— When Gil Curren's family moved into a run-down farmhouse in Walmart's hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas, in 1971, the now-retail giant wasn't yet a decade old. Craft cocktails, hipster coffee shops and chef-driven restaurants have popped up around the city. Realtor Kristen Boozman, who works for Sotheby's, helps clients search for homes in the Bentonville area, including many buyers who are relocating from another city. Home values have shot up in the Bentonville area. A Walmart spokeswoman said the Walton Family Foundation funds and advocates for affordable housing projects in the Bentonville area.

The company's total annual compensation for the median employee was $27,642 in the most recent fiscal year, according to the company's 2024 proxy report. Those skilled trade jobs pay between $19 and $45 per hour, said Lo Stomski, the company's chief talent officer.

The majority of employees working remotely and in offices in Dallas, Atlanta and Toronto have been asked to relocate. Walmart is the nation's largest private employer with about 1.6 million employees, most of whom work at its stores across the country. Walmart has another reason to bring more employees to Bentonville: It is building a nearly 350-acre campus there. Walmart is cutting hundreds of corporate jobs and asking most remote workers to move to offices, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter. Walmart will still let staff work remotely part time, as long as they are in offices a majority of the time, the report said. Walmart employed approximately 2.1 million associates as of Jan. 31, 2024, according to regulatory filings. In February 2023, it shut three of its U.S. technology hubs and asked hundreds of workers to relocate to keep their jobs, pushing for more employees to report to work from office. New York CNN —Walmart said Tuesday it is eliminating several hundred corporate jobs and will relocate most of its remaining remote office staff to its Bentonville, Arkansas, headquarters. Walmart confirmed the move in a memo sent by Donna Morris, its chief people officer, to employees on Tuesday and obtained by CNN. The relocation will impact the majority of workers in Walmart’s Dallas, Atlanta and Toronto offices. While most relocations will be to its Bentonville headquarters, some workers will be relocated to Walmart offices in the San Francisco Bay Area or to Hoboken, New Jersey, and the New York area. “In addition, some parts of our business have made changes that will result in a reduction of several hundred campus roles,” Morris said in the memo.

He was 24-year-old store manager anxiously trying to get his workers to set up Halloween merchandise displays. Instead, the workers were gathered around the televisions in the electronics department. He didn’t fully understand what was happening until a worker tearfully laid into him, explaining that she had relatives in New York City. “I didn’t take a minute to survey the room to understand the ramifications of my words and my actions,” the former store manager, David Seymore, now a regional vice president at Walmart, told his listeners.

Walmart said it hasn't made any changes to store managers' pay structure in more than a decade. U.S. managers of the sprawling supercenters, which run about 180,000 square feet, will receive $20,000 in stock grants. Roughly 75% of its store management started out as hourly workers, Walmart said. Walmart said that the store managers' new starting annual base wage ranges will be from $90,000 to $170,000. Walmart announced in January 2023 that U.S. workers would get pay raises the following month, increasing starting wages to between $14 and $19 an hour. Starting wages had previously ranged between $12 and $18 an hour, depending on location.
