Trump won the presidency in 2016 by stunning Democrat Hillary Clinton to win all three states by a combined margin of about 80,000 votes. But, as in other states, Democrats have been concerned about the risk of depressed turnout and some gains for Trump among Black voters in Philadelphia. Eight years later, the two states split again, when Roosevelt comfortably won Pennsylvania and Michigan narrowly went to Republican Wendell Willkie. This trio of states has arguably become the most consistent tipping point in American politics. In the nine elections since 1920 when they split their vote, the candidate who carried two of these three states won seven times.

Abortion rights opponents had argued in a pair of lawsuits that the amendment to expand abortion rights violated a state rule that says a ballot proposal must only address one subject. Matt Heffron, a senior counsel for a firm that argued against allowing the abortion rights initiative to stay on the ballot, slammed the high court's ruling. Two more states with near-total abortion bans are poised to have citizen-sponsored measures on the ballot this year that would allow voters to reverse those bans by establishing a right to abortion in their state constitutions. On Friday, a coalition of abortion rights groups in Missouri turned in 380,159 signatures to put the amendment on the ballot, nearly double the 172,000 signatures required by law. The Missouri organizers’ announcement followed a petition drive in South Dakota that announced on Wednesday that it, too, had turned in many more signatures than required for a ballot amendment there. As Democrats confront a presidential race against a resurgent and resilient Donald J. New York CNN —99 Cents Only Stores — a discount chain in California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada — is winding down its business operations, according to a press release from the company on Thursday. “This was an extremely difficult decision and is not the outcome we expected or hoped to achieve,” said Mike Simoncic, interim chief executive officer of 99 Cents, in the release. It will also work with the firm to get rid of fixtures, furnishings and equipment at its 371 stores. Simoncic will step down from his role, the company said, and Chris Wells will serve as chief restructuring officer. Bloomberg reported last week that 99 Cents was considering a bankruptcy filing.
