians (and even old pros), the very sight of sheet music can elicit a fight-or-flight response, bringing up painful memories of strict piano teachers and high-pressure recitals. George Collier, a 20-year-old music transcriber, is doing his part to change that. Another clip, titled “She Practiced 40 Hours a Day for This,” captures a virtuosic Mozart piano cadenza by Mitsuko Uchida. While Collier specializes in jazz, he also showcases performances from the classical world, as well as everyday people with impressive talents. A clip titled “When Your Family Is Musically Competent” features a version of “Happy Birthday” that turns into improvised gospel-laden riffing.

White jazz artists were antiracists before the term was inventedMany of the tributes to Bennett mentioned his disdain for bigotry. Many White jazz artists were antiracists, long before the word was invented. Frank Sinatra, Bennett’s musical mentor, recorded with and relentlessly championed Black jazz artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie. He hired a Black jazz bassist, Eugene Wright, and refused to play in segregated venues. There are countless photos of a beaming Bennett hanging out with Black jazz artists.

US singer Tony Bennett (Anthony Dominick Benedetto) performs on stage during an invitation only concert at the newly opened Encore Boston Harbor Casino in Everett, Massachusetts on August 8, 2019. "No country has given the world such great music," Bennett said in a 2015 interview with Downbeat Magazine. The evening's performance resulted in the album, "Tony Bennett: MTV Unplugged," which won two Grammys, including album of the year. Bennett would win Grammys for his tributes to female vocalists ("Here's to the Ladies"), Billie Holiday ("Tony Bennett on Holiday"), and Duke Ellington ("Bennett Sings Ellington — Hot & Cool"). He also won two Emmy Awards — for "Tony Bennett Live By Request: A Valentine Special" (1996) and "Tony Bennett: An American Classic" (2007).

The Amiable, Unswerving Tony Bennett

Has there ever been a more purely likable pop figure than Tony Bennett? Throughout a career that began in the 1940s, Bennett, who died on Friday at 96, maintained one mission, amiably and unswervingly. Instead, he let listeners — and, in recent decades, much younger duet partners — come to him, generation after generation. Bennett sang vintage pop standards, the pre-rock canon sometimes called the Great American Songbook. He was always unplugged — a simple fact that cannily recharged his career when he played “MTV Unplugged” in 1994.

Mr. Sebesky’s musical interests ranged far and wide. From the beginning, Mr. Taylor and CTI were on a mission to broaden the audience for jazz by exploring intersections with pop, rock and R&B, and by making music that was more accessible to mainstream audiences than some of jazz’s more esoteric strains. It was an approach that displeased some purists, but it sold records, and Mr. Sebesky’s arranging skills were pivotal to that success. Mr. Sebesky arranged the saxophonist Paul Desmond’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (1970), an album of interpretations of Simon & Garfunkel songs. Pairing Mr. Benson with that song was an idea Mr. Sebesky had proposed to Mr. Taylor, but with a twist.
March 1 (Reuters) - Chinese video streaming company iQIYI Inc (IQ.O) said on Wednesday it would raise $600 million through the issue of convertible notes and use the funds to repay debt. U.S.-listed shares of iQIYI were down nearly 7% in premarket trading. Video-streaming app Bilibili (9626.HK), , e-commerce group Pinduoduo (PDD.O) and peers have recently piled into the convertible debt boom. Bilibili in January raised money through a discounted sale of its American depositary shares for repurchasing a convertible note. The convertible notes will mature on March 15, 2028, the company said.

Click to unmute A global city needs a global soundtrack, and in New York, you can find nearly anything you want. Over the past several months, we followed several New York musical scenes that reflect the city’s creative soul, thriving in community centers, local bars and public parks. The sight of a new generation encouraged Mr. Joseph, who sees the band as preserving traditional culture in the modern city. It becomes part of you.” New York itself is as much a player as any musician, transforming traditional tunes into something new. The people who embraced Mateo and his mother when they moved from Boston to New York in 2016 now consoled her.

An irresistible force and an immovable object: that would be Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett on Friday evening at Radio City Music Hall where they sang more than 30 standards, separately and together, before a respectful multigenerational audience that tilted older. The immovable object was Mr. Bennett, a living monument at 88, who, when he moved across the stage, proceeded slowly, cautiously and with dignity. With his customary grace and humility, Mr. Bennett embodied the patriarch of American popular song he has been for the last two decades. Around him fluttered that irresistible force, Lady Gaga, 29, an eccentric living bauble, in a succession of extravagant showgirl outfits and wigs. The chemistry between the performers in this Cheek to Cheek tour is noticeably different from the cuddly granddad and granddaughter intimacy of their videos.
