It disappeared from her sight for a few minutes, and she started walking home before spotting the helicopter flying back. She said the helicopter had passed over trees and another taller building before hitting the roof of the hotel. In a statement to CNN, DoubleTree by Hilton Cairns said all of its guests – 421 adults and 50 children, plus two staff – were safely evacuated. The bureau asked witnesses with any photos or videos of the helicopter to contact authorities through its website.

Brisbane, Australia CNN —A helicopter crashed onto the roof of a seaside hotel in Cairns, Australia, in the early hours of Monday, killing the pilot, authorities said, as video showed flames and smoke billowing into the night sky. As she pulled out her phone to film it, the helicopter veered and headed straight towards the nearby well-lit buildings. Witness Veronica Knight heard two explosions when the helicopter hit the hotel – the first on impact followed by a smaller explosion a short time later. Knight said the helicopter had passed over trees and another taller building before hitting the roof of the seven-story hotel.

CNN —A pilot and passenger emerged unscathed from a light plane that made a dramatic crash landing in Australia after flying perilously close to houses in suburban Sydney. “It was gliding, there was no power,” pilot Jake Swanepoel told Nine News. Ground staff dashed to assist them, but Swanepoel and his partner Karin climbed out of the aircraft unscathed. “We didn’t think we were going to make this landing strip here,” Karin told Nine News. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau told CNN that it is gathering further information about the landing before deciding whether to launch an investigation.

Mitchell said the main rotor blade of the aircraft made contact with the front cockpit of the descending helicopter.
