AdvertisementFor Israel, a larger war with Hezbollah would look very different from the full-scale conflict it's fighting against Hamas in Gaza. Before the 2006 Lebanon War, a monthlong conflict fought against Israel, Hezbollah maintained some 15,000 projectiles. REUTERS/Avi OhayonBut a larger Hezbollah war could overwhelm some of these systems, a scenario that has caused concern in Washington. During the 2006 war, Hezbollah fired somewhere between 100 and 200 rockets per day at Israel, according to estimates cited by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies think tank. More than two dozen soldiers and civilians have already been killed in Israel, and in Lebanon, that figure has surpassed 450.

Outside, the world waits for Israel's temporary truce with Hamas to take effect and for the release of some of the hostages held in Gaza. The Hamas attack, in which Israel says 1,200 people were killed, sparked the nearly seven-week-old war in Gaza. Israel says its mission is to eradicate Hamas and return the roughly 240 hostages held in Gaza. Under Qatari mediation, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a temporary ceasefire during which some Gaza hostages will be repatriated in exchange for the release of three times the number of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.

President Biden was welcomed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu upon arrival on a visit to Israel in October. Photo: Avi Ohayon/Israel Gpo/Zuma PressThe White House said Tuesday that Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad are using hospitals in Gaza, including Al-Shifa, for their operations but the U.S. remains opposed to Israel conducting airstrikes against the besieged hospital. John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council, told reporters traveling aboard Air Force One that Hamas and Islamic Jihad “use some hospitals in the Gaza Strip, including Al-Shifa and tunnels underneath them, to conceal and to support their military operations and to hold hostages.” Kirby’s comments represented the first time the U.S. has said that Hamas is operating out of the hospitals.

[1/3] A man assists his elderly father to get into a car so that he can be evacuated from Kiryat Shmona, near Israel's border with Lebanon, in northern Israel, October 20, 2023. Israel on Friday ordered the evacuation of more than 20,000 residents from Kiryat Shmona, one of the biggest towns on its northern border following a heavy cross-border exchange of fire in the area the day before. Survival was uppermost in the minds of Lebanese civilians from the Lebanese village of Dhayra, west of Israel's Kiryat Shmona. Daniel Hagari, spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), said the mass evacuations along Israel's northern border, allowed the army "to expand its operational freedom to act against the Hezbollah terrorist organisation." Israel is putting its swelling ranks of evacuees in guest houses and hotels if they don't have families to stay with.

During a visit to Israel, President Biden said he believed Israel wasn’t responsible for a deadly blast at a hospital compound in Gaza. Israel and militants blame each other for the explosion. Photo: Avi Ohayon/Israel GPO/Zuma PressWASHINGTON—President Biden reiterated his staunch support for Israel in the wake of attacks by Hamas militants during a visit to Tel Aviv on Wednesday. But back in the U.S., he’s faced criticism from progressives, Muslims and Arab-Americans, who say his sympathy for lost Palestinian lives and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is too little too late.
