☆ 6,000-year-old symbols linked to the world’s oldest writing system

CNN —Researchers have uncovered links between the precursor to the world’s oldest writing system and the mysterious, intricate designs left behind by engraved cylindrical seals that were rolled across clay tablets about 6,000 years ago. Scholars consider cuneiform the first writing system, and humans used its wedge-shaped characters to inscribe ancient languages such as Sumerian on clay tablets beginning around 3400 BC. The writing system is thought to have originated from Mesopotamia, the region where the world’s earliest known civilization developed that’s now modern-day Iraq. “This gap in the origin story — where do the nonnumerical proto-cuneiform signs come from — was left unresolved,” Johnson said. Correlating seal motifs (left) with proto-cuneiform pictographs could help researchers decipher hundreds of the symbols whose meaning is still unknown.

I'm a Yale student, and I just toured Oxford for the first time while studying abroad. I loved the old-school feel on campus and can see myself being a grad student at Oxford one day. When I first toured Yale, it felt like I encountered the sublime for the first time. However, over the summer, while studying abroad in London, I had the opportunity to spend a day wandering around the streets of Oxford and Oxford University. The city leans toward this impression; many shops play into the medieval university feel, which I loved.

Rewatching my fall fave, "Gilmore Girls," as a parent feels less nostalgic and more painful. AdvertisementI found "Gilmore Girls" my first year of high school, and I'd never felt more seen. "Gilmore Girls" felt fun and fresh. When "Gilmore Girls" initially ran, I knew nothing about relationships, especially healthy ones. A higher-than-expected unemployment rate could prompt the Fed to accelerate the easing cycle to achieve a soft landing. The unemployment rate in September is expected to come in at 4.2%, according to data of a Reuters poll on LSEG, unchanged from the August figure.
