The Vinfast VF6 all-electric vehicle is on display at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show on Nov. 18, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. Vietnamese automaker VinFast, for a short time the third-most valuable car company in the world, has a big problem: It just can't sell enough cars. Designed specifically for the Vietnamese and other Asian markets, the VF3 is priced for "mass appeal," according to VinFast. VinFast's future matters for Vietnam, both because its ambitions dovetail with the Communist Party's own goals, and because of parent company Vingroup's large role in the Vietnamese economy. "We will never let VinFast go," he told Vingroup shareholders at their annual general meeting in April, according to state media.

Massimo Pinca | ReutersDETROIT – Since spearheading a merger to create Stellantis in 2021, CEO Carlos Tavares has been on a cost-cutting mission. "We are not in the race to transition to EVs, but in a race to cut cost on EVs," Tavares said in late May during a Bernstein investor conference. The cuts are part of Stellantis' strategic plan to increase profits and double revenue to 300 billion euros by 2030. Executives on Thursday will outline developments across Stellantis' regions and businesses, including its capital and operational disciplines, according to Stellantis CFO Natalie Knight. General Motors approved yet another stock buyback — adding to our frustration that portfolio name Ford has yet to embark on a repurchase program of its own. GM on Tuesday announced a new $6 billion buyback — weeks before its November $10 billion repurchase authorization is set to be completed. "I'm very upset with Ford," Jim Cramer said during the Morning Meeting for Club members. While encouraged by Ford's successful pivot, we believe a sizeable stock buyback would be a catalyst for Ford shares as it has been for GM. While missing a host of brands, this year's edition of the Los Angeles Auto Show debuted a range of new models. But at least one automaker says it is ramping up its North American EV strategy in 2024: Honda Motor Company. Honda's EV moves come against the backdrop of EV pullbacks from other major auto manufacturers; and in some cases, shelved EV plans altogether. GM itself is playing a key role in the first mass-market EV Honda is introducing, the Prologue. Costco Auto has facilitated more than 500,000 vehicle sales annually over the past five years on average, according to Jay Maxwell, Costco Auto Program general manager responsible for strategic partnerships. GM declined to disclose how many Costco customers have purchased GM vehicles through the program. Ford EV and hybrid sales surge 65% in May

DETROIT – Ford Motor's U.S. new vehicle sales rose 11.2% last month compared with May of last year, boosted by strong sales growth for all-electric and hybrid models. The Detroit automaker on Tuesday reported roughly 65% increases in sales of both hybrid and all-electric vehicles. The boost to EV sales is a conundrum for investors. The spike in hybrid sales is part of Ford's plan to double down on the technology. Ford reported total year-to-date U.S. sales through May of 877,685 units, up 5.6% compared with the same time period in 2023.

Ford had another month of strong sales, but a wider appeal on Wall Street for the stock depends on cutting the automaker's massive EV division losses. A Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) during the 2023 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) in New York, on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. NEW YORK – Jeep plans to grow U.S. sales of its plug-in hybrid electric vehicles by as much as 50% this year as it leans into the technology as a bridge between its traditional gas-guzzling SUVs and all-electric vehicles amid a slower-than-expected sales pace of EVs. The Stellantis brand expects to sell 160,000 to 170,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, or PHEVs, in the U.S. this year, an increase of 40% to 50% from last year, Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa told CNBC. "One of the pillars of growth for the market is going to be freedom of choice." PHEV sales at the level Jeep is expecting this year would top Stellantis' total 2023 U.S. sales of the vehicles, at roughly 143,000 units.

BEIJING — Chinese electric car company Xpeng saw its shares soar after reporting an improvement in profit margin and an upbeat outlook for second-quarter deliveries. The company's Hong Kong-listed shares rose more than 13% in morning trade Wednesday. Xpeng reported that vehicle margin rose 5.5% in the first three months of the year, from a negative 2.5% in the prior quarter. Vehicle margin is a measure of profitability — the higher the margin, the greater the profit the company is making on its car sales. The company forecast deliveries of 29,000 to 32,000 cars in the second quarter, a year-on-year increase of at least 25%.

Lower pricing due to softening demand helped April electric vehicle sales at Ford more than double, even as the automaker was shifting resources away from the money-losing unit. Beijing Reuters —Huawei Technologies’s net profit leapt 564% to 19.65 billion yuan ($2.71 billion) in the first quarter, a regulatory filing by its parent company showed on Tuesday, as it continues to recover from US sanctions. Huawei’s revenue for the quarter to the end of March rose 37% to 178.5 billion yuan, the filing to China’s National Interbank Funding Center showed. It did not break down how business units, such as consumer and smart car components, performed. Apple’s share in the world’s biggest smartphone market fell to 15.7% in the first quarter from 19.7% a year earlier. It has become a force in smart car technology too, with its driver assistance system touted by at least seven Chinese automakers at the Beijing auto show.

BEIJING — Local Chinese authorities have removed restrictions on Tesla cars after the company's China-made vehicles passed the country's data security requirements, the automaker said Sunday. Although Tesla's electric cars are some of the most popular vehicles in China, they have reportedly been banned from some government-related properties due to concerns about what data the U.S.-based automaker can collect. Tesla's press release did not specify which local authorities had removed restrictions on the cars. The Biden administration earlier this year announced a probe into whether imported cars from China pose national security risks due to their ability to potentially collect data about the U.S. and send it back to China.
