CNN —Archaeologists in France have uncovered nine “astonishing” graves containing the skeletons of 28 horses that were buried about 2,000 years ago, though their precise cause of death remains a mystery. All these horses were buried at the same time shortly after their deaths, archaeologists said after observing the position of the skeletons and the connections between the bones. That leaves, archaeologists said, the possibilities that these horses were either killed in battle or as part of a ritual sacrifice. The horses may have been killed in battle or sacrificed. If these horses were indeed buried as part of a ritual rather than killed in battle, the sheer number shows the “importance and extent of the sacrifice,” the statement added.

Hong Kong CNN —A golden face with patinaed turquoise eyes stares out of the darkness. Currently on display at the Hong Kong Palace Museum, they may appear Mayan or Aztec to the untrained eye, but these over-3,000-year-old sculptures weren’t unearthed anywhere near Mesoamerica’s ancient civilizations. Archaeologists from the Sanxingdui Museum say the city was established some 4,800 to 2,800 years ago, until it was abandoned around 800 BC for unknown reasons. Blood, milk, and muscle from cattle, goats, or sheep were all preserved in the pots. The pots contained blood, muscle, and milk proteins, representing several different types of animals. The milk proteins show the Maykop people were also getting their dairy from these animals. One cauldron had both blood and milk proteins. Lucy's fossil includes 40% of her skeleton, one of the most complete Australopith fossils found to date. Edwin Remsberg/Alamy Stock PhotoAnalysis of Lucy’s fossil over the past 20 years has suggested that she and others of her species walked upright. Then, she used scans of Lucy’s fossil to determine how her joints were articulated and moved in life. Muscle modeling of Lucy, dubbed "AL 288-1," is compared side by side with human muscle maps. “Lucy likely walked and moved in a way that we do not see in any living species today,” Wiseman said.

ROME, May 16 (Reuters) - Two skeletons have been found in the ruins of Pompeii, the ancient Roman city wiped out by an eruption of volcano Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago, the Italian Culture Ministry said on Tuesday. Pompeii Archaeological Park Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel said they were killed not by volcanic ash but by collapsing buildings, noting that wall fragments were found between their fractured bones. "Modern excavation techniques help us to better understand the inferno that completely destroyed the city of Pompeii over two days, killing many inhabitants", the German archaeologist said. REUTERS/Ciro De Luca/File PhotoThe Culture Ministry said "at least 15-20% of the population" was killed. Over the past two and a half centuries, archaeologists have recovered the remains of more than 1,300 victims.

Archaeologists have found bent nails, lime, and brick near a Roman burial site. These may have been charms to stop the restless dead from interfering with the living, they said. There are signs in burial site that the deceased person was respected at the time of their death. iStock / Getty Images PlusThe nails suggest ancient Romans feared the restless dead and would use various occult practices to protect themselves, archaeologists said in the study. But they were dead nails, and the way they were distributed around the perimeter of the tomb suggests that the placement was purposeful," he said.
